There has been lots of hype about the incredible productivity boosts that Rails gives developers. Railsroad.com is going to detail my experiences learning Rails and Ruby.

Unlike some of the Rails blogs written by self-professed Ruby newbies. I'm a real newbie! I'm not coming from a background of 5 years developing web applications in Java.

I programmed games in Basic in the early 1980's, BUT I stopped programming when I started dating, so I'm a real newbie.

It seems that all the intelligent people I've met understand the the War on Drugs is a total snipe hunt.

As long as their is demand, there will be a market.

The fundemental question seems to be:
Is the government trying to punish marijuana smokers or educate them?

More than 60% of all drug incarcerations are for non-violent possesion of marijuana.

As a rational individual, it seems obvioius that their current tactics only succeed in punishing marijuana smokers. Actual use of marijuana is at the same levels or higher than it has ever been so as a preventive, prohibition has most definitely failed. The supply of marijuana is greater than ever and the potency is higher too. The DEA says this to scare the uninformed. They attempt to create the analogy that stronger means greater threat. In reality, stronger means that pot heads have to consume less marijuana to get high. So in reality, higher potency means healthier pot smokers. Who do you believe the DEA with their vested interest in maintaining the status quo or an independent organization of scientists and medical researchers, the esteemed World Health Organization. http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/hemp/general/w ho-index.htm

If anything prohibition has made the problem worse. Prohibition tends to create a black market which opens the door for large scale criminal organizations. Examples of these are the Mafia ( very small organization until their massive growth thanks to alcohol prohibition), the Latin & South American drug cartels in the '80's, and of course the DEA.
    http://www.prohibitioncosts.org/
    http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa-157.html

In fact the only voices that seem to be raised against the legalization of marijuana are those of the DEA and the penal system. That's only natural, without them maintaining their lies, their free ride is over. Even the politicians are afraid of the power of the DEA. Apparently the DEA thinks they don't have to obey the Constitution.

  6. The Ideal Hybrid Car - Bio-Diesel on New York Taxis Will Go Hybrid · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've thought about this and I think that the idea hybrid car would have the following features.

    -Reasonable price
    -diesel powered

    Why?
Well diesel engines only require slight modification to run biodiesel. Biodiesel is a net zero gain carbon fuel.

By this I mean that it's produced from organic crops so the carbon released is mearly absorbed by the next generation of fuel still in the fields.

The USA currently pays farmers $30 billion dollars to not grow crops. Why not pay them to grow Rape Seed and Soy so that the country can create an abundance of Bio-Diesel fuel.

The side advantage is that once the USA became less dependant on the oil of the middle east we would not have to be involved in middle east politics. Without our oil money the middle east would lose it's entire power base.

If we were really smart we would create a Hybrid car that used a sterling engine which is about 2x as effecient as internal combustion engines at extracting fuel power.
Sterling engines are what power nuclear subs. They only problem with Sterling Engines are that they tag 5 min or so to heat up and get miximum efficiency. With a hybrid car this is a moot problem because you can operate on battery power for the first 5 minutes.

  9. Why use an internal combustion engine? on Hybrid Drivers Provide Real-World Mileage Data · · Score: 1

One thing that I don't understand is why the car manufacturers are using the internal combustion engine.

If they are developing a new technology, especially one that is intended to be more efficient, why not pick the most efficient technologies?

The sterling engine, which has been around since last century is reliable enough for our nuclear plants, why not in a car.

A sterling engine is way more efficient at extracting energy from it's fuel source. 50%+ vs. 30% or so for internal combustion )

The biggest challenge with the sterling engine was the time require for it to reach optimal operating temperatures. ( ~ 5 min )

With a hybrid car this is a non issue because you can use electric power while the engine is warming up.

    These people are the company.
They may not own it on paper, however without these charismatic people there is no company, or rather there is just a shell of a company.

This is part of a new shift in the economy that was primed by computers and automation. Busines is becoming less and less capital intensive so the purpose of the stock market is waning.

From 1840 - 1980's, business was based on capital. You had to have a lot of money to create the production capacity. The capital markets were need ed because it required $50 million to build a factory.

So the old way required floating paper as a means of funding the business.

Now, the stock market is being used as a means of making businesses Rich.

    An example is Google.
Google was already profitable before they went public. Google could have easily grown by reinvesting their profits.

That's a slow process that definitely VC firms do not like. So they force companies to go public so the VC firm can recoop their investment.

The reason is simple, very few individuals in a company have any influence on the stock price at all.

For an incentive to increase performance requires direct feedback from your efforts. Without this feedback, the reward becomes a random bonus. This increases the cost of doing business without increasing performance.
