Despite a few well run demos and some really cool eye candy AI is still basically just a room full of monkeys that can type very quickly. Better add more monkeys.
Any research or theory that is validated by the assumption that we could have any idea about the capabilities, motivations and actions of such advanced civilisations is naive, because it does not accept how naive we are given our level of scientific knowledge and how far beyond our current understanding of the universe that such an intelligence would be. And I do mean intelligence, singular, because that is an inevitable precursor to a singularity and whatever follows. If an advanced civilisation's computational resources operate using the patterns in the interaction of seas of virtual particles there would be no easily detectable entropy change from the computation itself, only the I/O may touch the sphere of physics that we have knowledge of, and even this is not necessary as the computation manipulation of what we see as the known universe may be as subtle as simply influencing the probability of outcomes at a quantum scale.
i.e. This study is the equivalent of a Victorian amateur scientist looking for grandfather clocks in the hope of proving that nuclear reactors exist on Mars.
Computers are mind amplifiers, and in this regard they are functioning as designed in schools.
The failure lies with those who were tasked to nurture the development of the minds.
If you don't start your offspring's literacy training by the age of two years old you risk missing the period of maximum brain plasticity and therefore permanently limiting their potential.
For all our legislated control over dogs we still can't stop some people from breeding and training really nasty ones who occasionally escape and bite the face off the nearest child (it has happened), so why should we believe that we can control the use of drones by people who know they are doing the wrong thing with them?
Furthermore mandating behavioural control rules for drones will kill the DIY autopilot market as it would only be legal to fly sealed and certified units.
This science is very relevant to Slashdotees given so many are IT people who could benefit from a greater understanding of the origins of Project Managers.
Advanced communicators just flip bits using entangled particle pairs in pre-shared sets. Imagine two identical SSD modules, you give one to your friend who travels around with it and whenever you write data to your copy your friend is able to read the same bit changes off their's. Nothing is transmitted, the link is instantaneous and totally secure. Why wouldn't an advanced civilisation not switch to such a system as soon as they can? So assuming humans are average in their technological development rate you have about a 100 year window where any new civilisation is exposing itself to detection via electromagnetic wave transmission. If you accept that what are the odds of finding anything now? Bugger all?
Did Leonardo Da Vinci ever produce any art that was irrational and subjective? No he didn't. Beauty is not subjective either because aesthetics is measured relative to a cultural frame of reference, it isn't completely subjective.
They could be patches of frozen water or CO2 crystals that emerged from those areas as a vapour then mediately cooled to rain down around their point of origin. That would explain how they have a high albedo over such a wide range of viewing angles. Shiny shiny crystals. Once there is enough of them reflecting sunlight the surface cools enough to stop the outflow of vapour from whatever the original impact crater/s exposed.
The idea of compensation is idiotic because score settling works both ways, the major CO2 emitters have also got global science and technology to the point it is today and if you want to say you have no part in that then you have to give back your compensation if you live longer than your pre-industrial ancestors did, because you have access to knowledge or material goods generated from the source of the CO2 you are seeking compensation for.
Plus a bit of coding (literally) on the pulses, and given the new units will be so small more than one operating out of phase should allow for majority decisions that override a minority of jammed channels.
Not sure how affected Google is going to be given Ray already knows about this,
How can you fit more information into an event horizon than it can hold? Isn't an event horizon a given size, a 2D spherical surface, existing in a universe that is limited by the resolution of the Planck distance?
So how can I encode as much, about as many in-falling particles, as I like into it?
If Hawking does not explain that adequately his theory is nonsense.
Where he is going to find room to move to do this is a mystery, perhaps he will declare it to not be 2D after all and rather, a fractional dimension greater then 2 and less than 3? Perhaps this +2 dimensionality is a measure of the information it has already absorbed?
The translate option in G+ actually does a decent job of translating that sort of text. When I first noticed it I thought, LOL that is racist, then I realised that it is actually very useful.
600,000 pieces, or 6,000 or 6,000,000, it would depend on the size at which you stopped counting them surely?
The problem is a variation on the Coastline Paradox https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... except they are counting bits of stuff that actually exist at many scales right down to the microscopic.
I would have thought that the most meaningful measurement is kg of plastic per cubic meter of seawater in the range from the surface down to X meters.
Because you know, Science!
That is all it would take, a team of drones with the first one being a decoy that will damage the laser. Sorry Boeing but there is a smarter way of taking out drones, without projectiles or lasers.
If I have that much pressure in one place on the surface of a ball of liquid iron and rock with a thin crust (Earth) and I remove the force so rapidly the entire area rises upward and as it does the effects propagate to the rest of the globe changing the stresses on all of the fault lines.
i.e. Isn't the real problem that this will increase earthquakes and volcanic activity before the water level is a real problem?
The extra eruptions may actually be a good thing as the ash clouds will have a albedo increasing, therefore cooling, effect. To bad if you live near one, or in California.
It was either a foolish and naive idea to have such a system, or a deliberate plan by groups that saw it as an opportunity to increase their wealth.
The only thing that can be trusted to reduce emissions of CO2 is the invention of better technologies that are more profitable to run and distorting markets to make new technologies more profitable is not the way to do it.
The only solution is to invest in applied science and roll it out as fast as possible once it is proven viable. i.e. Fusion energy, because nothing else scales fast enough and works everywhere and all the time.
To get the full range of results you would need two sets of materials, a hard and a soft set. Each set would need Black, White, Clear, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Red Green and Blue. That is a total of eighteen, then add conductor and semiconductor for a total of twenty materials.
If I can share entangled states via an interconnect I can send a member of a pair to another location before I cause the state of it's twin to be resolved. This allows me to build a pair of quantum buffers, which gives you zero lag links and caches etc.

No you will need to wait until they upgrade it to 34 cores before you can do that.
Each automatically generated from the binary pattern of their Unicode value.

Fusion based in part on the ideas of the Australian Sir Mark Oliphant. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
