    booting off some sort of "live cd" would pretty much kill
    off non-gaming tasks.

    they are accountable to who pays.
    you buy a service directly, you get accountability,
    you use a "free" advertising-supported service, the advertisers
    get accountability.

    really not too difficult to comprehend is it?

    actually, think about water drainage logistics. especially when a
    nice gulf hurricane flies over. probably get impressive walls of
    high speed water through drainage systems.
    make a tourist attraction out of it. :)

    rush hour? i thought the whole point of this project was to avoid
    urban centers...

    hopefully entrance/exit opportunities would be SEVERELY limited, or
    the whole thing will be a waste of time as cities grow like fungus
    around it.

    i already have been making a habit of downloading executables and
    md5 summs from DIFFERENT mirror sites when multiple sites are
    available.

    not sure it really improves security, but it gives me a warm fuzzy
    feeling... oh wait, that's my bladder again

    china could possibly have a ton of legacy DOS apps that people use.
    they are, after all, not used to high end, high-memory windbloats
    machines in every household.

    two sockets == two noisy fans
    1 socket (dual core) = one noisy fan.

    smp scaling without the noisy fan scaling is a good thing!

    the University of Waterloo had a similar concept
    with something called "suw"

    basically a su command that allowed authorized individuals to have
    their own root password. the root login account
    itself had unusable password.

    each authorized users suw password was of course kept in
    a "data store" (a private passwd style file)
    and logging of its usage was done to provide an audit
    trail.

    this is at least 16 or more years old.

    the excuse is that if the shuttle is damaged, it wouldnt
    be able to get to the ISS which is in an entirely different orbit?
    presumably a fuel issue?

    so they want to waste money researching and perhaps building
    an untested robotic system, and then *launch that*.

    couldn't they devise a method for using a soyuz to propel
    a shuttle to the ISS. then launch at same time (or have ready
    to launch) a soyuz? (or if the soyuz has the room, simply
    take the shuttle astronuats home directly.)

    surely paying the russians for a soyuz launch is cheaper
    than a robotic development program that probably wont
    do as well as human repairmen? and infusing money into
    the russian space program may not be such a bad idea anyway.

    oh wait, cant have other countries helping, that would be
    just plain un-american. much less embarassing to abandon
    useful technology.

    oh well.

    can someone be blamed for doing a denial of service
    to a site that Does Not Exist ?

    how about some scripts to pump out requests to a fairly
    limited set of known to be Non-Existent domains...

    could this possibly cause an interesting burden on Verishit's servers?

    would the name lookups themselves affect DNS too badly to
    cause innocent collateral damage? i'd hope caching of a limited
    set of non-existent names would avoid much dns load.

    just curious, academic musing and all that...
