Were they told they couldn't use the network to violate copyright, or that they couldn't run kazaa? A poster above who claims to have been nailed by this system says that you get nabbed simply for connecting to the fast track network, regardless of whether or not you're [up/down]loading. So if I connect in order to download a linux distro (hey, it could happen) I lose my internet connection with no compensation, just because I might possibly have been able to download copyrighted material. Why not just pull the whole network down? I mean, hey, you can download "pirated" software/music/movies from the web, or ftp, or IM them amongst friends...better not let anyone use a browser - they may violate a copyright! Starving record company suits demand recompense!!!

No, it's actually nothing like that at all. Look at the situation in Iraq. Soldiers dressed as civillians. Children with guns. Men dressed as women. Great job the 'shock and awe' campaign did cutting off water and electricity, except that it mainly harmed the innocent civillians. Mis-targeted bombs have hit hospitals before. Imagine if instead of just blowing up a few people, you shut off all of the life support. We keep hearing about how accurate new weapons are, then hearing about accidental civillian casualties. Yet through it all, U.S. troops have sustained heavy losses from an enemy with very little in the way of technological infrastructure. It seems everyone underestimated the lethality of an opponent who supposedly had little training and resources, but nobody was counting on their dedication to their cause. An enemy who is willing to use his own body to deliver a payload isn't going to give up when his watch stops ticking. And since the U.S. is all about fighting terrorism these days, that EMP won't be too useful. That's all I was trying to say.

  6. But still they don't get it on E-Bombs: Technology Update · · Score: 4, Insightful

And in these times when men are willing to sacrifice their lives by crashing planes and strapping bombs to themselves, that EMP won't do you much good. How does an EMP stop the guy in a heavily populated area from emptying an M16 into a crowd, or blowing up a U-Haul full of kerosene and fertilizer? So long as people are dedicated to their cause, they will fight, with or without their Palm Pilots. The Romans did.

  12. Re:Seems like a fair system on Sony Music Testing New Copy Protection · · Score: 1

Of course the average consumer is going to use the DRM'ed stuff - the average consumer's PC will load it as soon as the CD hits the computer and they probably won't even notice (I expect WMP plays CDs on Win by default). But the average consumer isn't the one who's ripping discs to mp3 and sharing on KaZaA. And the guys that want to do that will have no problem finding a way around the DRM. So for all the money spent on DRM, for them to go back to "it'll play in WMP or, if you know what you're doing, you can rip it to mp3" is like admitting that this whole "war on piracy" was a waste of dollars.

What I'd really like to see is broadband providers handing out external modem/firewall combos boxes. Lock it down by default and set it up with an easy web interface (accessible to the internal network only) for opening up ports as needed. I remember an old firewall I had (I think it was a DLink) that had dropdown menus for services you wanted to open ports for (ICQ, Quake, Web server, etc.) so all you did was select what you wanted to open and you didn't need to know port numbers. And we don't need to worry about dial up users - they're not the ones hammering me with code red and nimda packets all day long.

Musicians are interested in music, not money.

You just hit the nail on the head. So many times I've had people (family, friends, strangers) say "wow, that club was packed last night! I bet you guys made a fortune!". Fact is, my band *almost never* gets paid for shows, and I know for fact that most bands in my local scene are the same. Most bars will give you free drinks (a cooler full of beer and water bottles) and some offer a cut of the door take (after they've paid a sound guy) but that's about it. We do it because we love it. Non-musicians don't seem to understand that, but I guess it kind of equates to free software. You do it because you enjoy it, and because your 'audience' enjoys it too. And even if I never make a nickel doing it, I'll never stop. I have no problems packing up my gear at 3am, driving an hour to get home, and being out of the house by 7am for work because I love what I do. Anything we make on CD sales (burned at home, sold for $5) or what measly bit a bar may send our way all gets tossed in the community weed fund. I wouldn't turn down a *good* record deal, but I won't sign my life away to get it.

The "travesty" isn't what Eolas is doing. The real bitch about this is that they are within their legal rights. The problem is that software should not be patentable at all. Copyright law is more than enough. Look at how many books and movies follow the same basic formula, but you can't patent "hero comes along to overthrow the evil empire and save humanity". It's completely moronic that I could write a browser plugin system without ever seeing Eolas code (do they have any?) and get sued.
