  1. why all the CYA's? on Should You Break TOS Because Work Asks You? · · Score: 1

(note: IANAL, and the following comment only goes if such things are illegal. if not; just refuse because violating TOS is asking to be kicked out, which will reflect back on your customer service. anyhew:)

Why are most people focused on the CYA part, and not even remotely thinking of simply refusing to do it?

Note that I am not against covering your own behind here, you can do that even when you refuse, in case things escalate.

But the fact of the matter is that in the end, you are willfully taking part in illegal ventures, and if you can't be prosecuted for that just because your boss told you to, the law needs to be fixed. If he can fire you for refusing such an assignment, the law needs to be fixed too.

actually, 0.x1, where x is an infinite number of zeroes, is exactly the same as 0.

OTOH, people will never play an infinite number of poker hands, and within hands, especially in tournaments (less so in cash games), randomness has a tendency to get pretty high at times, thereby bringing the average back up again.

OTOH, chess does not exactly have zero randomness. There are times when different moves could have the same 'value' and the one the player chooses could be well interpreted as random. Choosing an opening would be a good example; you shouldn't open with every possible move, but you shouldn't alway pick the same one either.

Which is actually why I like the notion of del Toro directing it. He has enough style of his own to make the chance big enough that he will not simply copy the Lord of the Rings.

If I understood correctly, both the Hobbit movie and its sequel will be based on the book; they've split up the story in two parts. My guess would be one part 'There', and one 'and back again' ;)

By the way, i've kind of always liked the Hobbit better as a book than the LOTR trilogy.

There are a lot of technologies and even some programming languages that would completely break the Internet as we know it should they be completely gone one of a sudden. Java is most certainly not one of them.

wouldn't it be possible to make a plugin that uses this information to provide tips or maybe on-the-fly configurations etc to maximize your effectiveness in pvp? I can't see a problem with this site if it isn't possible, but if it can be automated it could very well throw the game balance completely to the side that uses something like that.

I know 'the other side can use it too' (if it's public) but even if that wasn't a lame excuse, it could very well change the style of playing pvp completely (for better or for worse, but still).

Why do they refuse to publish the exact specs? Their competitors can (and will) reverse-engineer them. Any federal guideline should (and could) be enforced in the hardware itself.

Somewhere in recent history (probably somewhere right before the "unix wars") something went wrong; it was somehow seen to be a good thing not to disclose how your stuff is actually built, even though you get no advantage from that. Even though you get a disadvantage from that.

My guess would be that lawyers are telling them it's better not to release specs. Unfortunately the people who care are too few to actually make enough of a difference to tell them otherwise.
