I took a week off to purchase a house about 6-7 months prior and that was all. I also used vacation time for my friend's funeral.
There are a lot of stories just from this particular gentleman so this was the final straw.
My job just previous was Manager of Operations for a company purchased by IBM. I managed a team of 7 folks and we kicked ass as a group. I don't consider myself a bad employee and have never been terminated for any reason and get pretty good reviews.
Sometimes you just get stuck with a prick and the best thing to do is hit the eject button and work for someone who respects you and appreciates your hard work.
I have a ton of these stories after being in the industry for 21 years but I'll share a recent one from a few years ago.
I left a large organization after my retention ran out and joined a Startup based out of southern New Hampshire. About 8-9 months into my job my best friend was hit by a car and killed. When I say my best friend, I'm talking about a guy that came over my house 3-4 days a week after work to hang out. I loved this guy as much as family.
I informed my boss that I needed to take a few days off to help get his "matters" in order and help plan the funeral. He gave me the time off. After two days I realized I was going to need some more time to help finalize everything and asked for a couple more days off. He never responded to my email or phone call. I took the time off. When I returned to work after 4-5 business days off. His comment to me was: "OH! you finally decided to show up"
I set up a meeting with the CEO and quit on the spot and informed that I had no job lined up and would continue until I found one, or I could walk right then. They kept me on for about 3 weeks while I found a new job.
What's wrong with attacking the messenger? Are we supposed to believe every moron that comes along just because the moron is a "messenger"? If a conspiracy theorist comes along and claims the moon landing was a hoax then you attack both the message and messenger.
So they're a moron for linking a website and mentioning a very popular theory? Not sure how this gets voted insightful. The idea that powerful people, especially this particular pair, might be wrapped up in murders is certainly not moronic. You sir are a cunt.
So the whole tech industry business model is flawed ? Anybody in the SV sticking to 40h/week is pretty likely to get laid off, if not fired, pretty quick.
That's nice and all except that without some sort of law or regulation, stating that a company cannot work you over 40 hours without additional compensation, is pointless. Every single company I've worked for has been happy to have me working 60+ hours a week and I doubt I'm in the minority.
I was getting banged for $9.99/mo until I tracked down my son had opted-in to the free music trial and never canceled. Google cleared it up for me in a few minutes and refunded the last bunch of charges. No biggie in the long run and my kids got a fresh talk about app downloads.
All this will do is add a piece of technology that is more prone to breakage than the gun itself. One purpose of the weapon is to defend yourself, almost always, quickly. The last damned thing I want on my gun is another locking mechanism that could fail when I need it most.
...that I wrote in PHP. We have over 140 servers and 70+ workstations. Never mind the switches, mobile phones, monitors, demo machines and loaner equipment. Keeping track of all that in a spreadsheet was getting a little tedious. It worked but it wasn't the best solution. I wrote something up in an afternoon using php and apache that allows us to add/delete/edit equipment if you log in using apache. If you don't log in you get a ready only view of everything sorted by asset tag number.
A friend of mine recently asked me the same question you asked here...and I gave him my code. I guess it is working nicely for them. Not much of a solution for you I know but I could give you the code if you like...
My friend was a painter almost his entire life. Years ago he got a degree and was a teacher. The only computer experience he had was playing the occasional video game. When he was in his late 30s he left painting to work desktop support. After a couple years doing that I got him a job as a Junior Sysadmin with my company and took him under my wing. Now he's in his early 40s and a solid mid-level sysadmin (4 years later). I don't see any effect on his career due to his age. Most hiring managers are probably just happy to have someone who knows how to fix the servers.
That's not greedy. That is doing what is best for you and your career. Why stay at the sinking ship taking less pay and doing even more work when you can move to another company that isn't as affected by the downturn and be paid a reasonable wage? Just makes sense. Good luck on your search.
For the last 8 years I've named all my systems after demons, except in a few instances. I used to work with a born again christian who didn't like the naming scheme very much and used to counter with religious names (he was a junior sysad with responsibility for a handful of our 200+ systems). Most have CNAME records that are more benign but even when users find out the real names they don't tend to care.
I've been in IT for 12 years now and I certainly would not recommend it to either of my boys. I'll suggest that they learn how to use computers effectively and maybe go as far as learn some languages if it makes sense for their career choice.
Sure there is good money and benefits and job security but I don't think it is very rewarding, especially early on in your career. My eldest wants to be an architect and I'm going to support him in that goal. If he ever were to ask me what I think he should do with his life I'd certainly tell him that is something he has to figure out for himself. But if pressed I wouldn't suggest IT.
Being a teacher would suggest that you know something the students do not know, namely these applications, so I assume you know either the older commercial apps or the open source apps in question here. If that is the case, teach them what you know. If you don't know either sets of apps....how can you be an effective teacher?
It really depends on your tastes in music. If you are into more mainstream RIAA labeled bands then iTunes is probably the best way to go. I like eMusic because it has more independent artists like Okkervil River, Ladyhawk and Spoon. I get the music at about 1/3 of the price of iTunes and it only costs me about $10/mo.
Because of their arrogance the music industry wil now have 0 revenue where before it could get something.
I wish that were true. Sadly not enough people are motivated enough to make anything near that reality possible. Plus the RIAA has their hooks in many different industries now (blank media for one). How many people do you know personally that actually say "I'm making an effort to no longer support the RIAA"? I don't know any, sadly. I think I'm the only person I know that tries to spend my money on music not controlled by them and even that is impossible to do all the time.
While I think the steps they are taking is having an effect on the public, I don't see it killing their profits.
Hopefully that taught you to negotiate your title before accepting positions. I've been lucky with my title in the last 10 years and any problems were corrected. I don't accept positions now unless the title is in the offer letter and is correct.
I've already seen a new technique to defeat the OCR software. Yesterday I got my first email with a spam message that contained a single image for each letter of the message. Of course FuzzyOCR didn't hit on this. Not sure how we'll get around that one.

This was stopping most of our spam...however we were still getting a lot of spam that contained images with the spammy message. So about 2 weeks ago I implemented the FuzzyOcr plugin on all of our border systems. I've received a single image spam since I launched it. It works great. I also tweak the rule scores based upon our situation and the type of spam that we get and I monitor the effectiveness of those changes on a fairly regular basis.
My co-workers really hate me...I listen to either death metal or Chronix Radio. I've had people close my office door and/or turn my music down while I was away at the bathroom. But since I can't stand most of them...I really don't care.
It sure beats listening to the other members of my department talk about stupid shit while I'm trying to code or write documentation. Plus I think lighting those stinky candles and the smell of one of my co-workers who doesn't bathe is far more egregious than my music.
I have a few "sets" of passwords that I use. Basically it goes like this:
1) Online banking - Very complex ( as complex as my banking site will allow that is ) / Important work related passwords 2) Unimportant work related passwords (Such as the log in to view the cacti graphs for example) / Public websites that require a password and I care a little bit about 3) Public websites I could give a rats ass about having broken into. Myspace would be listed here. So would my slashdot account.
So my point is just because people use crappy passwords for myspace doesn't nesasarily mean they don't have a clue......but being caught by phishers does.;)

I hear he re-retired about a year after I left.

They did this on my 2012 S60. Although I don't think the spare tire was even an option. It just comes with a nice package of Fix-a-Flat.
Look around.

+1 if I had it.

Quake 3 launched with a Linux version. I don't think it sold very well.

Take a stand that breaks the law so you can go to prison. I was only arguing that you won't have a shit eating grin. Trust me, I've been there.
