I've read all the hype and I'm convinced that I want to learn Rails.
I'm documenting my experiences here: http://www.railsroad.com/typo/ is going to detail my experiences learning Rails and Ruby.
There has been lots of hype about the incredible productivity boosts that Rails gives developers. Railsroad.com is going to detail my experiences learning Rails and Ruby.
Unlike some of the Rails blogs written by self-professed Ruby newbies. I'm a real newbie! I'm not coming from a background of 5 years developing web applications in Java.
I programmed games in Basic in the early 1980's, BUT I stopped programming when I started dating, so I'm a real newbie.
I've learned a lot about what users want having created several popular sites. My hope is that Rails is the tool to help me draw my ideas into the real world.
I promise I'm going to share exactly what I think about Rails and Ruby. No Hype, no B.S.!
Plus, I think It'll be fun for experienced programmers to laught at my ignorance.
It seems that all the intelligent people I've met understand the the War on Drugs is a total snipe hunt.
As long as their is demand, there will be a market.
The fundemental question seems to be: Is the government trying to punish marijuana smokers or educate them?
More than 60% of all drug incarcerations are for non-violent possesion of marijuana.
As a rational individual, it seems obvioius that their current tactics only succeed in punishing marijuana smokers. Actual use of marijuana is at the same levels or higher than it has ever been so as a preventive, prohibition has most definitely failed. The supply of marijuana is greater than ever and the potency is higher too. The DEA says this to scare the uninformed. They attempt to create the analogy that stronger means greater threat. In reality, stronger means that pot heads have to consume less marijuana to get high. So in reality, higher potency means healthier pot smokers. Who do you believe the DEA with their vested interest in maintaining the status quo or an independent organization of scientists and medical researchers, the esteemed World Health Organization. http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/hemp/general/w ho-index.htm
If anything prohibition has made the problem worse. Prohibition tends to create a black market which opens the door for large scale criminal organizations. Examples of these are the Mafia ( very small organization until their massive growth thanks to alcohol prohibition), the Latin & South American drug cartels in the '80's, and of course the DEA. http://www.prohibitioncosts.org/ http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa-157.html
http://www.leap.cc/ is a really interesting website put together by former Law Enforcement Officers that have seen that the Drug Laws cause more harm than good.
My more people that know the truth, the better our society becomes.
Just because you like being sober doesn't mean you have to hate those that want to smoke pot.
One of the things that I like about LCD tv's is that they just keep coming up with new technology.
Sharp is also working on a glasses free 3-d LCD tv.
How cool will that be?
There is also an American startup working on 3-d LCD tv's altough I can't recall their name right now.
Read about new LCD technology at http://www.lcd-tv-reviews.com/
I've thought about this and I think that the idea hybrid car would have the following features.
-Reasonable price -diesel powered
Why? Well diesel engines only require slight modification to run biodiesel. Biodiesel is a net zero gain carbon fuel.
By this I mean that it's produced from organic crops so the carbon released is mearly absorbed by the next generation of fuel still in the fields.
The USA currently pays farmers $30 billion dollars to not grow crops. Why not pay them to grow Rape Seed and Soy so that the country can create an abundance of Bio-Diesel fuel.
The side advantage is that once the USA became less dependant on the oil of the middle east we would not have to be involved in middle east politics. Without our oil money the middle east would lose it's entire power base.
If we were really smart we would create a Hybrid car that used a sterling engine which is about 2x as effecient as internal combustion engines at extracting fuel power. Sterling engines are what power nuclear subs. They only problem with Sterling Engines are that they tag 5 min or so to heat up and get miximum efficiency. With a hybrid car this is a moot problem because you can operate on battery power for the first 5 minutes.
The TV stations are bidding there time until they think there are enough High Def tvs on the market to justify the very expensive switch.
Fortunately, at http://www.lcd-tv-reviews.com/ new LCD tv's are coming out all the time. The prices will keep coming down and the quality keeps getting better.
What I think might happen is that HD programming may tip with online viewership first.
We conducted a poll on the site a few months ago and many people were interested in a TV that could also function as their computer monitor. Sorta like a super webTV consule, but with a much better interface.
I understand that in Sweden quite a few people use their monitor as their TV and vice versa.
One of the biggest challenges so far is the chicken or the egg dilema.

