A Real Transformer?

mshiltonj writes "This is a video of real robot tranforming from a vehicle to a biped and back to a vehicle. It's some Japanese technology demonstration." Rumor is the next version will be a red semi + trailor and will be much more than meets the eye.

      No, no, they'll just make him into a PowerMaster, since the fuel there is poisoned. Of course, he and the powermaster engine Hi-Q become psychically bonded or some shit and then he goes to Cybertron to become the resurrection of Optimus. #80 was a good ending.

      Nah, if we wanted to spoil it, we'd tell you what happens to him after he died... The oh-so-noble sacrifice itself was pretty much predictable from the Matrix-esque slow-mo sequence with the actually-quite-good rock soundtrack... (Also the fact that the film was widely billed as killing off quite a few established characters, and heralding the arrival of a new generation.)

We can keep on calling everyone we disagree with "The Great Satan" and murdering them with bombs, but as soon as they hurt our feelings by saying that the founder of our religion told us to kill everyone we disagree with - which he did, or at least we keep on acting like he did, and one would imagine that we would know our own religion well since we are willing to kill in its name - and that we are a bunch of barbaric murderous lunatics, we'll fly to a rage and start rioting and murdering random people and therefore proving the second accusation correct as well.

      No, he will not die. The events in Transformers: The Movie should have taken place in the year 2005 (see scene two in the script). And, as best as I can recall, there wasn't an attack on Autobot City last year. Therefore, one can only assume that we are in an alternate timeline, one in which Optimus Prime will die in some other way.

      Now, this may be a much more perilous timeline, as the attack on Autobot City led directly to the destruction of Unicron at the hands of the Autobots. Will he be destroyed before he reaches Earth or Cybertron? Only time will tell . . .

      Only on slashdot would people equate Transformers with Star Wars and King Kong (in a post lower down).

      Strangely, I was a kid of the 80s, and loved my transformers toys, but never watched the show or movie. I wasn't being funny! I really do plan on seeing it (eventually).

      Just think about how bad the real Optimus Prime must feel now. You can also find this guy on Wikipedia now too. From the link:

      When the original post on Robots Dreams http://www.robots-dreams.com/2006/02/a_car_and_a_r ob.html was picked up by Engadget it did generate enough hits that the robot-fan.net server crashed. After that the video was moved to youtube.com to handle the traffic. The WR-07 robot was developed by Nakamura-san of Himeji Soft Works in Japan. It's not currently for sale, but who knows. The interest has been way beyond anything Nakamura-san hoped for. There's more information in English on the original post.

      Unlikely.

      The robot in the video clip's alternate mode is a wheeled vehicle. Therefore, he is likely to be an Autobot, and thus harmless to humanity.

      Unless he's a Stunticon or something, but I didn't spot a Scramble City gestalt connector anywhere on him, so I think we can safely rule that out.

      From the look of it, you weren't pretty happy when it happened on your comment. What makes you think that GP would enjoy it? If you want to defend your writing style from a-holes, it makes more sense to complement people who have a style similar to yours. They'll do it more often and a-holes will have to get used to it.

      It makes me smile when Slashdotters can derive facts, misconceptions, and all sorts of esoteric knowledge from simple jokes. That's part of what I like about Slashdot culture. Even the structure of Slashdot discussion threads facilitates random offtopic branches. If you think a branch is stupid, skip it; there's always more to read.

      The Japanese fixation on robots runs deep and many mecha series (like the Yuusha (Brave) series) are all based on transformable mecha. If you think of how useful it could be in some situations it does make sense though.

      Lets say you're in a destroyed city area. Trying to get around on wheels would be difficult in some situations (large walls and such), transforming you could climb over them.

      They could also develope this into a plane, so when it lands it could transform and dock in a hanger instead of holding run way space. Or give it a large gun and have a military vechile.

      Lots of uses for transformable mecha, just got to look at how ineffective our little boxs on wheels are.

      a baby learns to walk on two legs because it has two legs. similarly, if we want robots that can be nimble on two legs we should focus on developing bipedal robots, not just giving up and calling them ineffective because of present day limitations

      Babies can't walk upright until they learn to. An AI meant for walking will have that information programmed in and walking will be the only thing the AI has to worry about. You're comparing apples to oranges.

