I get most of my American news from Jon Stewart on the Daily Show or CNN (only American news station I get). To me, CNN is to the right of centre. I can't think of any American news programs that would be considered far-left in Canada.
The Daily Show is actually very similar to a weekly show we have on CBC called "This Hour has 22 Minutes". CBC's actual news coverage if shown to a Fox News watcher would definately be labelled as far-left much like the CBC's older foreign brother the BBC.
At an engineering school you will very rarely see demonstrations
You think that might be because engineering schools are filled with nerds?
Demonstrations are a social activity and let's face it, we nerds are not good at social activities. Try polling the students at a few engineering schools on political issues. I have no idea what the results would be but it might be more accurate than "engineering students don't have many protest rallys, protesting is a liberal activity, therefore engineering students aren't liberals"
I'm in SW Ontario (near London). I didn't see anything but clouds last night. Oh well, I've seen the northern lights before. Light pollution isn't bad enough to drown them out all the time.
It sounds like you're assuming that the box always tells the truth, that it can't be tampered with and that it's always properly calibrated in the first place to tell the correct speeds.
Hey, these boxes could be perfect technology that never fails or is off, but I doubt it.
I realize that you're partly joking, but so as not to confuse Americans, I have to point out something.
In the US, you have 2 main parties. At any one time, those 2 parties split the votes pretty well evenly. Sometimes more democrats get seats, sometimes more republicans do. Every once in a while, a 3rd party candidate or and independant will get elected.
In Canada, despite what the parent post says, we have 5 main parties who regularly get seats in federal parliament. These parties are the NDP (left-wing), the Liberal Party (centre or centre-left), the PC Party (right-wing), the Canadian Alliance (right-wing), and the PQ (they want to separate from the country). Last I heard, the Canadian Alliance and PC parties were going to combine into a united right-wing party. Every one of the parties listed has a number of MPs (members of parliament) in the house of commons.
We also have a number of fringe parties who tend to not get any elected members and are mostly concerned with one or a few issues. These include the Freedom party (they want to privatize everything), the Green party (environmentalists), the Marijuana party (take a guess), the Family Coalition party (a bit like Republicans), and the Communist party (they're Communists).
The thing with the parent post is that in one way they are correct. The Liberal party is the only party that seems to get a seats across the country. The Canadian Alliance is concentrated in the western provinces, the PQ is only Quebec, and the NDP and PC parties only have a few seats.
I had this problem with Wolf3D, but Doom and later first person shooters never seemed to bother me. It took a bit but I finally realized that Wolf3d has no head-bob motion. Running around in that game feels like you're on some sort of hovercar with no up/down movement. That's what seemed so wrong to my brain.
Not only that, but corporations don't have a limited lifetime either. There's no "dies after 120-130 years no matter what" sticker on them. As long as they don't go bankrupt, they're immortal.
Besides, watching movies on the computer sucks ass. A good viewing environment for movies is ultimately very important to me.
Most movies that are still in theatres are released in SVCD, supported by many DVD players. When a DVD version comes out, it will usually be put out in Xvid (or some other mpeg4 based codec) or SVCD.
I live in the boonies but I also have a decent internet connection. The closest store that sells CDs is 10-15 minutes away by car. So here are the steps for a teenager in my neighbourhood to buy a CD.
1. If they have a car, start driving. If not, ask to borrow the car or get a ride.
2. Drive for 15 minutes and find a parking spot.
3. Walk into the mall and get to the store which sells the CD you want.
4. Find the CD, get in line, pay $15-$20 for the CD.
5. Walk back to the car, drive back home for 15 minutes. If the car has a CD player, play the CD. If it doesn't wait until you get home to play it.
Here's the steps for a teen to download the music.
1. A one-time step. Get Kazaalite, a Gnutella client, whatever p2p client you want.
2. Search for the song.
3. Download the song.
4. Listen to the song. If it's misnamed, download another search result and listen to that.
I didn't know there were any 3rd party companies offering access through the cable lines. I knew that the CRTC had ruled that they have to be opened up, but my local cable company (Rogers) seems to have gotten away with declaring a very expensive amount as the amount they get to charge the other companies for access to their infrastructure (I believe it's around $30/subscriber/month). So no companies in my area have decided they can make money with that overhead.
If Bell would upgrade my local exchange, there would be a nice selection of DSL providers. Some only provide service in certain areas, but others will provide service anywhere Bell does.
Bell were the ones who had the monthly caps. They've recently got rid of them. Rogers had planned to put in caps but after Bell abandoned them, Rogers said no to caps too.
Cable has no competition in Canada, but DSL has lots of competition almost everywhere it's available.
In Ontario parallel parking is on both driving tests (That's right, two tests, blame graduated licensing) but if you fail that portion, it's not an automatic fail. It depends on where you are, but a lot of places don't have spots that require knowing it.
You're entitled to your opinion of course, but I loved Hominids, its sequel Humans, and am waiting to pick up a copy of Hybrids. There's something about Robert J. Sawyer's writing style that, to me, makes his books hard to put down. What was it that you didn't like about the story? Was it something in the plot, something to do with the writing style, a hatred of all things Canadian?

Duff Man thinks you whiny Liberals should shutup and is thrusting in your general direction. Oh yeah.

They get winter in London?
From the chart I'm looking at, the average temp in January is 36F. That's not even 0C.
It's not winter until your snot freezes.
Besides, Ontario grows quite a lot of their own apples
Fresh, Ontario grown apples are very difficult to find in the winter.

It's not a hard copy and there are ads on the page, but this might be the comic you are looking for.

Hopefull this will be the first step. ....or we could tell Bush there is oil on Mars =)
Oil on Mars.
They finally started payments in January 2003. Of course, they keep an "administrative" fee for themselves. More info on their site
If President Bush gets re-elected with this kind of pseudo security still on the books, I'll finance the revolution.
Ah, but will the revolution be televised?
Arrrr. Any of ye landlubbers who dares click on that link may notice that there be no mighty pirates in North America. My grog brewery is failing.

The only way he loses is if you decide he is a great author, so you pirate all his books.
Shit, I just bought all the Ender books. Are you telling me I could have avoided paying money and just got copies of them? Damn.
Oh wait, I can't stand reading e-books. Never mind.

That's when Tv-out might come in handy.

It's simply not possible to fly a helicopter of that size off of a smaller vessel
That's not entirely true. The Canadian Navy flies Sikorsky CH-124 Sea King helicopters (22.12 metres) off destroyers and frigates.

Those that live in an area who can get DSL don't use Rogers. I live in a place where my options are dialup or Rogers.
What if you reversed the polarity?
