The other poster had a good comment. I disagree with your comment though. Beige G3s were introduced in Spring of 98 (actually announced in the Fall of 97 1 month after my 8600/300 arrived). There's no reason for anyone to expect a fancy GUI OS to support 5+ year-old hardware. Nor would you expect any reasonable person to want to run the latest OS on hardware from 6+ years ago. That would be like trying to run Windows XP or Windows 2003 Server on a PII 333. I would only wish a fate like that to a few spammers I know. The B&W line was introduced the next Spring, 99. That makes it 5+ years old. That would equate it to a 450/500 PIII. Still no where near a machine I'd put XP on. 95 or 98, yes. ME never even on a new machine. 2K? If I stripped it down. XP, oh hell no. :) Now I would be happy if Apple managed to include some support for their newer OSs in the not quite so old hardware. That certainly seems reasonable. I think that will be possible thanks to OS X's BSD underpinnings. The OS should at least run slower and the machine need more RAM to run it. That's acceptable.

Actually, I've only used iCal a couple of times. At my last job we used Corporate Time, then owned by Steltor (I think) and now owned by Oracle. The Mac versions I tried for well over a years were horrible pieces of shit. Everytime I'd modify a meeting all the attendees and resources would be removed. Fortunately the office secretary was really nice and added meetings for me (even better because she controlled the conference room resource). The program got much better in the end. I was even putting personal things in it. I miss it now. Any recommendations on a good web-based calendar would be gladly accepted.

I think their hardware support is fine. It's just finding hardware vendors that make hardware for the platform that's the real problem. Companies like Adaptec and ATI try to gouge the Mac user by not releasing PCI cards that could work in either box (albeit with a quick firmware flash). They are the real problems. :-(

Hell I even got the marketing guy to understand this after explaining it a few times. He couldn't understand why we needed support. Eventually we made sense of it for him when we showed him how much it would have cost us to buy support for all the various RH releases we were running on all our different servers over all the years we've ran RH and not once use it. That finally made sense to him. Then he had to ask why we never needed it. The response was pretty simple too. We are incompotent. :-) Not saying you are either. Read my other rants on the notion of support. We're switching our entire production line to Gentoo within the year.

Take a peak at the Ironport A60 at refhost.net. BTW, refhost.net operates an MLM scam (pyramid scam). That A60 has been trained with over 275 MILLION recipient addresses. It has 600,000 queued up pieces of spam waiting for hotmail.com recipients alone. We're not talking about a PC made by IBM. This box was designed to fill our inboxes with their spam.

Those folks most likely have never left the limits of a major city for any length of time, if ever. They've never hunted. They've never participated in a marksmanship or cowboy action contest. They've never set foot in an unpopulated land where undomesticated animals can present a problem (mountain lion attacks are not uncommon despite what your state's wildlife fish and game dept might say, even here in Kansas). Odds are they've never even fired a firearm. They also aren't familiar with the statistics that show how the concealed carry of guns actually lowers crime. Well, I'm rambling. I'll stop now. :-)

Sure they sometimes defend someone we'd frankly like to see get the needle for saying something about race or something that's pro-Nazi. Few folks understand that to defend the 1st Amendment you have to defend all violations of that amendment, even those that you yourself don't agree with. This quote comes to mind:

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
written by Evelyn Beatrice Hall under the pseudonym S[tephen] G. Tallentyre.

The stigma about being a card-carrying member of the ACLU is just that, a negative stigma. It's not something to be ashamed of though. Would you be ashamed of being a card-carrying member of the EFF or EPIC? There's nothing shameful about asserting your rights.

I see it an awful lot though. People complain about the compile times and yet they are using a PII 350 with 128MB of RAM. That machine is what, 6 years old? Compile times with a version of Gentoo using 6 year old versions of software packages would be admirably quick. People are trying to use compile new versions of software with very dated machines. Anyhow, I see folks make that duration claims and thought I'd throw that tidbit out there. I haven't yet had time to install Gentoo (bought the CDs and even downloaded all 24GB of distfiles).
