I didn't even pay for the game - my brother-in-law bought it and then lent it to me. I finished the game, with both characters, in less than 13 hours.

It was just dull. I actually got bored playing the thing. If I hadn't been home sick with pneumonia, I may have never finished it.

I must admit - I've never played Outpost or Daikatana, so I can't compare ETM to those. But the game blew and the bugs were annoying - I got stuck in walls, enemies would float in mid-air after I killed them, aiming was a joke (how many of you saw people shoot at you when they were pointing in another direction? Agent Smith and the cops did that to me all over the place), the AI was poor - I would stand right in front of a security guard and he wouldn't see me...things like that.

Again, I hate to beat a dead horse, but there has been nothing from Rare (save GoldenEye and Conker's Bad Fur Day) to merit such praise of those developers. Other than those two games (and Conker wouldn't have been as satirically impressive if it wasn't on the "kid console" N64), they're middle-of-the-road and rather mediocre.

...that has to be the worst game I've played. I'm sure there are worse out there, but of the ones I've played, ETM takes the #1 prize. Horrid little piece of crap.

The one I love to hate, however, is the Atari 2600 E.T.. It has nothing to do with the movie, it isn't all that fun any more...but, damn, I loved it as a kid. I really enjoyed that game - and I still have it. And haven't forgotten how to play it.

Unlike ETM, which I'm already blocking from my memory.

I wonder where those books wandered to...they might still be in my mother's basement. What were their names? I seem to remember that you were a member of an international crimefighting agency called "ASCII" or something like that...maybe that was a different book, but I don't think so.

Actually, an emulator wouldn't be a bad idea. The idea is for wannabe programmers to learn how to program games. It makes sense to start with something small. I know I would prefer to learn how to code something like Mario Bros. before trying to tackle something on the level of Soul Calibur II.

But, I'm not a programmer, nor do I want to be, so the XGameStation itself is something I find interesting, but not something I need. But the games are another story - I would love to play some of the games, I'm sure. I think that free emulators may be something that the developers want to think of between now and releasing the box. Then, they could sell, for a buck or two, the ROMs for developed games...I would give it a shot.

Do you know how the Federal budget works? Do you realize you are talking out of your ass? The "military" doesn't just get a pool of money to toss wherever. A specific area has to have its own buget, and then that goes further up, etc., to the departmental (Department of the Navy, for example) budget. The Pentagon, the Department of Defense, then takes all of the military budgets, plus their departments in the Pentagon itself, and has to hand that request to the President. The President then proposes his budget to Congress, and then Congress decides what it will fund.

    That's it in a nutshell.

As for the supposed "War on Terrorism:" We're talking a small segment of the Navy - a segment that has almost nothing to do with fighting terrorism (I didn't see any subs fighting in Iraq, did you?). Subs are traditionally not well budgeted for (in fact, the Navy is traditionally screwed when it comes to budget requests). Once the budget is in place, the Navy has to try and keep to it because of the fact that there are hurdles and hoops they have to run through to move money around (it isn't as easy as you might think).

Therefore, yes, the Navy, and portions thereof, is going to pay attention to their budget. Stop assuming that someone just needs to wave their hands and the thing is done - it just don't work that way.

Wait...Rare means "inconsistent flow." There just isn't an emphasis with them to get games out on time. Let's look at some of Rare's chestnuts, shall we?

    1) Conker: Live and Uncut - The first Rare game for the Xbox is going to be an port of the N64's "Bad Fur Day" with Xbox Live multiplayer thrown in. My question is: if this is a port, why hasn't it come out yet?

    2) Starfox Adventures - The last Rare game for Nintendo and the only one for the GC. I bought it used and I've gone about an hour into it. It just isn't compelling. So it's now sitting on my shelf waiting for me to become bored enough to play it - and I've been home for three weeks with pneumonia!

    3) Conker's Bad Fur Day - Rare's last game for the N64, and probably the best. It's underrated, it's fun and enjoyable. Multiplayer, akin to GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, too! But it has cute characters, and we all know that cute characters must mean that it's a kids game, even though it's rated "M." Because of that, I persoanally think Conker belongs on a "kids" console (Xbox players won't be interested - I think they don't understand satire).

    4) Perfect Dark - Not bad, but not great. Maybe it was on the wrong platform, but it just didn't impress me past the "This is like GoldenEye" feelings...

    5) GoldenEye - How many years has it been since it came out? Six? Come on - a six-year-old game does not a major developer make.

Rare is mediocre - period. Stop dreaming about GoldenEye - it ain't 1997 any longer and the gaming world has changed. Rare has to stop resting on its laurels and do something new...but that may not happen until Perfect Dark Zero comes out in...whenever.

The truth is, Nintendo was divesting itself from Rare - that's why MS was able to buy them. Rare just isn't worth the money. Let MS have 'em.

    :)

The long, pointy things are lasers. And, yes, for some reason the s-foils (the four "wings;" that's right - the X-Wing had s-foil wings...it's in the movie) had some sort of practical function. The foils need to be open to use the lasers, but closed for the ship to move through hyperspace. Staying with the lasers for a moment: Unlike the 1977 Kenner toy, I do not believe that the nose of the X-Wing had a laser in it (I don't recall anything ever shooting out of it...).

But, you are right - the wings are just there for familiarity - they don't seem to serve any type of lift since the X-Wing, etc., have "repulsorlifts" to take the ship up vertically and without the need of a runway...

Actually, now that I think about it, the Naboo fighters from TPM are definitely an example of a flighter that needs its wings (since they take off horizontally).
