So I figure this isn't as relevant as the new article, as I understand from my gamestop friends the current polices and environment at Gamestop are much more Draconian than Software Etc. ever were. However, as a former Software Etc. manager, I definitely brought tons of games home to check them out. I'm pretty much a hard core gamer. At least I was till I got hitched.:) I even once, after quitting, brought a game back that I had opened and found "didn't work with my pc." I leveraged the fact that I knew the managers having worked there before. However, I did take care of the product knowing it would be sold again. And back then, all we needed was a shrink machine, and usually we received sheets of factory security stickers so we could repack the box without the customer knowing.............
Is what this amounts to. It's his book and with the poor references and shoddy logic of his hypothesis I wonder why/. is posting this. As the parent article catagorized - troll -. And I'm completely unsuprised to see that he's a former software development director, who are frequently the least knowledgeable of anyone in the IT profession. And to whit, check out his references! The link that argues in favor of the idea that being an IT is not a profession attacks software development, his own profession.
Is this a case of a self-loathing closet IT? I think so.
The referenced article on what a profession is claims that "Widely available initial education is just beginning to emerge." in the case of programming. Hrmmmm...My old high school has been teaching computer programming for over 15 years. Every decent JC college and above that I know of has been teaching computer programming, networking, and relevant topics for at least 15 years, many for more than 20 or even 30. It's this kind of blatant lies or horribly poor research in journalism that creates "credible" references for guys like this, who if you read his site has only an email address as an indication to what his name is - Dan.
Dan, you're a sycophantic liar, a lazy whiner and all around flaming bag of feces. Although I agree with your other post on your "website" for your "book" that no one else seems to have heard of, this article is truly showing the worst facet of humanity save for evil-mass-murdering-dictators.
You start your article as if you don't work in the IT industry, place yourself in the realm of users, and then admit at the very end that you were formerly employed in the IT industry. As if this was the clincher on the validity of your statement, but you submitted this to Slashdot. Were you smoking PCP or something better? I'd hope you were at least on a week long cracksmoking binge to be this delusional.
I guess that complete lack of credible and accurate research is outside of the realm journalism, what was I thinking.
Everyone here has pointed out the obvious flaws in your "article". Yes IT's are arrogant. Yes there are plenty of them who have no reason to be arrogant, but you relate sysadmins to programmers, as if the programmers provide support for their software. This is usually not the case. Unless you're working with custom scripted software, which happens in many workplaces but they're certainly not in the majority, then your IT staff is NOT supporting code that they created and implemented. In fact, even in cases where custom in house software is created the programmers are often not the poor suckers out on the floor instructing their peers on how to use YOUR shitty software.
Remember when you used to be in the IT field? YOU lead teams of people who coded. Do you think that Dilbert just appeared one day and everyone thought it was funny? No, it came about by years and years of programmers being pushed, coerced, forced, enticed and even held at gunpoint by people like you, Microsoft, and other bloatware producing, deadline focused retards. Sure, you address the problems of overwhelming deadlines, but you whitewash the massive problem by placing blame in the court of the programmers and claim that they just don't understand.
So what you're saying is that programmers are largely to blame for poor code because they're lazy, incompetent, or cheating. Hell, all of the above.
Hmmmm...Let's lock Dan in a room of EA programmers and their ilk from other similar companies that use contracts and the law to turn good programmers into the Ben-Hurs and Spartacuses of their time....And let him make a blanket, deceitful statement like that.
Dan, you're almost the worst kind of person. You lie and cause the same negative emotions you claim to want to fix. You and your kind create problems that you then shift blame for to other innocent parties because you can't handling being wrong or in a negative spotlight.
I didn't even hear/see any publicity until this...I guess I have my head in the sand, but usally Tekken gets all kinds of press when a new one comes out.
They'd better bring it here to the states in the arcade, cause it don't matter that no one plays coin op anymore. That they don't play coin op is just lame. Arcades are the best, and it'll be a sad day when they really go the way of the dodo bird.
Has anyone noticed that Starcade is not on the list of shows to be kept on air? Neither is Arena, and I highly enjoyed both shows as a gamer.
I don't exactly know how either G4 or TechTV were doing financially, but it seemed neither had a problem....I know that both are niche shows, but maybe someone will start a campaign to save them?
If anything, Arena is somewhat of a first as a major network show dedicated to competitive video gaming. I would think that AMD/Nvidia etcetera with it's current pro sponsorships would like to keep this alive.
As I do not have the kinf of money to create my own cabinet, a MAME box for my TV would be awesome. I have a computer, and several good controllers, so $300 would get me a Radeon All In Wonder and everything else great about my PC like DivX, Quake, and alternate EMU's:)
However, If HannaHo were to produce specific controllers for games like Tron, Robotron, 720, Millipede, Ikari Warriors/Heavy Barrell, etcetera....I'd be hard pressed to NOT purchase the system.
