    64 bit software on PC's is significantly faster, not because of the number 64, but because of the elimination of several bottlenecks in the 32bit hardware that occurred at the same time by coincidence. 64bit software takes advantage of the more robust hardware.

    I agree with you to some extent, but the flaw in your argument was that MS went on to annihilate OS/2.

    Intel owns the performance crown now for the majority of the market without many of AMD's tricks ... implementing the rest of them won't give AMD much breathing room as the year passes.

    I am an AMD fan, but they need to get their collective ass in gear now.

    You can. See search for dvd decrypter ... if you feel like removing all the crap from the disk, dvd shrink it is.

    It is configurable:
     
    /apps/metacity/general/raise_on_click

    Many actions (e.g. clicking in the client area, moving or resizing the window) normally raise the window as a side-effect. Set this option to false to decouple raising from other user actions. Even when this option is false, windows can still be raised by an alt-left-click anywhere on the window, a normal click on the window decorations, or by special messages, such as activation requests from pagers. This option is currently disabled in click-to-focus mode.

    I have mine set to false and it doesnt raise. This setting has been around for a while, not sure when it appeared though.

    You forgot to mention searching google then the search results looking for the program. Then finding the download link (sometimes obfuscated), downloading to your disk, waiting, then clicking it. Vista will finally ask you for a password ( a good thing ).

    Add all that up and "sudo apt-get install beagle" or browsing synaptic doesnt seem so hard, does it?

    Actually, it is possible for similar spec'd machines to differ in speed ... remember the PC magazine benchmarks pitting the Gateway vs. Dell vs. Compaq, etc showdowns?

    There are lots of variables such as included video card, disks, installed software, driver versions, bios tuning, etc. Maybe the Mac does some of these better because of the greater R&D done at Apple ... maybe not.

    Let them do the benchmarks to decide.

    They're not much different. Problem is crotchety people who refuse to learn anything new.

    For instance, I have a girlfriend that demanded I leave IE on her computer because she couldn't understand how to use Firefox. Christ, what does it take? 30 minutes tops to find your way around a new browser?

    I tend to think both blue-ray and hddvd will be a dud for several years at least. People are happy with dvd and the format confusion will scare off a lot of people.

    When they get cheaper they will probably be good for computer backup if anything.

    Technically it is mostly finished, but lots of work still needs to be done to improve ease of use. Hence, that's where the excitement is.

    Usually you can turn off the display scaling in the bios.

    Also, you may get lucky... My widescreen laptop with intel 852/855 graphics was underutilized until some geek on the internet released some code to patch the video bios. I run a command before X to add 1280x768 to the list. Messy, but it works.

    I wish the code would make it into the official driver.
