they get hired back at 2-3x original salary, because this is actually CHEAPER for the company to do, because it does not have to pay benefits to asid former employee.
the truth is - nope, IT spending in the vast majority of comapnies out there should be drastically reduced.
I know of a NE Power Company that spends 10k/year/employee on IT expenses.
Which is insane. They arent a software company, they arent a development company, these expenses are a pure expense that generates no revenue.
none. nada, zilch.
how can you justify paying a HS graduate with a "certification" that tells people to reboot their machine as a fix for everything souble what you would pay a marketing person with a college degree?
you cant - there is no justification. Then you consider perpetual hardware upgrades and software licensing, you get an even worse picture.
Look at it this way - if you spend $1500 on a home appliance, like a fridge, washing machine, how long do you expect it to last? 15 years? 20? more?
and you want businesses, who arent in the computer industry, to buy new equipt every 2-3 years? not gonna happen.
then theres MS's latest yearly tax. if MS would have had it ready 3 years ago, it would have worked, but not now, no way - businesses dont care what they run, they just want to keep their expenses down.
that, and the whole "file cabinet" idiom is idiotic...
so... i've got this file cabinet... with file folders... that have file folder in them... that have files folders in them... that point to other files, but look like the files are in that folder, when really they're across the street in storage?
right, and if i were building a bridge, and the civil engineer i contracted said "i'm not going to use any of this "old" technology, i'm going to do everything from the ground up with NewTechniques that have never been tested"
i'd fire him on the spot.
time to stop re-inventing the wheel - we've got perfectly acceptible wheels, now its time to perfect and hone them.
back off your rush-bo influenced consumerism starbucks-fueled angst, k?
how much debt do you have? hrm? how much time to you owe to the company to pay it off? do you have a retirement plan? what happens to your health care coverage when you get fired because you just became too expensive?
techs need a union, especially the lower-on-the-totem pole ones - the sysadmins, the DB programmers, the MSCE types - they are all workers. Skilled Labor.
They need protection. Sorry you bought into the lies, but businesses and owners will never look out for you. as you said, they are interested in their bottom line.
since they wont look out for you, or us, we must look out for each other.
it is not my job to consume, and it shouldnt be yours either.
listen to yourself. you're happy with all those "things" and "stuff" built by child labor in thrid world countries?
its amazing, many countries all over the world have standards of living better than ours, yet dont need 3 cars per family, 4 televisions, 5 cell phones and a partridge in a pear tree.
how about they produce things that improve quality of life? nah, youd rather have cheap plastic toys that go "bing".
i pity you - you have yet to see that there is more to life than gadgets and cool toys.
no jackass, unions are an anathema to management, and the owners.
i dont know about you, but i'm sure that i am part of LABOR. not the owners.
the owners have no interest in our well being. none. zippo, zilch.
you are always welcome to go non-union when we decide to unionize. always.
why is it that you cant admit that you are just labor, just another factor of production - regarded as no different than the computer you work on.
we need to band together, because we do produce the wealth, and without us, capital and natural resources mean shit.
they dont look out for our best interests, so we must look out for our own.
have fun trying to do it by yourself. we see how well that worked before, and frankly i cant believe that you're stupid enough to fall for their lies AGAIN.
they get hired back at 2-3x original salary, because this is actually CHEAPER for the company to do, because it does not have to pay benefits to asid former employee.
but that is a very small market when compared to the wider office PC market.
the vast majority of PC's in office situations, only need like a pII 450 and 128 MB... and about 6 GB of RAM..
if your doing CAD, modelling or something truly computron intesive, then you need something faster.
but disposable hardware and software is not economical.
would that be TuXP?
dude - finance people are happier when they dont have expenses at all, instead of having expenses that can be amortized quickly.
chirst... kindof like my wife telling me how much she saved me at that 20% off sale that she spent $500 at.
gee, thanks honey...

you're girlfriend doesnt want you to design games in bed?
i pity your sex life.
except for that pesky findings of fact that says that Microsoft IS a monopoly.
oh yeh, and that nasty findings of law that says that MS has been using said monopoly to further extends its monopoly and compete unfairly.
you're a flaming asshole who is rallying against privacy, yet...
you have a "donate to the eff" signature.
asshole.
nah, the idiom of "goto's are evil, and you will fail this class if you use them" has been beaten into every programmer by the end of freshman year.
dude, those of us who know when is proper to use a goto, dont encourage people who dont understand why to use a goto, to actually use goto's.
no flame war needed...
if you dont know why you should use them, and when, you shouldnt write a goto.
wha???
large intestines primary purpose is to recover water from bolus (mashed up food).

you mean ADA...
i hate the 20 second time limit.... blah blah blah...
then how would we keep tricking the ICA Server into handing us temporary licenses?
no no... thats called "synergistic leveraging"... its a really neaty concept....
... MS has a nice hunk of ziff-davis, and they kindof fellate MS every now and again...
kindof like when zdnet whores for MS
so?
wanna give me a loan at 0.72% interest that matures in 100 years? i'll take 1,000,000, thanks.
(and then promptly invest it in tax-free muni's and live off the interest whilst paying you back, sucker)
but new developers have a 6 month time before they are productive.
oh yeh, all those IBM think clients out there running Windows CE, with back ends on NT boxes... oh yeh, there's Lottttssss of those...
the next computer revolution is going to slap you upside the head and you wont know what hit you...

management has no interest in paying a respectible wage. they are interested in pay someone the lowest wage they can.
they dont care about you, they dont care about your family. they care about their own pocket. thats it.
the H1-B's are cheaper than you are. thats it. nothing about american spirit - they are taking food off of your table.
we need to band together. we've needed it for a while.
union. now.
hey, come on - the girls are better looking here, and they have all their teeth.
as opposed to up the eyenon...
