  1. One big problem with this on Domain Based Spam Prevention? · · Score: 2, Informative
is that you'll have to use whitelists for all that legit domains. For example receiving spam from spammer.dyndns.com doesn't neccessarily mean that dyndns.com is a spamming domain. You may very well list not-a-spammer.dyndns.com if you chose to block dyndns.com. Likewise for homeunix.org. spammer.homeunix.org isn't the same as not-a-spammer.homeunix.org. You'll have a large and ever-growing whitelist if you use this tactic.

IMHO a better method would be to use the WHOIS information for a given domain name to match it to other spamming domains. I used to maintain the largest list of Alan Ralsky's spamming domains. My list was enormous. Alan had a bad habit (good for us anti-spammers though) of using identical or very similar WHOIS information in each of his spamming domains. This was the case with probably 90% of his spamming domains. He frequently used the same nameservers as well. I think a crafty programmer could come up with a way to use a Bayesian filter to identify spam by the WHOIS records of the domains in a given message that's been marked as spam. This would be a worthwhile project to me. Best of luck.

I can't begin to count the number of things I've bought on eBay that no one else even found that's to the seller fat-fingering the auction title and description. For example I bought a Cabletron SSR-2-B-128 for $57 the summer before last (loaded to the gills too). The reason I managed to buy it that cheap was because the seller repeated mis-spelled Cabletron as Cabeltron. He also used the S/N as the model number. Fortunately his photos of the actual unit showed the real model numbers. I can't begin to count the number of times I've had this luck. The way I find these auctions is I either fat-finger my search string or I view the seller's other auctions and find it in that list. It's well worth the effort IMHO.

I've heard numerous times that we could be driving 100 mile per gallon cars now if it wasn't for the oil industry greasing the wheels on those in the know. I'd like to know more about this. The other reply you received also makes a good point. Cars are so damned complicated nowadays that most people can't work on them even if they are experienced mechanics, let alone lay people. My 1993 Corsica is pretty cramped for space under the hood. A friend of mine's 1987 model was so spacious you could crawl in with the engine and shut the hood. LOL. I was shopping for a new truck 506 months ago. I was chatting the salesdroid up about motorcycles when he beckoned me to look under the hood of a new GM car (I forget the model). He asked me to figure out how to check the tranny fluid. No dice. I couldn't find the dip stick. That's when he pointed out that there isn't one. You can't check the tranny fluid. You can even add to it. GM engineered the vehicle in such a way that you can't perform simple preventative maintenance like tranny fluid level checks. You have to take it to the dealer's authorized service center for that. GM decreases dealer kickbacks but engineers a way to force consumers to spend more $$ at the dealer's shop. Nice.

The old adage "they don't make them like they used to" is sure as hell true in my book.

Buy your local loop guys a case of the good stuff and buddy up to them. See if they'd consider helping you set up a long range Ethernet link. it's quite possible and works well from all accounts I've heard. From the telco's perspective it takes a copper pair, tiny amount of rack space, and a enet port on a router or switch plus labor. The hardware isn't cheap. From what I last heard it's around $700 a port. If you buy the hardware, pay them something reasonable for the install, and something reasonable for a monthly BW charge, you should be all set. My local provider (and contract employer) offers dialup, cable, and DSL. They are also the local telco (very handy). They have set up long range DSL via unused fiber pairs before. They are also testing long range Ethernet. LR Enet is pumping out 1-3Mbps. Not too shabby. Wireless access is hopefully going to be considered soon.

Basically see if your telco will set up a LR Enet link if you pay for the HW, something for install, and something for monthly BW charges. They might just bite.

    Silversinksam - 1/21/04

I decided to test Arctic Silver 5, Arctic Silver 3, OCZ Ultra II Premium Silver Compound, and CompUSA Silver Thermal Grease. This test was not conducted to test performance, but rather to determine if these compounds have Silver as an ingredient.

All Testing was done twice, once on a jeweler's acid free 'Black stone', and the test was repeated on paper. The testing solution was Nitric acid and Muriatic acid that was pre-mixed professionally.

The tests produced some very disturbing results:

OCZ Ultra II Premium Silver compound and the CompUSA Silver Thermal Grease has ZERO silver in it.

The testing solution stayed orange - if it had any silver in it, the acids would turn varying degrees of red, depending on the purity of the silver present. OCZ claims that OCZ Ultra II Premium Silver compound is, "Made with 99.9% pure micronized silver, Over 70% silver content by weight".

I cannot concur and my tests conclusively show that there is Zero micronized silver present, and Zero silver content by weight.

Arctic Silver 3 and Arctic Silver 5 were also tested and both produced a blood red color, indicating 90% - 100% purity of Silver in both Arctic Silver 3 and Arctic Silver 5. Arctic Silver's claim of, "Contains 99.9% pure silver" by my testing is accurate and of the compounds tested, only Arctic Silver products produced results showing that Silver is in fact present.

The tubes in the picture below from left to right, Arctic Silver 5, Arctic Silver 3, OCZ Ultra II Premium Silver Compound and CompUSA Silver Thermal Grease.

In picture 3 below, from left to right is Arctic Silver 5, Arctic Silver 3 and OCZ Ultra II Premium Silver Compound. The compounds were placed on the paper and the acid was place on the compound undisturbed. Notice how the acid drop placed on the OCZ Ultra II Premium Silver Compound remains orange, indicating zero silver present:

When you go into a jewelry store and buy a sterling silver or a fine silver necklace, you expect the jewelry to be made of sterling or fine silver. The same should apply to silver thermal pastes - if the silver paste has no silver in it and the manufacturer says it does, that is misleading.

Based on my testing, I can not recommend OCZ Ultra II Premium Silver Compound or CompUSA Silver Thermal Grease, as they are both misleading products with zero silver in them. If you want a product that actually has silver as an ingredient, Arctic Silver 3, Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Silver Adhesive tested OK.

My understanding of the hands on part of the test is that it's difficult and most fail it the first time out. You also have to actually know something to pass the paper test. Eventually the CCIE won't be worth much at all and Cisco will have to create new certs to replace the dated and worthless ones. The best thing to get you hired though is experience and a demonstration of a willingness to learn, IMHO. CCIE doesn't hold a candle to a resume from a netadm with 15 years of experience. The extent of their networking experience is plugging their cable modem into the Ethernet jack on the back of their Gateway-built computer. That's all they've ever done (or will ever do). This is the same thing that happens with most testing in secondary grades. The students memorize just enough of the material to pass the test. They really don't know jack about what they were just tested over and they'll forget it all within hours of taking the test. They kept it in memory just long enough to get a piece of paper that says they know (knew) the data. If any old schmuck off the street can pick up a study guide for the CCNA and be prepared to take the actual test after spending a few hours reading that book then the cert is basically worthless.
