Just like any other product, weather a car or tape player, you don't expect to have to rebuild them just because the brand of Fuzzy Dice(tm), copy of Michel Bolton is used on them. If consumers could rely on the computer to always work than programers could expand out to offer Cool Apps. and other nifty embellishments. 15. Re:See...... on Bridging Unix and Windows At NASA · · Score: 0

Actually being a Rocket Scientist does not help in understanding Linux. The biggest problem non computer users have with all Operating Systems is the Idiots that write the Manuals. Almost always Manuals explain the simple terms but leave out definitions that the Author feels is common Knowledge. Lets take the what should be simple act of getting your hardware to work. Most OS'es have an installation program therefore the Manual assumes the operator does not have to do anything to make his computer work. When the computer does'nt work, the manual does not step by step spell out what to do, but rather immediatly assumes that operator can find and program a solution. Which pisses off the Person who is trying to learn how to use the Dam-Blasted Gadget. I wish that computer people would learn to hire non technical people to write Manuals and Help files. I swere the next time I go to the Help section and it contains a stupid statement such as "a modem is used to connect you to the Internet." rather than how to fix a modem related problem, I will hunt down the Author and dis-enbowel Him/her/whatever.

It is readily apparent that most of the posters on this subject were in school decades after myself. In my high school my math class was taught to use a slide rule, the first TI Calc had just been marketed and all it could do was add, sutract, divide and multiply.
In latter years in Naval Nuclear Power School we were allowed to use scientific calculators so long as they could not store data (move up to HP-15C).
Having just recently been through a certification course from my state, one fact became apparent. Those younger guys in the class were unable to do simple math even with calculators. It seems schools no longer teach fundamentals, that is anything more than plug and chug. Most of them couldn't understand Algebraic manipulation of a standard equation. Certainly there are bright individuals today that can do math, but what is truly sad is most people under the age of 30 can not.
I still have the HP and it still runs on the original batteries from 1985
