Ten years from now these kids will be wanting an interface that is familair. They will run back to KDE their whole lives if they can (if other people can read thier office docs and they can read others).
I have seen this as well at my own company. We have "clean" code that is our own, and stuff we've got to throw over the fence (GPL). The stuff we don't have to give back never get's the attention that GPL code gets as far as comments and documentation.
this article and this one are the best I could find, but I think there is an even more similair one out there. Notice that the cash estimates aren't all the same. maybe its a poor Katz estimate in that other one...wouldn't be so bad if it was rounded, but $30B vs 40B$ is a lot
Interestingly that is the sentiment that should be shared by the world. When one speaks of someone elses grandmother doing wrong to an ancestor I believe you have nearly the proper response....the completion of the sentiment would be toward those who instill hate in the next generation "No one did sh@# to me"
I know that many of us have access to those little license certificates that microsoft bundles with their software. Maybe we could gather up enough of them to pass audits. We could rent out the entire collection of licenses to whoever is getting audited at the time for a fraction of the cost of actual licenses..
If the average file size increases to something more like a half gig instead of a couple hundred k won't disk io be prohibitively slow? I mean copy an entire 80 GB hard drive right now takes forever....even if it is at 15k rpm. I wish that disk io could at least attempt to keep up with processor speeds and storage capacity
I agree entirely that to be a technicall manager one must have technical experience and have managerial experience.
My current manager has both ( and is very experienced on both sides ) he has two team leads under him that act as an interface for the two programming teams. This has worked very well. Possibly the only regret in this situation is that the team leads (both very technicall people) end up having to do more managerial type "action items" rather than helping the teams.
I just purchased a machine and selected red hat as the operating system from yeehamall. When The machine came it had win 98 installed and a couple of redhat cds just thrown into the box. I wonder if I paid the M$ tax or if they just put windows on every hard drive that leaves the dock.
so with an infrared light source you could take great pictures in what appears to be the dark....interesting.

perhaps all the airlines need is to issue flight certifications. perhaps a one time all inclusive background check that clears you, like a liscence to fly on a plane. that way you can just show that at the counter and presto. anyone without one of these gets the finger up the butt.

Well I'd be willing to bet that we could never pawn Katz off to USA today (never ever), but I bet there is someone who could actually sit down with us and say IAAL and here's your problem. Maybe he could be Ebert to Katz or something. that would make me read/. more often than I have been lately
kazaa is so 5 minutes ago why aren't ppl using the newer stuff like eDonkey or such
actually the universe would include the machines that are trying to simulate it thus entering a recursive "chicken in the egg" problem.

My entire company (~150 ppl) just gave in and rented out a nearby theater May 17 10:00 am...we're all goin' and it counts as a work day.
I test web proxies. I happened to have an n2h2 filter turned on and it blocked the link to this discussion. I guess everyone else thinks its porn too.
mod this up

not me. I'd rather fight the good fight here than freeze the rest of my life. Several loud people can arrange the future for the silent millions.
plus you have enough time at work to post to slashdot.
I think this should be an ask business people and lawyers...not an ask slashdot.
I thought april 1 was over? I'm always so clueless...is there something I'm missing? Why the lies?

Could someone tell me what the hell a PHB is. I thought I used to think I was smart.
