My Uncle, Todd Porter, was constantly looking forward with his games. I beta tested Doom when I was in grade school... didn't know what it was, of course. He no longer works with id, but you can see a lot of his work in the source of the games. He was unpopular for writing gobs of asm code.
Damn that guy could type fast.
Google Todd Porter with id or with Ion Storm, then you'll know who he is.
Am I the only one that saw "Delaware" and immedately thought along the lines of "spyware" "malware" and "shareware"... I was trying to think of what this strange new "Delaware" was...
The prices on old equipment will not drop "like a rock" at all. You may see a $200 hit. That's it. And even then, those machines can be purchased through education channels at that price right now. So you won't save tons of cash, just a bit. If you want a really good deal, you have to wait about 2 upgrades down and hope an Apple store kept a demo 2.0Ghz G5 on display (cause they're all identical) and they dump it for whatever comes out. Then they discount it pretty big. ~$600 off. I saw iBooks at a store (1Ghz and 800Mhz) going for around $500-$600 total. Those were giant deals, and the store had about a half dozen of them. Those could be sold on eBay right now for a profit.
AppleCare can be purchased for a Powermac and be applied to a display only. All you have to do is ask a competent employee to do it. It is legal, it is legitimate.
I've been around a number of G5 towers running 30" Cinema Displays, as I work at a retail store. The G5s only make any noise that is audible above a slight whisper when they are churning data really hard.... or are defective. It is not unheard of for a G5 to have a bad midplane. This guy aparently didn't have the sense to bring his $9000+ setup back to an Apple Store and have the Geniuses say "Yup... that's noisy" and fix it. That said... he is clearly not aware of the giant performance hit his "silent" PC is from his G5. Oh well. Feels like another under-appreciated waste of power.
Your laptops should have been replaced quickly. They weren't. So call a higher-up and complain. I happen to know how these things work. You complain to every single person in the store until someone makes it happen.
However; you're probably a dickhead. And if you are, I can easily understand why they'd put you through hell. Bad luck falls on some people, and Apple tries to be expedient with requests for new hardware, but you're not the only one, so be patient.
As far as you choosing XP for a computing environment for your boss rather than OS X.... you're a fucking moron and you know it. That's not Apple's fault. Own your own shit. That's why you run Apple in the first place.
But what do I know? I'm just one of the top guys in my region.
If only you'd open your eyes you would find that you are completely wrong. People are the problem. But the true problem is who these people are and what they do.
Microsoft is the beginning: They have shitty code that can be taken advantage of. Much like GM making cars that have bad chassis... you can't do anything to patch the problem other than literally tearing the car apart and re-strengthening the chassis. Ideally they'd make a good chassis.
Virus-writers are the middleman: They realize the code is shitty and take advantage of it, motivation aside. Much like some jackass placing potholes in the road that you can run over and bend the chassis to your GM vehicle and eventually break it.
Users are at the end of the chain: They buy what they're told (for the most part) and some do their best to keep the computer free of viruses and spyware and avoid using the dark sides of the internet. Much like avoiding potholes and trying in vain to make the car stronger by applying braces to the frame. It will help, but ultimately you're still driving a car with a weak chassis.
What's the solution to this problem? Well, there's one simple way to fix this issue: Don't use shitty software. If there's CONSTANT alerts and warnings on the net and on the local news and papers about such-and-such software being vulnerable to such a large number of security threats, then don't buy it and don't use it.
People like you make my stomach turn. You think that the other OSes are just as vulnerable because you don't know the first thing about why Windows is not secure. Get your head out of your ass. Yeah, the other OSes have their problems, but it's really easy to break something that is already damaged than to break something that is built to take a beating.
I know for a fact that Ion Storm produced code for more than 60 hours a week for a number of months. My uncle, Todd Porter, had contributed a lot to the coding, and he and the other three (Romero and so on) would suicide-code many times just to get the games tweaked the way they wanted them. It caused family problems sometimes...
In fact, I live so close I can feel the ripples of hatred from the office buildings. Oh, that's just the INSANE AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC AT 5 P.M.
Seriously, I can't throw a ball in the air without 37 people from Best Buy telling me that I throw like a girl.
37!
Ever seen the headquarters? It's enormous.
My brother worked for Best Buy and said they were working on whole stores devoted to "Jill" and "Buzz" and whatever. Then I met an ex-marketing exec. at the Apple Store that confirmed that that was happening.
The movie was able to jerk emotions out of me much more than expected. I come from a divorced family and there's lots of kids. I somehow had a weak spot for this and it shows when I watch it. Very Very VERY well made. Gotta love Pixar. Don't know what I think about Cars yet. Looks kinda goofy and stupid. But Incredibles' trailers didn't give anything away about the content of the movie either....
