  1. Business freemium? You be damned! on Why the Freemium Business Model Isn't What It Used To Be · · Score: 2

I cannot see how easy a freemium environment works inside the business space. Is it something like the difference between Visual Studio Express ( (1) freemium) and Visual Studio (premium)? Or between Windows Starter and Windows Pro? If you need a specific feature - and most of the time you need that specific thing in the higher tier license - you just go for the premium version. If you do not realize you need the premium version at the beginning, then both vendor and you are in a bad position. If you are going to change software, you might also consider at this stage alternatives. Then you will get remorse due to the time you spent with this half-arsed version of the tool.
At the end of the day, we are talking about the business world, and not a consumer one. If freemium is so prevalent in the consumer mobile space is because applications can get revenue from advertising. You better not show unrelated adverts to a business client.
Note 1: Large business should not use Visual Studio Community due to licensing.

  2. HW support on HEVC Advance Announces H.265 Royalty Rates, Raises Some Hackles · · Score: 2

From what I gather, H264 and H265 may be supported by hardware (HW) today, and their HW decoders can be pretty efficient on portable devices. If you look at recent Apple devices, their main chips do support both decoding and encoding of both video formats. VP9 HW support is championed by Google, as far as I can see from an advert / white paper on www.deepchip.com . I assume Google will try to make all Android phones VP9 friendly, but I am not so sure what is the status right now. I suppose that VP9 is probably used by YouTube when you use Chrome as a web browser.

We have been given EPG for years now, and the broadcasters still cannot match their internal timetable to the EPG listings. I am not sure if it is malice or incopetence this time.

Apart from that, I had to remote login to some Solaris 5.8 machines with SPARC CPUs due to availability of software. There are simply no new versions of the software for this given cheap to run machine. I am not sure if I prefer C on an outdated Solaris box, or the new but outdated MS Excel + VBA 6 solution that new machines use.

I have been doing my job on GNU/Linux for almost 10 years. Surely I have not been using the latest OS, but that is something I do not mind in most cases. After all, it is the software that sets which version of RHEL you must use. Otherwise, you lose the vendor support.
My main gripe is that most users are given a laptop in order to use the latest and greatest from Microsoft: Office, SharePoint, Lync/Skype for business, Project. I hate laptops for work. They are expensive, generally slower, takes space from the desk... The only thing I can think of is that laptops consume less power.

Unless there is so much cruft in there that cleaning up seems like a good thing to do. MS Office has a lot of technology in there, and is usually the showcase of any embedding of one application into another. Now, the usecases for that are minimal. OK, I know of an ATE (Automated Test Equipment) that uses MS Office 2003 + Visual Basic 6 as the means to test chips. As with any legacy code, you cannot update the version of Office in that machine because it breaks the purpose of the Windows machine after all. What I was talking about? Get off my lawn!

So, the less popular a language is, the lower number of accessible frameworks you will have. As such, please scale down your goals accordingly. You do not want to reinvent the wheel again, unless you are only focused on the wheel.
