Your point may be valid, but your analogy in unfair as it compresses and simplifies history.
Photoshop was the end of a long progression of GUI-oriented drawing apps. It did not spring full-born from Adobe's skull.
MacPaint introduced pixel-based drawing: a first and proof of concept which validated the GUI as a advancement in user interface.
MacDraw (from a third-party?) introduced vector based graphics a year later.
A whole slew of third party pixel editors ensued, with Digital Darkroom being the best, until Adobe introduced Photoshop, which has led the niche ever since. Photoshop was released in 1990, *SIX years* after the Mac.
My point is that without MacPaint, Photoshop could not have happened. When MacPaint was written, the SDK for Mac was version 1.0 or may not have even been available. CodeWarrior saved Apple's bacon by providing a *compiler*, which Apple could not initially provide on its own. Photoshop came way later.
The product ain't even shipping yet. I think this impatience for a SDK bodes well for the interest and success of iPhone.
My question is, why are the troops supporting this government? If anyone, anyone has the power to put an end to all of this, it is they. Why hasn't the military staged a coup d'état? Why haven't the troops themselves simply said "enough is enough?"
The coup d'etat already occurred in 2000/4 with ballot rigging, the blessings the Supreme Court and was televised.
November was a minor setback. If something is not immediately done to remove electronic voting systems by the next election, golly golly the Republicans will stage an unexpected, unlikely and overwhleming landside re-taking of power.
The democrats still seem to think this is a gentleman's game, but their mistake is to ignore the many times the neo-cons have used any methods available to achieve their ends, after all they are on a higher mission, and a few eggs must get cracked to make the omelete of jingoistic patriotic soundbites with a tasty filling of fascism.
Recall that hitler was elected. Like a corporation, the neo-cons will continue with a new faceman in a new election, and continue to coalesce power by any means necessary. Sad thing is McCain seems eager to be their butt-boy. Others await in line. The end result will be the same. The neo-cons are a junta.
I hope the future proves me wrong, but I think my fears are realistic based on past performance.
There will be no laughter, except the laugh of triumph over a defeated enemy. There will be no art, no literature, no science. When we are omnipotent we shall have no more need of science. There will be no distinction between beauty and ugliness. There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always -- do not forget this, Winston -- always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face -- for ever.'
Perhaps what we really need here is a gag order on bloggers posing as journalists.
The amount of misinformation spewed by domain-illiterate journalists is bad enough. Journalists are supposed to be trained to convey information to the public. Their profession has devolved into methods for creating controversy in order to grab attention and headlines.
I scoffed when popular media last year claimed that blogging is the future of journalism. Yes, we can look forward to a future of even less trained loud mouths spouting personal opinions in place of fact. Ironicly, this is what the blogger in this case is doing while accusing meterologists of the same.
* Facts are not subjective * Opinions are for editorial pages, news stories should just convey the facts * There are not always two equally valid sides to a story * News has become infotainment and has undermined the informed electorate, which underpins stable domocracies
Since this case was settled, it doesn't mean anything. It just means Creative was willing to drop the lawsuit for $100 million.
No. It means that if I do not have $100 million, I can be steamrolled into oblivion by big corporations.
Do not mistake the patent system for anything other than what it has evolved ot become: a legal means of extortion which has raised the barriers to entry into most tech markets.
If you do not have a patent portfolio to exchange or deep pockets to license or litigate, you cannot participate in the market.
This is just another example of Big Fish agreeing not to eat each other.
Funny thing is how skeptical some people are, but only towards other 'opinions', ie. the *facts*.
I have family who seem permenantly stuck with the following untruths: * that Bush is a wise, capable leader maligned by liberal haters of freedom * that Microsoft is an innovator, maligned by competitors for its success * that God personally blesses them, and bad things only happen to sinners * that we orginate from a twinkle in god's eye, despite insurmountable evidence for evolution * that they are successfully due to just their hard work, not the advantages provided by their economic class and luck
Facts be damned. In many cases it seems that many people have lost their ability to be RATIONALLY skeptical and to consider alternate view points. That's why you'll see sane people change their mind: disasterous in politics, or say they see some value or truth in an alternate viewpoint: the wiggle room exploited by the ones who see this as weakness to be exploited to promote their dogma.
I tell 'ya, it seems all ye olde battles of rational thought are being re-fought. If OnStar didn't depend on satellites, they'd be idiots demanding the flat earth theory be given as much class time as the heliocentric theory. Facts are no longer facts, but strong beliefs to be swayed.
No, starting a company requires *clients* who want what you have to offer.
If you don't have cash flow, you have nothing but debt and all the desks, offices, computers and balls won't get you clients.
You can work from your home, start a business in the garage or local wifi-enabled coffee shop. Skills, professionalism, and paying clients are all that matters.
I guess I would be excited by this if I were using Windows instead of OSX, which *already*has*all*this* and works very well.
I now have a new concern: SMB v2.0 and removal of Macintosh services were mentioned. Seems that Vista is going to be a file sharing island once again, which will stall any adoption at sites I manage. If it can't cross-platform network, we can't use it.
I see this floundering and delays as a good thing. Finally the IT sector may have the MS Monkey off its back as MS digs its own grave. Couldn't happen to a more deserved company.
Great. All porn goes to.xxx, but let's not stop there.
How about the military is required to use.mil? Educational institutions are required to use.edu? ISPs required to use.net? Businesses required to use.com? Groups and organizations required to use.org?
When TLD naming restrictions were abandoned (in 1992?) they became meaningless. If I recall correctly, there was a moderator who had to approve your name request for TLD assignments. Then the dot.com boom came, "professional" oversight ensued, they started charging fees and all TLDs became fair game to the first who ponied the cash.
I've breifly search wikipedia, but haven't found this recorded anywhere. If someone is more knowledgeable about this (I was a noob then), it might make a good sidebar to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top-level_domain
So, after they re-close this barn door, how about we reform telephone area codes? 800 and 877 are toll free? Wait, I thought 1+ meant "long distance" or charges apply? Errr...not always?! How fraking intuitive!
I am amazed that Apple still has not released a PVR solution. I'd ditch my ReplayTV in a heartbeat for an Apple PVR with 30-sec skip button that can access my server-based iTunes collection. They are sidestepping the real living room market.
A rule of thumb I've learned is that if your planning for stuff that occurs more then 2 standard deviations away from the mean, then chances are you want something that is (or can at least be considered virtually) full-proof.
200 is full-proof, without much flavor, but can certainly handle two or more deviations.
Prove it.
You cannot prove religious dogma.
Science, by definition, is testable and independently verifiable. Just because science does not know everything does not mean that religion has any proven or provable basis.
Religion is by definition accepted by faith, and is therefore as irrational as an adult believing in Santa Claus. I would call that "rediculous".
Grow up.

So I guess we have to accept people-of-faith just like homosexuals:
because they were born that way ?
But re: the Fundies: You cannot tolerate intolerance and hope to remain free.

This is pre-911 thinking and it will get us killed!

I'm sure this will give that old classic more "modern appeal".

Only exceptions in all of movie history IMHO:
Aliens, the sequel to Alien
and
Terminator 2
instead of some stupid rehash of the original (ie Return of the Jedi), they take the story in new and interesting directions.
Alas, they did not have the talent to make Aliens 3 or T3 worthwhile.
Seems "hamsters" might be more approriate.
That's interesting. At my HS they turned out to be preachers.

I *still* hold some of that crap.
What I'm wondering is they claimed to hold a zillion patents on holographic storage technology... so what happened to those?
Maybe there's still a chance I can double my money?