There has been a new trend in the past 10 years or so of the celebrity CEO. Jobs Gates Michael Dell Jack Welch - when he was there Page and Brin
These people are the company. They may not own it on paper, however without these charismatic people there is no company, or rather there is just a shell of a company.
This is part of a new shift in the economy that was primed by computers and automation. Busines is becoming less and less capital intensive so the purpose of the stock market is waning.
From 1840 - 1980's, business was based on capital. You had to have a lot of money to create the production capacity. The capital markets were need ed because it required $50 million to build a factory.
So the old way required floating paper as a means of funding the business.
Now, the stock market is being used as a means of making businesses Rich.
An example is Google. Google was already profitable before they went public. Google could have easily grown by reinvesting their profits.
That's a slow process that definitely VC firms do not like. So they force companies to go public so the VC firm can recoop their investment.
However, this whole scheme is a house of cards. Think about it... What happens when Bill Gates and Balmer decide to retire? What happens to Apple when Jobs retires?

I've studied quite a bit of performance managment and the studies show that stock options do NOT increase performance of workers.
The reason is simple, very few individuals in a company have any influence on the stock price at all.
In order for an incentive to improve performance, the measured task must be within the contol of the worker.
For an incentive to increase performance requires direct feedback from your efforts. Without this feedback, the reward becomes a random bonus. This increases the cost of doing business without increasing performance.
Think about it like this:
How long would you play a video game if the controller in your hand did not control the game? Level of Consciousness Attractor Patterns in Human Behavior.

The digital tv interest remains high. The problem is that the $3000 is still a lot to pay for a tv, even if the picture is incredible.
There are several tv's including new Syntax Olivia tv is a good value. Dell also seems to be aggressively trying to drive price down. Coming OLED technology and the prices should be very reasonable in 3 years or so.
I have read elsewhere that bandwidth is growing at a faster rate than storage.
While the bandwidth used by the broadcast feed will be increased as the quality of the image improves, the limit is what people can use to render the image.
I.E. If you have a regular high definition tv, that is the best image you will be able to see.
You also run into diminishing returns. MP3 is not the quality of a wav file. However, the difference is small and most people are willing to get a little less quality for the convenience of the small file size.

This is a site could turn into something interesting eventually.
My big hope is that they begin making diesel hybrid cars soon. That way we can start using Biodiesel Alternative Fuels. I think it's time we stopped paying $14 billion to farmers to not grow crops. That's a lot of waste.

In fact the only voices that seem to be raised against the legalization of marijuana are those of the DEA and the penal system. That's only natural, without them maintaining their lies, their free ride is over. Even the politicians are afraid of the power of the DEA. Apparently the DEA thinks they don't have to obey the Constitution.

Customer Service has gotten atrocious.
I really think that Video is going to become more and more important over the next few years.
The tools are getting cheaper and easier to use.
I'm creating some reviews of the best cameras.
http://www.video-camera-reviews.com/
One thing that I don't understand is why the car manufacturers are using the internal combustion engine.
If they are developing a new technology, especially one that is intended to be more efficient, why not pick the most efficient technologies?
The sterling engine, which has been around since last century is reliable enough for our nuclear plants, why not in a car.
A sterling engine is way more efficient at extracting energy from it's fuel source. 50%+ vs. 30% or so for internal combustion )
The biggest challenge with the sterling engine was the time require for it to reach optimal operating temperatures. ( ~ 5 min )
With a hybrid car this is a non issue because you can use electric power while the engine is warming up.

You heard it here first.
Google IPO was unique in that the stock was issued in 2 classes.
Class 1 ( not the real name )
The class was held by the original investors and employees of the company.
Class 2
This was the stock that was offered in the Google IPO.
When is comes time for Shareholder to vote:
Class 1 stock votes count 10 times more than Class 2 stock.
That gives Brin and Page voting control of the company because unless they vote against each other, they will always win.
