Please, it's simple minded to yell causation for a population's gun possession rates and its homicide rate. Why ignore all of the social, economic, historical and geographic issues?
For example, Canada in 2003 (the latest year I have numbers for) the homicide rate continued its steady decline to 2 per 100K. Our level of gun ownership is probably comparable to that of the US -- especially in the rural areas.
Or, there are those that believe that the "natural" economics of the world is incomplete since it does not account for the value (either present or future) of clean air, healthy ecosystems, etc.
Also keep in mind the small/home office apps people run daily to manage the lil' bidness empire: Quicken, Quickbooks, Simple Accounting, etc. Plus all of the tax apps that are starting up at this time of year.
I know the SOBs at Intuit have me on a three year upgrade cycle due to dropped support of certain features, lack of bug fixes, etc. It's definitely slower than they'd prefer, but it's more frequent that I want as well...
And, of course, all of the vendors involved will use the newest and greatest of Microsoft's development tools and libraries.
The only "win" I've eked out is to use a tax app other than Intuit's (CanTax for those who care to know).
I've been on a hobby farm where there were a couple of tame sows -- I'm surprised that even four men could hold down an irate, full grown boar. No tranquilizer?
Is there still a quest for Karma? I haven't paid attention to my own since they switched to descriptions from the scoring system. I don't seem to be missing out on any features...
That's it -- it's an accessibility feature for those with poor eyesight! She's not unrealistically endowed -- those are the iconographic equivalent of access ramps (queue reference to Scott McCloud).
I wonder if the game industry can apply for government grants with this line of thinking...
I interact with a large number of scientists, non-scientists, and anti-scientists, and it's quite apparent that there's broad concern among scientists in different fields over anti-science crazies of a variety that exists in the United States and Canada/Europe, and that the most dangerous anti-science crazies -- in terms of direct violence as well as insidious influence on society -- are not the redneck bible-thumpers.
Are the "the most dangerous anti-science crazies -- in terms of direct violence as well as insidious influence on society" those identified by the majority of the scientists you consort with or by yourself?
your generalizations were too simple to take into account reality!
But your (so far) baseless ones are irreducibly complex, I suppose?
I happen to agree with some of what you say, but your vitriol tends to distract and obscure from the rest of your message.
They represent a small (but significant) percentage of the overall hostility to science ...
I work at a non-profit that promotes the value of science
Excellent -- then you must have actual statistics to support your characterisations of people who are hostile to science, right? Or is this some politiking of your own?
What would your preference be: continuing on with Mythbusters (hoping and assuming sustained/increasing popularity so you can do more "wild n' crazy" things) or being contracted out to help out on the next Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/ movie?
Just curious -- did the steel industry implosion release a lot of computer geeks? If so, were they mostly legacy/mainframe types?
My brother-in-law is a VMS guy and he took a (supposedly) lower paying mill job instead of sticking it out with the consulting company (EDS) that was running IT before the big consolidation.
Now he's doing better by getting paid for all work hours...
Because particle physicists won't bring me food.
Or they'll only bring it to you one subatomic particle at a time. *
* which means, on a prorated basis, particle physicists are paid extremely well.
Watch out, cubicledrone! cryfreedomlove will apply for a business process patent on your idea and make millions!

Nice try though.
You're correct about everything except where the mind probes go -- our alien subcontractors will explain further ...
Unfortunately I do the taxes for my extended family (another 3 adults) and I used to do it for my wife and myself.

The ACLU has a less dramatic but just as powerful scenario in SWF form.

Levelling up, of course! Why do you think Evercrack and WoW are so popular?
Technically, how many licenses does this require? It seems that there may be legal and/or cost barriers to this approach ...
