    My guess is that they:
    1.go public
    2. gets lots of cash
    3. Buy back company and privitize after price comes back down.

I also think that google is using the muscle to hopefully make some good changes to Wall Street.
Even when things were good in '97 and '98, Wall Street's actions always looked criminal to me.

Wall Street consistantly ended up giving companies going public only a fraction of the price that the company closed at after the first day of trading.
    Why is this a problem?
Well a company going public is essentially selling a % of their company to raise capital.
Let's say we have a company that we are willing to sell 20% to raise $20 million.
To do that, I have to sell 2 million shares at $10 a share.
If the stock closes at $20 at the end of the first day, as the IPO'd company we still only raised $20 million dollars.
If the I-bankers did their job correctly, we could have only sold 10% of the company and still raised the same amount of cash ( $20 million ). Instead, we were forced to sell 2x as much ownership of the company as we should have.

The investment banks pocketed all the additional money. The most common structure of an IPO is that the underwriters purchase all the stock from the IPO company and then sell it from their books as trading occurs.

As I understand it, the biggest task a IPO underwriter performs is evaluating what a share of a stock will trade for in the market. If you look at their historical accuracy of doing this, you'll see how poor a job they do at this.

Why does Wall Street still exist?

The reality is, they just want to create a rigid structure with them at the top.

How do they slip this past the public?
Easy, lawyers use overly complicated jargon the average person can't understand. Look at Nolo.com to see how clearly even complicated legal ideas can be expressed. The lawyers don't want to express their ideas clearly, that would remove one of their biggest power bases.

    I've installed:

Redhat 7.2 - this went pretty easy on my work pc, except I couldn't even boot the install disks on my home pc.
Mandrake 8.1 - wouldn't boot on my home PC- did install on work pc, but couldn't configure my laster jet printer due to some cryptic bug. I sent my cap file and hopefully they will figure it out, because I have not clue
FreeBSD - It was easy to install the OS, but configuring XFree86 has me comletely confused. I have gotten the GUI to render, but there are no buttons. But I can use the mouse to drag windows around create a really cool tracers :)

It's frustrating to want to do something that I believe in so much.( I even donate money to Mandrake, FreeBSD and several other projects ) Despite the fact that I know more about computers than 90% of the general public, I still haven't been able to get a "free" version of a OS to be fully functional on any of my computers.

Fortunately, I do have access to most of the software because I'm a OS X user too. I've configured my iBook to be able to use the FreeBSD
    ports.

Enough of my rant, but there are a few things that I think need to be done.

HP seems to dominate the Printer market. I think that getting All the HP printers to work by being able to click a button is critical for Linux to ever be a viable desktop option.( add in NEC and you've got 85% of the market )

The configuration of XFree86 needs to be simplified somehow. Mandrake and Redhat seemed to have done this and I'd love to see FreeBSD do this too.

Finally, someone needs to create a virus that somehow sets all infected PC's to default to .rtf
to purge themselves of those nasty .doc 's.

It would seem that a computer's best use would be to gather the best teaching methods and provide other teachers with new insights into how to best convey their teachings to the students.

Think about it, teaching many subjects involves creating metaphors that allow your audience to understand the message you are delivering. Almost all learning is associative, so if you have a large enough db of teaching metaphors, you can readily find the right message to deliver.

I'm a manager in a biotech company. I interact with several distinct groups. When I'm talking with programmers, I tend to be very precise with my message, I let them know what I need and make sure we understand what we are developing. OTOH, If I'm talking with one of our operators, I tend to talk about different things. I talk about the cases they've performed etc. because they are more concerned with the people/relationships.

IMO, a teacher's job is to provide the spark that bridges the gap and allows the fire of knowledge to grow within the student.