I used to work for a small and a large reseller about 3 years ago. During this time I found that many fujitsu drives were returned, and in much larger quantities than other manufacturers. Since that time I've never considered buying fujitsu as I remember so many bad experiences with them.
Selected Ambient Works Volume One and Two, Come to Daddy, Richard D. James, and then pilfer through his works as AFX, The Aphex Twin, and any other incarnation he goes by. Mr. James's music is some of the most original music in existence. Even if you don't like it, there are things you can learn from him. Aphex is in my top 5 artists of all time.
This is very true. If you had spent time reading the gripes of developers on websites like The Register you'd understand why this is so true. With 32Mb of RDRAM it's extremely difficult to fit multiple textures into active memory. I may not have stated that correctly, but I do remember developers griping about the difficulty of PS2, and the ease of use on the Dreamcast.
I highly reccomend using the Dreamcast, as their development scene is broad and established. Plus the Dreamcast is now around 80 or 90 dollars. Development is cheap, easy and effective. I'm a huge fan of the Dreamcast, and I was truly saddened by Sega's failure to market the system effectively, ending in their presence in the console market.
Mod me down if you want, but I live through ClearChannel Hell. I can't help but say this.
As a resident of San Diego, this is abhorrently clear(isn't it ironic?) and true.
Many people may not know it, but law regulates how many stations a company can own in a given area. I think it's 4. But since San Diego is conveniently located by the Mexican border, ClearChannel has purchased several radio stations located out of Tiajuana and beyond.
It's been well known for the past few years how bad ClearChannel sucks at programming radio. Just listen to a day of Rock 105.3 or 91X. It boggles the mind how many times(must I ask myself, why?) you might hear the same song. What I love is when one ClearChannel station plays a song, then another sister station plays it at almost the same time! WTF?
Straight from my heart to any FoggyChannel executive:
FUCK YOU!
Several people have suggested an Air Marshall, which would put the responsibility with a trained and certified officer(s). This, combined with the aforementioned low velocity bullets designed for use in air traffic would make a great combination.
Arming the customers? Yeah, sure. Bad idea. Untrained civilians would make a bad peacekeeping force in this kind of situation. But a trained professional would make a perfect person(s) for air security.
This should dramatically alter your viewpoint. If it doesn't then I'd like to know why. Look forward to seeing a response.
I have no proof;) I did read about it in several newspapers, so I can only trust what others have told me. Again, if someone can correct me or provide further details, I'd appriciate it.
I agree with you that a capitalist environment is most likely one that we will prosper in.
But I'd like to dream of a utopian society of where government is unnecessary and corporations never violate either a persons or the environments rights. That is truly a utopian dream.
But I do agree with the previous poster in that we need to slow down and fix the things that don't currently work. I've felt this way for a while, but I truly don't see a way of doing it. Not feasibly of course.
One thing I'm still unsure of is GE. I am truly scared of the consequences when one person screws up. Mind you that "killer bees" were created by a cross-breeding experiment (correct me if I'm wrong). No system of checks and balances in existence is error-proof, to my knowledge. If there are, there are very few.
Some folks think that anti-matter experiments should not be done. From what I've heard, if one gram of anti-matter should come into contact with matter, the WHOLE universe would be utterly destroyed. I'm no physicist, so I don't know what it would take to do this. Details would be fascinating to know.
For all we know, we don't even exist anymore, and all of this reality is on god's backup server. Ghost would really come in handy right about now.;) This however is a discussion for philosophers.
The whole point is that there is a lot in this world that isn't running properly. I for one think that we should do what's needed to fix our problems before continuing.
You are obviously an intelligent and informed person and I will eagerly await your response to either my post or any other rebuttals.
I believe you are correct, and I have speculated that this is the case. Most AUP's don't even allow sneezing, if you catch my drift, but it should still be permissible.
I don't know about your ISP but @Home, and many of the operators that offer @Home don't allow VPN, or anything like it(eg:VNC, PC anywhere). Supposedly the software establishes a portion of the bandwidth that is reserved for the user regardless of whether or not they use it. I don't know if this is true, but it would pose a problem for both users bandwidth(if true). It's still likely to not be allowed by many ISPs.

This is actually not to far off the mark. The controller looks cumbersome. It'll change things, allright. People are going to make decent controller, hopefully. The X-Box might even fail due to a bad controller design and cause further Wall Street doubt about the video game market.
I predict that the same might even happen to the GameCube. That controller looks very ungainly as well.
But then, people who buy the PS2 (whose graphics are pretty unattractive) baffle me too. I know that's gonna start a flame, but frankly I just don't care for aliased graphics. I really don't see why I should have to put up with jagged lines. I'm still at a loss to why the PS2 can't deal with that.
Plus with Sony adopting the Gator system, I don't feel like giving them money. Especially after trying to cover up why they didn't have enough units, blaming the retailers, and outright lying about the systems performance.
And I hate Microsoft, and I'm certainly not giving them money either.
