Well, sorta.
My son's office (Navy Recruiting, West Michigan) has been the only recruiting office in the region *not* to have their 2k boxen be hit through the recent RPC holes - or so I'm told.
That's because I know enough to send him links to patches when necessary. He patches his office, it keeps working.
Just talked tonight; I told him that he should fix me up with a phat DoD contract. He said "Do you really want to work and live in Detroit?" Apparently the nearest IP dept is near Gratiot, and downtown...and they don't allow telecommuting.
I said..."Phuk that. I wouldn't pass the piss test anyway:)."
Stupid Moderators. Flamebait my Ass. You (stevebob2019) raised an interesting point. Good for you. If I had points right now I'd defend your post with one.
A nice old guy (now gone, RIP Bruno) had a home in a very rural area near me - out in the sticks, as they say. He had gradually upgraded from a TI-99 to a Tandy, and then to a generic locally-built mini-tower.
Bruno calls one day, and says his 5 1/4" floppy drive had quit working, and upon arrival I proceeded to check for a Post-It note stuck in there, etc. I cleaned it with the solution and disk kit. No Cigar...
Figuring the drive needed to be replaced, I popped the case...and was a little appalled to see some little turdlets on the floor of the box. Hmmm.
When I removed the drive, the real problem was apparent: the mouse had a taste for the tiny wires that go to the top read/write head, and had chewed all of them clean through!
The guy who sold him the box gave him a new drive, as it was a 9-pin knockout on the back that proved to be the little rodent's entrance door - and had carelessly been left uncovered, giving access to the 7-level condo that was Bruno's mini-tower.
whbox.com has some originality, I agree. Didn't spend too much time there, but wanted to tell you that a computer can't be "taylored" (unless that's your name:)...if you want to emphasise the custom-built thing...the word is "tailored"
From ESR's open letter (see below for working link):
I'd ask if you'd found the right sort of isolated wasteland for your citadel of dread yet, but that would be a silly question; you're in Utah, after all.
Now, I've been to Utah years ago, and I think it's one of the most beautiful states of the union - especially the Northern parts...I think the "Hundreds of Customers" he speaks of have just been alienated by his remark. That must be the total amount of customers loyal to the SCO product line - but do they all live in Utah?
Most devices that use the tripod screw (i.e. winders, motor drives, etc.) have another 1/4-20 SAE threaded hole to allow the photographer to use a tripod.
I'm sure the WiFi module has one...even though I didn't see a pic showing the bottom. The article states that they only had images provided by Nikon...
Same situation repeats here...the funniest one was when I was really fed up (and Comcast is no better). The Attbi guy insisted that I do the unplug, reboot thing, so I humored him for about the amount of time that would have taken.
During the last couple minutes of this, their stuff started working again, about 50 miles away or more - somewhere past the gateway I couldn't get to. Television on the same coax worked all this time...
I said to the dumbass: "OK. It's back up. Guess what? I didn't do anything you told me to...so guess where the problems are, you incompetent TWIT!"
Then I hung up and called back - insisted on speaking to a manager, to whom I reported this guy's ignorance, as well as his refusing to use the logic I supplied - 3 of my friends along the same segment of coax were also down.
The laptop affected by the recall is the FR series, or FRV in the United States, a popular model with a large screen and with a price starting around $1,500.
I remember calling him in Brown Deer way back (about results of the S.E.A. lawsuit and such)- just to tell him how cool it was that he created the Zip algorithms and published them in a show of spite;-).
IIRC, the algorithms were placed in the Public Domain? I think if he were alive today, efforts for compatibility would prevail...
The cost is a little steep, but to make the device the size of a hearing aid, there's gotta be some considerable R&D (etc) involved.
Essentially, the "Choral Effect" is most likely the same pitch/time shifting technology that we musicians enjoyed since the 70s.
A variation on flangers, the chorus stomp-box was a welcome addition to guitar, keyboard, and vocals (etc.) - but it required a wall-wart or an almost endless supply of 9v batteries.
because I have 16mm film that needs to be archived, although it's already set for more years than digital media allows.
My father had these films, several "epics" in the TV world, in print format, from his years with a Michigan based outdoor show. They are well-kept for now, but need to be archived, to save the film from being put through the transport over and over again.
Weather that's goo enough is up to the individual.
They do enough bad stuff to satisfy anyone's faming needs. I'm glad that a fair number of perople do oppose this, though.
WTF? This gets modded up? This moderator's just as illiterate as the poster...or as much in a hurry as the moderation just "gets things done quickly..." - better hope that the doctor who has his life in your hands spells the prescription right before you start taking it...or hope that he/she knows the difference between UV and IV...
If you put it there, you can be sure that it won't be accepted.
Bugger off.
Well said - thanks. I agree.
Wholeheartedly, I agree. It literally hurts my ears^H^H^H^H eyes to see this misuse of common words.
I'll let the idiots who actually fall for it to pay me to clean their systems after they are done being stupid. I need the income, OK? Times is hard!

Fuck You! That's NOT Funny! Asshole!
Sounds like the mare was trained by a former wife of mine =(

Thanks for the link. That clears some questions I'd had.

Here is the complete open letter from ESR as the one to linux.com didn't work, but their homepage directed me to the newsforge page...

After all - my clients have given me these relics because they didn't want to deal with them. As little as I print, it would not matter.
For images, I massage the JPG and put it where it needs to go. Print What?

Your other ideas are interesting, and I admit that the first thing I thought about was copper between homes...with enhancements to extend it.
wel, iz u poot eet dat wey, ya, wel, ezzactley