You live under a rock? Apple's market share is crawling back up fast.
And I'm sure there's plenty of third-party products google would love to let advertise to all of the iPod-bearing %70 of all MP3 player owners that also are usually a bit more internet savvy than the average drip of water.
You should keep better tabs on the tech world if you think Apple is a mere streak on the window.
Yes, I fully understand the sweet job I have. Even on my worst days I just get through it and we as a team pick each other back up and have a good time.
I have had my fair share of bad IT jobs. I worked as a PC tech for the sheer experience for about 3 years and was making less than $500 a month.
Apple's salespeople are not paid comission rates. They are paid hourly. This provides every customer with the experience of a happy, but not vicious, buying/browsing experience.
They purposefully don't pressure customers due to the fact that they know that most people (especially switchers) want to gather information for themselves most of the time. If customers have questions, Apple's employees are more than happy to accomodate them so long as they aren't prodding for information on future products or services. Even if we knew we couldn't tell you without probably loosing our jobs.
That said... Sony will crash and burn. Great style.. sometimes... just not as attractive and awe-inspiring as Apple's stores are.
All Apple Stores have a discount "bin". They are timed for release at the end of every month usually. These are called fire sales because they are hot items. I don't understand the naming conventions... I just work there.
I was doing this years ago with my old Handspring Visor Deluxe (8MB... woohoo!) using some kind of remote control "learning" program. Basically... you held the palm's IR sensor near the remote's sensor, tell the palm to record the button press... and then hit the button on the remote. I had a script on my palm to go through many different remote patterns and even timed it so I could walk away from the TV and piss off grandpa without being in the blast radius.
That's also why Apache web servers on *nix are so subject to attack and have so many holes. Because, you know... it's the majority of all web servers.
Wrong.
Microsoft's OS and most of it's accompanying software is attacked and virus-ridden because it's a big smelly piece of shit. Not because it's the most common.
Of course, it's also the most virus ridden because many of the virus writers DON'T LIKE MICROSOFT BECAUSE THEY KNOW IT IS SHIT SOFTWARE!
You know guys... you wouldn't have jobs figuring out shit like: "I need a solution to out Company X Spyware/Adware/Virus problems." if you all had Macs. Or even Linux of one variant or the other. I'm just saying that you all should be glad you still have stuck-up and ignorant/arrogant bosses that are still brain-fried into thinking that Windows is the answer.
Folks create irritating things like spyware because there's a market for it because MS allows holes to exist.
I personally don't let any of my computers cater to advertisements short of banner ads.
Corporations need to see that there is a huge amount of gain to be had from NOT running windows on every fucking workstation from here to the server closet. The amount of money and time saved would blow most CEOs away.
Computers are not the problem at all. It's Microsoft.
Having dealt with Dell directly on a couple of occasions, they're really bad about support. Aside from that, everybody that knows that will keep from calling just to avoid a native Indian (the country) from telling then to fuck with their registry and whatnot.
The nice thing is, it's not Dell's problem.
it's Microsoft's.
We/.ers should know that it doesn't really matter the make or model of PC... if it's running Windows and you're on the internet, you're vulnerable. And if you're a curious mother fucker(P2P, Banner Ads, pr0n) you're just comitting your PC to a spyware-y death.
My girlfriend's mother is insane. Clinically. She was spending some time in a mental hospital (still does) and was meeting new people aparently. Anyways, girlfriends' mom met a man that exclaimed to her: "I am the Illustrator for Dungeons and Dragons!". She isn't real intelligent, so just said: "Oh. Can you draw me something?".
He drew the most amazing dragon-ette (looks like a butterfly and dragon met at a bar one night...) anyways... it's absolutely incredible. He aparently drew the entire thing easily and quickly and just gave it to her.
So I am the proud co-owner of an original piece of undocumented art from the artist and illustrator of D&D. I'll try to scan it on my Dad's G5 tonight and post it to my.Mac account.
I understand they're using this as a way to lever a better price from M$, but look at it Apple's way:
Apple would REALLY love to show off a 70,000 Mac install at one of the largest Telecoms in the country. They would probably give you a far better deal.
Not that I would know.... or anything. *Looks left and right for Steve*

Oh yeah...

OS X won't get hacked in any big way. And even Microsoft hasn't been sued for engineering negligence, let alone Apple.
Do you really think these companies are afraid of you?
Do you realize that the OS you run on your server is a direct relative to OS X?
If only you'd open your eyes you would find that you are completely wrong. People are the problem. But the true problem is who these people are and what they do.

Just my 3 cents.
You insensitive clod!

It's funny they say you need 10.3.6... because it doesn't exist yet.
Nice thing is, this means the iMac G5 can play Doom 3.

Screw that. If it doesn't readily work on OS X or through X11... I'm out.
Here's another mirror in case the others go...
