In terms of war it's negligible. It's not nice, and we're certainly not going to run around bragging about it, but it's war, and these losses are nothing compared to what these folks have suffered at the hands of their own leaders.
What about the thousands of murders on the part of capitalist nations overseas?
Deplorable, but still nothing compared to what non-democratic nation states do to their own people.
Afghani civilians meeting US bombs, anyone?
It's a matter of degree. The amount of Afghani civilians that meet US bombs or bullets will never approach even a fraction of what they have suffered at the hands of the Russians in the past or their own governments. The comparison would be LAUGHABLE if it weren't so sad.
...children being killed by cancer...capitalist...dump...
You're free to broadcast these mis-doings and even initiate movements and legislation without fear of being drawn out of your home in the wee hours of the night and gunned down or bludgeoned to death in front of your family.
You owe this to the freedom that comes with living in an ESTABLISHED DEMOCRACY. A free-market, warts and all, is part and parcel of an established democracy. Governments that control their economies generally control their populace as well. Where power and control is centralized to that degree, slaghters in the thousands if not millions are inevitable.
Democracy and free-market Capitalism are not perfect. People still get hurt and sometimes killed.
But to what degree?
There's no comparison.
Freedom. Like a fish in water, it's all around you to such a degree that you take it as a given, and in many cases are doubtful as to the fact that it actually exists.
What they might need to do is develop an 'organic' sail that grows over time, increasing the surface area to match (as closely as possible) the inverse sqare rule.
They should put in a simple switch interface, then you could use a foot switch or whatever.
This would be great for the physically handicapped, who are otherwise getting constantly reamed (or being 'harvested' for their Medicaid funding or whatever) for back-dated overpriced technology based on Apple II Plus - era hardware.
Not to forget hands-free full-throttle porn surfing of course!
My pet (rat?) theory is that the brain, while awake, is in 'recieve' mode, regardless of how much or little we are actively 'thinking' at any given time. REM level sleep is when the input effectively stops (except for a few low-level threads to detect breaks in the sound/environmental impression patterns that have been proven over time to imply a 'safe/uneventful' night's sleep - until your child cries or a thief breaks a window in the basement) and our cpu can sift through the data, keeping some bits, tossing others, and making all sorts of connections and projections with our existing 'database' of knowledge, impressions and experiences. When deprived of REM level sleep, our brains never get to relax and assimilate what they have recieved, but try to anyways, leading to the hallucinations and such.
The deprivation is as frustrating and alarming to our system (over a longer term) as being deprived of air or water. The body/mind goes into Panic mode eventually in the effort to extricate itself from whatever situation is causing the deprivation. All these factors stack up and grow worse over time with extended deprivation.
Sleep and Dreams, essentially, are when our brains get to breathe.
Nope. Sleep deprivation (lack of REM level sleep specifically) leads to hallucinations (NOT the fun kind) and eventual nervous breakdown and death. It wasn't/isn't used as a form of torture because it's pleasant and good for you.
If this drug counteracts this somehow I'll be very suprised and very interested...and very skeptical. There's got to be some form of short-term or long-term payback somewhere along the line.
The article mentions that the robot, if tipped, is programmed to fall in such a way as to minimize damage. Does it tuck and roll, I wonder? I'd love to see a video of that!
The most embarrassing thing is hearing Anakin or whomever say things like "My Lady..." with a dorky midwestern accent. Don't even get me started on Portman, who always sounds like a whining Valley Girl dolt.
Lucas could have hired some unknown actors from around the world for virtually nothing who could've acted circles around these brats and really helped to bring the thing to life.
BTW, How come Anakin grows up so fast, and the Queen still looks like a teen? Then they fall in love... in the first movie there was a big age difference... it's a little strange. Oh well, just a movie.
Yeah. And how come neither can act his or her way out of a wet (imaginary) paper bag?
Actually, they're targeting ME. I've been using Linux since 95 or so and loving it, but this sounds like what I've been looking for. I'm a little tired of the constant tinkering that the typical distro entails, and what distro DOESN'T sell for at least $30? Sounds like this one can update on-the-fly like the old TurboLinux, which is great as well.
Yahooskies!
'Junk science' according to the the US edition only. The Italian edition praised it!
If give have a fig for some semblance of clarity on the issue, read the rebutals by Lomberg on his site, along with clearly-stated support from some other Fine Fellows. Take it up with them.
Otherwise, if you already Know It All, go ahead and smoke some pot and hand out leaflets in Harvard Sq...
; )
It would have to be manned and maintained by self-replicating androids, who, when the time came, could go so far as raising and parenting a starter population of humans (and later livestock) from a frozen backlog of genetic material and/or blueprints, perhaps after getting started on terraforming and such, hopefully not to the detriment of a pre-existing population.
Whew.
There's a story for ya!
Glaciers can and do move 'up hill' when pushed upwards from the glacial mass below and behind. I'm sure that's what the book was talking about. If the book gave you the impression of giant magical ice-cubes forging their way up hills like so many charging rhinos, well, chalk it up to lackluster writing.
I shudder to think of the images that popped into your head when you read about 'tectonic plates'...
; )
Apologies if your post was just a joke.
"Rocket Man" was written by David Bowie.

For saying "Sweet!". Don't feel bad. The guy who said "It's all good" got a boot to the crotch!
Only the first few times, then they'll have precedence.
Thankyou VERY much indeed!

Priceless!It's admirably Cthulhian.

Round perhaps, but not neccessarily spherical... ; )
Make that, "The eXtreme Great Mushroom Shooting Rainbow Fun Machine".
In the pants, where grits belong.
