  2. Give em some time they might really figure it out. on Scientists Discover Cows Point North · · Score: 1

I remember years ago OMNI magazine printed that scientist proved cheese on pizza burned the roof of peoples mouths. The next month they printed a retraction because, pizza sauce retained heat much longer than cheese.

So when do we really find out why they seem to point north?

Maybe thats why I am an ex-Systems Admin. I now make insulated wire in the local wire factory. Kinda funny as an extrusion operator working overtime I make more than I did as a systems admin, have fewer headaches and make more money. I even make more money than most of the managers.

Stupid me I want to go back to running computers.

    Not quite clear yet.

Just how is he supposed to aquire that knowledge. I guess the people you mentioned were born smart like yourself.

He didn't say he was creating the next big thing in compiler tech to replace all others. It sounds like he is in school trying to learn something new.

You must know my dad! He always said don't get wet until you know how to swim. Of course maybe this guy is jumping in the deep end and your just trying to save him.

  18. Not enough content on How Many TV Channels Will There Be In The Future? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Too many channels on tv are repeating movies and programs that have been seen a dozen times on their own channel and you turn to their sister network a few weeks later and it is premiering again.

Their are too many shows locked in the vaults and someone is controlling what goes out. Ever notice that different channels many times have the same actor for the entire month, in different movies. It happens way to many times to be a coincidence. Oh yeah they just happen to be out in a new movie in the theatre, HMMM!

  21. Why changing to the linux desktop is so hard. on IBM Wants to Port Office to Linux · · Score: 1

I always thought that changing to linux especially for any business is all the little applications that people use through the company. Whether they are custom databases, or accounting software, manufacturing software, old DOS applications they may have counterparts in Linux but the conversion costs are hugh. The costs are huge and the disruption can be great even when just a few locations or just a few people are using them.

Many companies have struggled just going from one Windows version to another just because of this. They eventually make the conversion but that is because most of these applications do convert. When they have to abandon them all, it is a much harder sell and decision to make.

  22. Change Jobs! on Getting Back Into Shape While At The Office? · · Score: 1

I lost my nice office job last year as systems administrator. After a year of looking sitting around getting fatter, I went to work for the local wire factory.

I work a twelve hour shift 5 or 6 days in a row, on my feet walking up and down an 150 foot pvc extrusion line where I insulate wire. I permanently lost thirty lbs am building muscle tone in my legs and arms.

The only computer I work with though has a 4 inch CRT that monitors the diameters of the wires and controls the extruders.

Anyway, I am looking to get fat again, sit down
    and enjoy some airconditioning.

  25. Unfair? on Microsoft Caste System · · Score: 1

Just ask a janitor, a secretary, or a hundred other menial jobs what it feels like, to be thought of being lower. Its why we now have custodial engineers and administrative assistants. New titles but the pay still sucks.

How about the systems administrators like myself that have only an associates but know and learn ten times more than some with bachelors, especially bean counting accountants. Whine and bitch. If life were fair we would be paid for the jobs we do. Then the custodians and assistants would be making the big money for taking care of all the crap.
