if border manager is so great then explain to me why I'm currently looking at devoting my time to decompiling the client and figuring out a way around it. Yes I know it shoulnd't need the client, but our admins have disabled it (I'm the defacto admin of the macs here, and get on well with the techs, but they still refuse my requests), and even when it was enabled it wan't working properly. That's why I have an ancient laptop running 95 & junkbuster just sitting ther all day proxying requests for the macs...

What I've heard (I have some deep contacts with apple & digidesign) is that with 10.5 (I heard an early Q4 2002 release date that's maybe making me think 10.2) most of the pro audio apps will start to move over. AFAIK the main thing against OS X is that these apps have to get used to losing the ability to hog the CPU.
If you actually read the product info you can (for the 'logic unit') either use a: * ASCII Terminal (Just connect to a *nix box) * PC (Just install linux) * NC (Can anyone say X)
Now, yes this IS cool, but it's equivilent to someone isntalling linux on a weird looking PC with some cool peripherals.
As a volunteer to computerbank victoria, naturally I have to add my 2c.
At CBV we have a very intresting custom debian install, fully prompted and able to be done by (comparativly) non-technical people. We also have all sorts of old and cool hardware to play with:-).
But it does seem like Microsoft, I feel that it would be more likely that Microsoft asked Dell, and Dell saw that they wern't making much money, asked Microsoft to give them the amount they were making on linux and gave up on linux.
Telstra own ALL public exchanges.
And as for ADSL prices, my Father was the product manager at the time of that price setting. He ARGUED against that price to the wholesale manager who was stubborn. Blame that guy (Who I'll not name) for the high price of ADSL.
The ACCC recently forced Telstra to lower its price and so hopefully consumer prices would lower soon.
I'm only 17, yet I PAY for my own broadband. In a deal with my parents, they pay for access (US$45 / month) and I pay for ALL bandwidth, I pay US7c/MB for bandwidth. People on Telstra are lucky, they're getting a GOOD DEAL, people on Optus even more so. The reason I pay so much is because I chose to use a business ISP so that I wouldn't get and port blocking (which Optus has) and a garenteed Permanent IP.
Whirlpool is mostly a collection of whining IDIOTS, who don't understand the real costs of running a network (I'm a part-time network admin for several networks includeing Computerbank Victoria (Pro Linux charity www.computerbank.org.au)).
The only problem with broadband in Australia is that the per MB cost is too high, if you use BigPond Direct (one of the main backbone ISP's) the charge is US11c/MB and the cheapest cost that I've seen is with a contract that has cost almost US$50,000 a year for MANY gigs of data at US4.5c/MB.
On my network it's the server that's the limiting factor. It only has a 200Mhz processor with 64MB and a dodgy ethernet card talking to old & slow hard drives. My laptop can easily push 50Mbit through it's Intel (micro)PCI card. Even talking to that server I get over 25mbit. So you're using a very F'd laptop. My own is quite dodgy. However I've never used 802.11(a/b) so I can't say.

2. How about getting Dick Smith to sponser & MC it???

I support Elz, but do you have ANY idea of how F***KED the Australian registry are? They are hell to deal with, and unforunatly Elz just makes it worse, if we had a competent resitrar then Elz's rules would be great. However the Australian government has chosen F**ked resistry over reasnoble rules and forcebly removed Elz's control over the.au
Microsoft, and many other companies *cough*APPLE*cough* DON'T just convert the price, they whack it up by 20-90%, sometimes over 100% has been seen. And NO the GST does not come into it, as almost every person that would buy this would be a business and then its a non-issue.
Anyone know international pricing?
I have several friends who will be required to pay for it, and knowing big companies they will charge more than twice the US cost.
I'm writing this from my school laptop now (Melbourne Australia), but I'm only one of probably 20 or so people out of the 400 people in years 11 & 12 that use their laptops frequently. Most of them will only use them when the are forced to
I'm writing this comment on my NEC VersaLite FX, it's really bad, I've had three hard drive failures, a bad screen, bad keyboard, had the (Internal!!!) network card fall out several times and once had to be replaced. And the powersupply has had it's connector replaced more times than I care to count.
And that's in only ONE YEAR.

OK, where can I buy one of these (without the listning devices) and how much would it cost?
