Oh, they were. Right up until that blackout where the only guy with the key to the diesel generator on the roof slept through the whole thing and the data center shut down.
Don't feel too bad, I worked for a company that punished employees for working overtime to get things out on time. They finally solved the problem by making all IT staff salary.
Bullshit. Let's place blame where blame is due. What screwed America is the unions. It quickly became cheaper to order from Canada than buy local, and that just opened the gateways. It became obvious it was non-profitable to work with Americans, because we're greedy and vindictive.
And don't even get me started on the BS they pulled w.r.t. time spent on the job vs. actual contribution. They advanced people for time served, and punished up and comers.
Not this isn't to say there aren't other issues involved, but the core problem is we let a mafia-like set of players step in and control our strongest companies, and the folks with the money got sick of it. The unions trained businesses to avoid local production by pricing our workforce right out of the market.
You can sit and bitch all you want, but that is what killed it for American jobs. Everyone wanted the best health care, they wanted automatic advancement, and just made themselves unappealing to the businessmen. There is a breaking point. And one look over the history of Detroit (which is just a more obvious example than most) shows exactly what happens when you let the unions take over. If that doesn't explain it, look at GE.
Once you stop building the stuff, you stifle engineering and improvement, and at this point, I don't see America pulling it out of their ass for anything. We were on top, and we blew it. Case closed.
Tucson, AZ spent something like 8 years reworking a road due to congestion, and when they were done, a beautiful new stretch of 2 lane was made (Aviation highway).
And they marked it at 35mph. It was 40 prior to the reconstruction. It's pretty much a straightaway, residential areas are completely blocked by huge walls, and yet, 35mph. 40mph is the norm in Tucson except residential.
This went on for almost 2 years. Until they ticketed a lawyer who decided to fight it. Turns out, they NEVER bothered to even consider it from an engineering perspective, they just slapped up a 35mph sign and started collecting revenue. Now it's 55, and the city had to return money to anyone they ticketed.
There might be rules, but don't think they get followed all the time.
On this page you'll find the following text just above the video:
Warning: This laser's brightness is potentially hazardous to pilots' vision and satellite sensors. NEVER point it at an aircraft or a satellite. The S3 Krypton is too powerful to be used as a laser pointer or a gunsight. Never point it at another person, an animal or a vehicle.
I have one. It'll pop a dark balloon in about 2 seconds. It will light a cigarette.
As for burning things, I pointed it at a piece of 3/4" oak plywood and left it there. After about 5 minutes, it had charred it about 1~2mm deep.
I expect it could have done more but it's not a very focused point. The actual "point" is about 1mm by 4mm at around 50cm. They have a lens kit which has a "Focusing Effect Lens", but I waited about 5 months before cancelling that order so no idea how well it works.
The more obvious issue with it is you can't really show it off to your friends. It comes with one pair of (not very good) glasses, and you really don't want to accidentally ruin someone's eyesight. I ordered 2 pairs of Laser Glasses from dragon lasers, but it's still generally too much of a pain to mess with very often.
There are only 2 real solutions if you want real long term storage. The first is you become Linus and just dump it on a server and let the rest of the world back it up, and the second is you make your data a religious text somehow. Because those guys with translate it for centuries to come, even if it means sitting 50 dudes in a room for 3 years with nothing but a feather, ink, and parchment.
The last time I went in for surgery I got somewhere along the lines of 11 bills after the fact, all with poor descriptions and from various entities. Some from the place where I had the initial review, some from where the surgery was done, some from the anesthesiologist, and some from a lab. It's freaking insane.
You know, back when Phil Zimmerman was under fire for PGP, we (the geek community) stepped up and used PGP for trivial messages, thereby lending it strength, and making it pointless to bother working to decrypt the messages.
And he WON.
Based on you getting a +5 for saying you want to bury your head in the sand, I'd say we're just throwing the battle. And I'd say you're a jackass.
Don't let the FUD take you down. They're just grunts who want a day off eating hot dogs with the family same as you. If they want to be assholes for a few bucks they won't even remember having earned in 6 months, let them waste their time. But make sure it's a waste of time. Make sure it's a HUGE waste of time. Because they're the ones we want to keep busy.
What
Could
Possibly
Go
Wrong.
I ALMOST feel bad posting the obvious, but.. whatever.
Who specifically? Because I have skill, and want out of the states.
Oh, they were. Right up until that blackout where the only guy with the key to the diesel generator on the roof slept through the whole thing and the data center shut down.
Bad times.

So it goes both ways.
There are lots of them around. Search ebay for "IBM Model M". And yes, you can get USB.
What could possibly go wrong?

Do I need to start adding a sarcasm meter?
No, you need to be funny, interesting, or insightful.

So it's there. But not in the manual.
"California Pyro 1 Card Required"
Yes. Do want.

You forgot to add hopefully I wouldn't become badly injured on your property..
Are you the guy who came up with the "sharp knees" comment?
It's not the roof that leaks, it's the air conditioner. AND IT'S FINE. That's what the garbage can is for.

come to think of it, same thing.
Swing and a miss..
Is that what we're calling it these days?
Yeah, to be honest, I look forward to a robot that can "force choke" it's "opponent" too.
I need a new password manager app. A wallet to keep track of my credit card info would be good too.
Since it was a Microsoft employee, I'm going to assume that it was really just one contribution and 360 patches to make it work.
Expect more patches soon.

I'm holding out for Lynx 2012
We don't really give a fuck what you say.
It's a news blog for nerds, not a church.
Departments that don't produce meaningful results get axed.
