  1. Not surprising on 50% of HDTV Owners Don't Use HD · · Score: 1

Thanks to the propellerheads who design this shit these days. Even fucking "consumer" electronics are too difficult to use.

Can someone tell me why we need several HD resolutions? No, I don't care about the reason, we don't. Aspect ratios? Six fucking different kinds of cables to connect the shit? US vs European standards?

Now, if I was the king of the world, there would be *one* digital AV standard. Perhaps 1600x900, 30 fps (or more) progressive scan only, 60hz LCD, 90 hz CRT, all connected by firewire from begining to end, and TV would autoselect aspect ratio depending on content without user intervention. Simple and idiot proof.

It is because of these reasons and also the bullshit DRM on new products that has led me to boycot any new technology purchases besides my computer. My computer is the only thing I can still trust to work, although people are working on undermining even that too. They are all designed by *idiots*.

I'd love to start cracking some skulls, because I used to love all this shit. But, every year I think more about reverting back to just curling up with a good book from the library in the evenings and never spending another cent on it.

Yeah, it's really bad in Los Angeles. Lotsa chlorine.

But the funny thing about chlorine ... it is a gas. If you fill up a pitcher and let it sit for 30 mins or more the chlorine will dissipate.

The advantage is you get the best of both worlds, safe water, without the ingestion of chlorine. Also, keeping a pitcher in the fridge is an easy way to have cold water on hand.

    Ok, I'll reply.

Python is fast enough for most applications, and it has improved significantly in the latest releases, 2.3 and 2.4. It's not much slower than perl and is a much nicer language, IMHO. I've used it on countless projects without problem or performance issues.

If performance is your primary concern, you wouldn't be using python, and you wouldn't be using CGI obviously so the question is not so relevant, I think.

As for emerge, it's slow response comes from the non optimized way it scans a database of many thousands of flat files of dependencies, etc. As far as I know it does it every time you run the command, there may be no caching or indexing at all.

Obviously, a very slow but useable implementation of one program is not python's fault. The program and even the problem itself could be optimized in any number of ways, and there is talk in the gentoo dev camp on how to do that. Whether there is the will to do it is another question. They may have to redesign the complete packaging system and portage to do it.

There is a cool chapter in the book, Dive into Python (free online, just google), which has a chapter or two on HTML processing. It may be worth a look.

You can convert to html first and then run a script to parse the html with the sgmlparser module. Then just ignore all the msword crappola when writing the output files.

Dunno, maybe that is an option.

Probably many things are native on intel, but when you hit something that needs to be emulated it slows down considerably.

    - the amount of memory taken by the emulator
    - OSX intel probably isn't as well optimized.
    - OSX in general isn't well optimized.

Ok, no big deal. You make it sound like it is so much trouble to copy files. So much trouble in fact, that it is impossible.

Digital photos taken today won't be around 60 years from now...sorry, but that's the fact. You would constantly have to keep upgrading and transfering your shots to the latest storage medium just to keep up. Can anyone honestly say that you'll be able to read a CD 60 years from now to get the pictures off? Maybe if you find an old computer in an antique shop...maybe.

Once every 10 years is constantly? The point I was making was that many photos will be around for a long time. It is quite possible, even if it takes a bit of effort.

Many of us don't keep our primary data on removable media anyway, and so upgrading formats is a non-issue, as the media is upgraded automatically. No additional effort is needed than would otherwise be exerted.

Also, I believe as the industry matures, we will see more longevity in storage formats. The future of digital photography is not nearly so dim as you describe.
