    It's about time someone did this. There's no reason for the airwaves to be publicly owned. "Public ownership" of a resource means that all decisions about a resouce have to occur in the context of politics. All decisions are political decisions.

    If the group that wants censorship has more votes than the group that doesn't want censorship, then there'll be censorship.

    When a private entity owns something, decisions are made based on the ideals of the private entity. If you don't like the decisions made about the resource, you can buy your own.

    It works for land. It'll work for the airwaves. Nice job UK.

    A bazaar is a big open space with lots of people. In a bazaar, you can see Indiana Jones running around turning baskets over. Don't trust the monkey.

    A cathedral is a big building made out of rock. It can be made into a library. In a cathedral, you might see Indiana Jones break open the floor and crawl around in the crypts. Watch out for the rats down there.

    So you see, Java is more like bazaar, and Linux is more like a cathedral.

    If it's before the election, then no one can find a job and everyone's starving to death in the streets. You can only get a job if you move to India, and then only as a male prostitute for the Indian tech workers.

    If it's after the election, then things are OK. You can find a good job and even get a raise.

    I guess it's a good thing the elction is over.

    When you're dealing with elite experts, "qualified" increasingly means "has the same opinions as me". So "qualifications" become unavailable to differing points of view.

    Factual accuracy has never been more important than in today's so-called "information age".

    Factual accuracy is less available from the old "conventional" sources of information than it used to be. They've become lazy, and they think we should trust their information because of who they are, not because they triple-checked everything to make sure they were correct.

    True expertise has given way to elitism. Elitism can't be trusted.

    But the problem is that more often than not the monkey's opinion of the truth or fact isn't in fact necessarily congruent with the truth or fact.

    The average guy is at least as likely to tell the truth as an elite expert.

    Furthermore, he's quite a bit more likely to understand the perspective of the average guy.

    It's not a top-down society anymore. We don't need to be led. No thanks.

    If the "monkeys" decide they like what they wrote, that's good enough -- it doesn't have to be Shakespeare. Experts, journalists, pundits, and cultural leaders don't matter anymore. Anyone can publish anything without asking for permission from the elite.

    Elites should go get jobs and create something, rather than trading on their alleged celebrity and stature. Because no one cares anymore.

    It's good.

    Because "programming" isn't the key factor in whether your nation is a "big player" in the global technology market. It is a factor, but it's a ways down the list.

    But I refuse to be swept up in this idiotic herd mentality, where all some fool has to do is say the right buzzwords - IP, GM, Monsanto - and we all get out the hounds and the torches and look for someone to hang.

    Do you frequent these boards? The herd mentality is stronger than it's ever been. The absolute thoughtlessness here can be breathtaking.

    They talk the way they've been conditioned to talk. They feel what they're supposed to feel. They're outraged precisely on que.

    My advice: Give up being upset by it. Being upset doesn't do you or anyone else any good.

    That's very silly reasoning. Because no single solution can fix every problem, lets not try to solve problems at all.

    Solving one problem at a time is no good. Neither is having a bunch of different solutions for the different problems: I criticize each solution for the problems it doesn't solve, ignoring the ones it does.

Because they're better than you, they have the perogative to straighten out problems -- problems in other peoples' lives -- problems no one asked them to fix.

    You just do what you're told. You're lucky your betters haven't put you in jail yet. Maybe tomorrow they will; today is self-admiration day.

    - Unions.
    - The anti-nuclear power crowd.
    - Trial lawyers.
    - Anti-corporate types (more efficient means more profits, can't have that).
    - The welfare-rights crowd.
    - Government regulators.
    - Class warriors (more efficient industry might make the rich richer, can't have that).
    - Diversity celebrators.
    - Minimum wage advocates.
    - OSHA
    - NIMBY and BANANA environmentalists
    - The anti-globalization crowd
    - The anti-outsourcing crowd
    - etc, etc, etc

    Most of them know what they're doing. They do it anyway.

    High school kids that need a job don't vote. Union members who have contracts that set their wages at minimum wage * 4 (or whatever) do vote.

    I just heard some guy (an expert) say this once. It was counter-intuitive, so it got my attention. And it made sense.

    No serious gun owner would want this. No police officer would ever use this. When you need your gun to fire, it has to work. There's no room for error.

    A lot of serious gun owners won't even use handguns with a safety. Because if the safety is on in the fraction of a second you it to work, you're dead.
