  1. Corrected link on Jack Valenti, Dead at 85 · · Score: 2, Interesting
  2. I disagree on Jack Valenti, Dead at 85 · · Score: 5, Insightful

While Jack was quite the luddite in his waning years, he was instrumental in replacing the movie industry's repressive http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Production_Code">Hays Code [no sex, nudity, excessive violence, etc.] with the less-evil MPAA classification system. He also opposed the "clean DVD" proposal which would've seen sanitised versions of films -- a dangerous idea, if there ever was one.

Not all of us are pure evil, and Jack has to be applauded for moving the industry in the right direction. I only hope his successor is a forward-thinking visionary.

Get either Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim discs. The latter is easily found [my favourite is the 16x DVD+R discs made by CMC -- look for the serif font used for OPEN <-> LOCK on the cakebox. Sans-serif indicates Prodisc.], but you can get Taiyo Yuden from:

  6. Re:No SD please, we're British on Barenaked USB Drive · · Score: 1

Camera write speed tests alway have SD working faster than MMC.

I suspect they may be deliberately crippling MMC to seed the SD market. Both SD and MMC share the same form factor and interface; logically, there is no reason why one should perform better than the other.

  7. No SD please, we're British on Barenaked USB Drive · · Score: 2, Informative

Perhaps some SD and other memory card-tricks will follow.

Secure Digital cards support the SDMI copy-protection spec (secure from you, not for you), thus opening "a Pandora's box of new marketing possibilities".

Stick to MMC (MultiMediaCard), which is essentially SD minus the copy-crippling mechanism.

Wall Street suggests in a recent Article that Apple is about to announce a deal with Google, to offer Apple's iTunes Music service through its site.

    That's MAJOR news indeed.

If it turns out to be right, it would be a great deal for both sides, as Apple will gain a wider audience for its music service iTunes through the enormous base of Google visitors, and Google too will at last have a music service to offer, like Yahoo did a while ago.
No need for Google to start its own Music Service, they'll have the best Music Service by their side, what could be better than that.

This is very exciting cooperation between two of the biggest and most influential companies in the Tech World, and it has never crossed my mind, until now.

    Let's wait and see.

Why can't they just advertise their service by saying "it's the ORGNINAL and EXACT reproduction of the artist's music" or something to that effect instead of just crushing the tab sites?

That's because they MAY NOT be original and exact reproductions.

There are a few Steve Vai and Joe Satriani tab books that state this disclaimer (in the foreword, not on the cover or would you buy it?) but considering the speed at which they play, it's almost forgivable...

You are way off base. Tab writers do not "hack" into the songwriter's secret archive, get exact note-by-note tabs and then post it to the net. They reverse-engineer the song through listening and figuring out what the notes are BY EAR.

By the way, you are aware that even tab publishers [Cherry Lane, et al] do not guarantee note-for-note accuracy?
