Drives often die because they get too hot , or too cold, don't turn PCs off overnight in winter if they are in a non heated enviroment. and install fans pointing at your drives !

Every distro applies their chosen set of patches to the vanilla kernel, uses their own specific configuration, and does their own testing.
Slackware doesn't I don't
I make my servers with 2.6.x and mostly slackware. I really do wish Linus would atleast put out a 2.6.11u on an "unstable" kernel , and then 2.6.12 for a "stable" one. - telegraph it for the stupid out there.
( am I the only one missing out on LKML since ECN was turned on )
1. Install Firefox. 2. Add *.windowsupdate.microsoft.com to trusted sites. 3. Disable everything in "Internet Zone." 4. Remove stuff from local zone. 5. Run Firefox and Make it the Default. 6. Grab a spyware program which adds sites to "Restricted Sites" 7. Turn Everything off for "Restricted sites" 8. Make windowsupdate.microsoft.com the start page.
just fine. (Unless they extract the key of course, but that will require more sophisticated sniffing software).
public/private key excrypt on public... , decrypt on private, the negotiate phase sends public keys both directions. - as the private key is never sent.... privacy!
Once I figure it out I'll try... I suspect it's the older KDE I have with KDEINIT growing over time. I'm usually to busy tring to work to have time to solve it on monday Mornings when it usually strikes.

locate CD in CD racks - 10 minutes searching. Insert CD-ROm in DVD Rom try to run , nope - insert CD message Insert in Burner ( i'd rather wear out the Read only unit) nope - Insert CD message Uninstall Virtual CD software try again in ROM try again in Writer
game crashes after 10 minutes.
- at least Playstations have a reasion to need the CD/DVD in the Drive.

KDE 3.2.x does exactly this
log out
ctrl + alt + bksp
log in
restart software
yay fast for 4 more days......
ksystemguard tells me when to much is swapped out...
but it's not linux , it's memory leaks in software that can be restarted!

but another windows choice....
I just have my server on a garage shelf, with cardboard nailed up to restrict ventilation/visability.
....
The computer, Hub and UPS seem to generate enough heat that the card allows cooking , but still keeps a comfortable temperature
and yes welding rods in an old fridge with teh bulb is very common , but I'd want a bit more ventilation than that for a computer
