I know, there might be many places where it has been discussed before, but could someone please tell me if HT is only for threading or can it be used for precesses, too. And I know, they are essentially the same syscall under linux, and might be faster, b/c of synchronization issues wrt to the memory access IIRC...
in fact, I think QT6 would be MORE free than MPEG4.
For using the technology at least, as I don't know a patent is covering QT6.
for definition, and evolutions, of course it's another thing, but for the usage, QT seems less encumbered than MPEG4. You just need to find another FREE, efficient codec, and that is not an easy thing (besides theora).
Thus, it should be a mobile phone standard (and it is, if you count the hundreds of millions of GSM phones, which standards are being defined by the 3gpp group now)
Generally, I assume you have a right to code opensource not unless you look at a copyrighted source, but unless you sign the corresponding NDA. I fail to see how hundreds of millions of people will be regarded under NDA, just because someone in this country signed the NDA.
Do you trust your politicians ?

Politicizing Science

Of course, research has to be political, even many ppl here on slashdot won't agree.
By political, you mean for example the fact that some things are not agreeable to work on such as human cloning. And I think the budget decisions on how much money is granted to a research branch is political
The main question, here, is how much should it be politized and if you trust yourpoliticians.
The right way to fix the problem may not be to give them less power, but to have politicians you trust.
I am a European, but is the real question : do you trust Bush government on defining Science ? Would you trust Nader ?
A simple WHOIS shows that it's registered to some finnish dude. Why should we think anything on there is even credible (I mean did you even read it???)
Yes, but for good low latency audio you would need a well tuned harddrive, kernel (with appropriate low latency patches), inclusion of uptodate alsa (which will be mainstream in 2.6), and every program. I agree that these may be included as packages in an existing distro : that's exactly what he's doing, by basing his work on debian/red hat.
And btw, mandrake used to be just that, a redhat tailored for KDE usage.
Taco would like you to believe that MS only controls the Office market because of Windows. I guess that's why it's the most popular office suite for Macs too?
Ahem, YES. Because if 90% of desktops are PCs, when you're on a mac doing anything, you generally want to be able to open a word document.
So, windows monopoly -> word monopoly -> even on macs makes perfect sense for me.
except that Code is SOME form of data : either through a security hole or a kindof scripting function.
API access from untrusted code is maybe a more useful thing to be taken care about (read : animated gifs ARE code, but limited to... uh... displaying images at a certain time)
I'm so tired of having to decide which featureset I want to use today. For development I use Linux, because of the nice features like emacs/vi/gcc/perl. However I can't stand linux's tendency to map its own key accelerators onto my X applications, nor can I take it desktop switching mode, so for casual web browsing I restart in WinXP. This means that I've had to memorize two control panels, two ways of virtual desktop switching, etc. If there's anything that's important about the desktop metaphor it is that the metaphor must be intuitive. The problem with choice is that it requires you to gain knowledge in order to make an informed decision. To gain knowledge you have to spend time learning. When I pick up a lab instrument I don't want to spend time learning how to use it's desktop; I don't freaking care how it works. I want to use the instrument.
The Linux/WinXP choice is annoying. Honestly I don't care which one goes away, I just wish one of them would.
Trolltech and Sharp have announced a really spiffy-looking Linux palmtop, named "Zaurus". The device itself features a sliding (retractable) keyboard, a color display, a CF expansion slot (for memory or peripherals), an SD expansion slot (for secure memory storage or other peripherals), an IR port, a USB connector and a headset port. On the software side, the Zaurus uses Lineo's Embedix Linux; Trolltech's Qt/Embedded, Qt/Palmtop and Qt AWT GUI technologies; Insignia Solution's Jeode PDA Edition; and Opera Software's embedded web browser. Sharp is accepting pre-orders from the developer community for the SL-5000D developer unit (register here). With the continuing additions to kdenox, this might just be a great platform for KOffice/embedded.

Errr if uptime is really important, reboot should be rare. Thus, boot time might be long (see big UNIces), it doesn't mater if it takes 10 min. to boot if ypou reboot once a year.
Here, uptime is NOT important.
boot time is.

Sorry, but what's the difference between this and a random bytecode/assembly language ? What's the point if neither Python nor Perl implementation are alpha'ed, too ?
I mean, how could we know if this is adequate for a python bytecode for example ?
Why not use an existing (Scheme/Lisp/Java) bytecode then ?
Besides, I'd be very happy if we could have a somewhat open, Free, standard bytecode. But why (I know there's a because) can't we use something existing ?
a catchy subject, but just think that with the QtMozEmbed plugin (or anything like this), you just need a menu switch to drop KHTML (slow, buggy as hell, bloat beacuse C++,...) to gecko (fast, C, RMS blessed, cures headaches and . Yeah, right. I don't think it would be much different at all.

19 MBps ? Do really think that in a cell this capacity will _NOT_ be available for, say 100 people ?
.... not sure you'll have that !
Remember, 100 people x 20 MBps -> 4GHz band, thanks to shannon
yeah, 640 Mb ought to be enough for everybody !