      Of course we could make them as effective as humans if we work on them long enough but what's the point? Six legs offer much more stability and can handle rougher terrain (and imagine how nimble that would be at the same level of advancement as a good biped!). It won't trip easily (and can take a hit without falling over, could even lose limbs and still function) and I don't see an advantage in using only two legs. Most bipeds use two legs only because they need their arms for something else (tools, wings, whathaveyou) and they usually aren't as fast as the animals that use all four legs to walk. On a robot we can use any number of legs so we could give them the stability of four or six legs AND any number of arms for doing whatever it was meant for.

      We could build cars like segways but that'd be pointless.

      However, bipedal designs are ineffective. We'd give them four or six legs for stability.

      Bipedal design is a lot better than almost any other when you need to operate in thight spots, since it occupies very little area (stand with your feet together, and see how small area they actually cover). A four-limber bipedal design can also use the arms for manipulation or, if neccessary, as locomotive helpers.

      Remember, being able to stand on two feet doesn't mean that you can't use more if the situation warrants.

      No, not every can go and make such things else we would have seem them already. They have been drawn for many many years, but nothing has been actually built. It is hard to get the parts in the right place and to have it balance itself etc etc etc.

      These 'toys' have a strong practical commerical future. High road speed robots than can climb over rough terrain if needed. Weapons systems. Helpers.

      Please go fetch your Lego and build one for all of us on /. and give the plans too.

    Reminds me of two Chuck Norris jokes.
    1) Chuck Norris eats transformer toys in vehicle mode and poos them out transformed into a robot.
    2) The original theme song to the Transformers was actually "Chuck Norris--more than meets the eye, Chuck Norris--robot in disguise," and starred Chuck Norris as a Texas Ranger who defended the earth from drug-dealing Decepticons and could turn into a pick-up.       People who obsess over the toys they grew up with aren't nerds, anyway.

      My favorite things to play with as a child were discarded electronic things like old tape recorders, TV sets, etc. I don't think that's unusual for a nerd.

      Trendy kids played with whatever was shiney and advertised heavily on TV. They most assuredly were NOT nerds in that respect. But right now it's kinda trendy to pose as a nerd.

      Several thousand. This is obviously a robo-one battler. Use lots of powerful servos, a little plastic or aluminum, and build yourself a bipedal (not necessarily humanoid though) wrestler. R/C actually.

    Fantastic! I hope they release a robot with a realistic alternate mode for the consumer market. This could be bigger than...erm.... those stupid robo sapien creatures we got at christmas.

    It's better than the stupid auto-transforming Armada Optimus Prime. For those who have never seen it, the trailer transformed by itself and became the legs for Super Optimus Prime. Unfortunately, the mechanism is dog slow, sounds like an aircraft taking off, and is completely dull.

    Parallel parking? No problem, just step into the parking space and transform back into a car. Or if the space is tight, leave it in biped form, or use the motorcyle space.

    Long line to get into the parking garage? Just tranform into a biped and climb up the side of the parking structure to the empty levels and park. Although that's only possible if the parking is free, like everywhere but L.A. But that would be great for weekends at Vegas.

    If your employer has a rideshare/transit reimbursement program, I wonder if taking this to work in biped form would count as walking?

    Ok, so this thing can transform but it is stupid beyond belief. Did anyone else notice that at the very end of the clip (i mean, less than 1 second) that the robot looks as though it is going over the edge of the table? Hands-up for anyone who wants a Citroen (French car currently using a transformer idea in ads where car changes to robot and does hip-hop) that drives itself off of the nearest cliff? No?     USC-ISI is actually working on something that could be much more incredible than this. Their project (still in research phase) is known as SuperBots. They want to be able to build large self-configurable robots that can adapt to any terrain. They have videos available. These guys are currently being looked into by the LEAG (lunar exploration analysis group) of NASA's JPL (here is some commentary by an actual JPL engineer who went to the last LEAG conference). It is basically a nerd wet dream to imagine these things on a 10x scale powered by small nuclear engines stomping all over Mars and the Moon doing experiments, exploration, and generally being awesome.

    It looks more like a thing with 4 wheels that transforms into a thing with 4 wheels on the end of sticks. The idea with the original transformers was the car was indestinguishable from a normal car and transformed into something that was indisputably a humanoid, but this is only a car because we're told it's a car and a humanoid because we're told it's a humanoid.

    With the number of transformer toys successfully designed and sold, it's hard to believe no-one has ever made one work under its own power.
