I am inclined to agree with you.

Reminds me of that advertisement for the drug Optivo. "A chance to live longer". Then you read the fine print. 2-3 months longer. Let's say 6 months to be generous. Sorry, but to me that's not worth it. I want a cure/remission. Why all the research to postpone the inevitable?

That's also why I believe advanced directives should include a clause that if there is a clear, terminal illness at play (no cure, no hope of cure, x months to live) give me that morphine IV, leave me alone in the room, and tell me what dial not to touch ... :) No way I'm going to burden my family with this shit.

  5. Me too! (says an AOL'er) :)

That's why I've always maintained that the government should be using mainframes. Two factor auth (similar to rsa secureid). Encrypted connections, etc. I don't care that you can't figure out the 3270 screens. You don't need to watch cat videos when you're doing serious government business. If you insist, mainframes can use the web nowadays to interface those applications to a browser but I'd prefer not unless you're working with document or data that just doesn't lend itself to green screen. ... but it still needs to be encrypted, two factor auth etc. Why they would even consider using the cloud, Windows or general purpose workstations (PC's) for this totally just makes me facepalm.

This power line shit has been tried over and over but due to the fact power lines are big antennas not only will they splatter all over the radio bands, they also must ACCEPT any interference that they "hear".

Guess it's time for me to set up some beacons that randomly transmit full legal power for identification purposes ....

  13. Someone had said "They welcome saving money by having to sign up for "content packages""

    This was my reply:

    Screw content packages.

I want a Dumb. Pipe. ... and I do not want to pay extra for it, because I don't have to at present.

I do tech for a living. If I want to have something on my home network that opens port 6543 on my firewall that if you TCP connect to it it spits out the word "BULLSHIT" 10 times and then disconnects, I want to be able to do that. No one should be able to tell me otherwise. I shouldn't have to subscribe to some "Enthusiast Plan" to do this.

If I want to do VoIP ....

DECNet over IP via Multinet (think OpenVMS)?

Let's play with the VM/370 Sixpack on Hercules and run RSCS over IP ... Sure!

I could go on. My point is - if I'm paying for a connection I want to do whatever I want with it, whenever I desire to do so.

Apologies if this sounds a bit rant-y ... but unless I'm going to save SERIOUS money, I want no part of content packages. My Internet portion of my cable bill is now what, $50/mo? Unless you're dropping that to $10 or $20 a month, I'm not interested in your "packages". Leave my Internet alone, thanks.

  24. Damn I wish I hadn't burnt my last mod point. AC or not I would have modded you up to the moon.

I was having this discussion with an old boss (that I'm obviously on good terms with) just a few days ago - it almost seems you are "better off" (in quotes) if you don't save like mad, because if you don't have money saved, there's no money to spend on that expensive medical condition, and you'll either get help from the government or just die. I don't know which is worse - dying or having your life savings wiped out, losing your house, etc (and witnessing that) because of some expensive medical condition, and then of course dying anyway.

The US needs to wake up and straighten out this us vs. them shit. I would gladly pay x% in higher taxes to know that everyone no matter their ability to pay would at least be able to live a comfortable life. That's also a reason assisted suicide should be legal. No way I'm going to let myself linger because of a terminal illness (100% certainty of death within X number of years) of the kind that takes years or decades to kill me. Screw that.
