the issue is that apple has interest in making it encrypted to meet customer expectations. imessages are so encrypted apple can't read them at all in transit. goog would hate this, and needs them to be sent in plaintext so they can advertise against them. this is why there will never be a cross compatible standard.
next best thing tho. unlike whats app or similar, imessage is optional and transparent to the user. if i send a text to an iphone user, it goes through imessage, and if i send it to a droid person, it goes sms.
These are the kind of debates that Europeans have about jail. In us we chuckle at this and go back to debating whether we should do anything to prevent prisoners getting raped in the shower (end result: we turn a blind eye).
in CA the cops will periodically raid a club and check the ID of every stripper there. if a club has an underage stripper, then they get in trouble big time. keeps the clubs in check. same as for bars, it works just fine without the govt snooping and licensing. This licensing scheme is just a form of intimidation.

The govt obviously wants a spy platform with more flexibility and resolution than a spy satellite without the hassle of flying planes, but they are too cheap to do it themselves and so instead want to"crowdsource it" because they read that term online once. This way it can spy on us better.
