I live in BFE, MS and like the poster have no choice for broadband. Today, I had a couple guys come out and install a WildBlue satellite, they just finished about a half hour ago. It seems pretty nice, I get about 1.5Mbps downstream and 256Kbps upstream says some random bandwidth tester. The latency is pretty painful, I got ~650ms pinging google. The 'Pro' version of this provider is 1.5Mbps/256Kbps for $79 a month, 22GB/6GB fair access policy. My initial opinion is that it rocks when your only choice is nothing or dialup, *if* you can live with the latency. I went a month or two without a connection after moving from Memphis with a cable connection, it's kind of tough. So this is a pretty sizable improvement over nothing. I hope by this time next year to start seeing some WiMax deployments, but I don't expect to see any before then. :(

Firstly, you're shooting a short, it sounds like your first venture, don't spend the money buying outright... If you're in or near a sizable metropolitan area you shouldn't have any trouble finding a rental house, check around, get some rates... You're going to want more than a camera anyway, you'll want lights, stands, c clamps, gobos, scrims, gels, reflectors, a decent tripod (but don't get married to it, stay fluid), gaffers tape, lenses, etc. I'd try to find a weekend rate package on a decent HD camera, offline it to DV for editing, and then online it somewhere where you can do it in native HD. This isn't cheap of course, but I suspect you can find a rate on a decent rental package for about the same as you'd pick up a mid-level DV cam retail. Again, poke around a metropolitan area, snag yourself some film students (they also tend to work on the cheap, for free, or for beer), they also would likely be familiar with the rental houses or may have some interesting equipment themselves. I don't think an outright retail purchase is the way to go in your case... though, I'd be *really* careful about the water, most rental houses won't take kindly to you dunking their camera in the bathtub for that ECU of your leading lady's assests.

The source is available from the Khronos Group, though like I mentioned in another post the SDK is alpha and you have to sign an NDA to get it. It apparently uses 3 licenses, SGI Flavor of GNU Lesser GPL, SGI Free Software License B, and SGI Flavor of GNU General Public License GPL. Whew. I haven't looked over it very closely yet, so I can't judge the quality or functionality at this time.

  19. Indeed on OpenGL 1.5 · · Score: 4, Informative

This is good news, but I should point out the OpenGL 1.5 spec is not at this moment available yet, it's only been announced. Hopefully it will be available with some headers and implementations Real Soon Now (tm). I know the past few ATI Catalyst drivers have had experimental glslang extensions in them... Of course, it'd be nice if Microsoft would update their implementation such that OpenGL on Windows could make use of this without going through extensions, but I'm not holding my breath, nor is it really a huge issue.

The OpenML SDK is an alpha release and the final spec for it won't be out until about this time next year.

However, the Khronos Group also released the OpenGL ES spec and there's actually a couple implementations already available. OpenGL ES is for embedded systems and mobile devices, it's essentially just a subset of OpenGL. Seems like it might be pretty nifty...

Poker has had quite a resurgence as of late, both due to online play and media coverage. Chris Moneymaker was on Letterman one night and the World Poker Tour can be caught on the Travel Channel and sometimes older ones on ESPN or ESPN2. It's actually fairly enjoyable to watch. Nothing like seeing a guy go all in with for 800 grand on a stone cold bluff whilst his opponent has a pair (you see the hole cards on the tv broadcasts, at least on the Travel Channel). Some talk smack, some wear sunglasses, some play conservative, though most are fairly aggressive. I've learned quite a bit by watching them play. As others have mentioned and as the article alludes to, the game is more mathematical than reading your opponents, but that's not really what I've seen from watching the pros on the WPT. It's all about the people, the chips, the cards, and the math all seem secondary to your read on your opponent and your style and reputation. It's all very interesting, I suggest you catch a broadcast.
