This annoys me to no end. If I'm on hold, DON'T try and sell me crap, just answer my call ASAP. If you try and sell me more crap I'll most likely put you on my list of companies I refuse to deal with and this will be the last call you get fom me. If you want to be informative, fine tell me how I can get information pertaining to my call. I need a phone #? Ok, press 3 there's a list of office phone numbers. I need your address? ok press 7 etc etc.. but DON'T try and sell me something.
It all depends at the crowds you're trying to woo.
Myself I prefer absolutely nothing tacked on to my default installation other than the advertised purpose. If I want to add functionality, I'll go looking then.
If you're catering to the masses (ooh look shiny!) then you'll probably have to strike a balance and include the popular functions while leaving the cosmetic or trivial ones to be added in later.
How are these system supposed to scribble in the margins and tell you your ideas don't fit together?
How do they judge the content? What if you submit an excellent paper on middle ages history but the assignment was on socialism?
Human feedback is required in order to learn how to write well, you can't just expect a machine to tell you how to improve your writing. Grammar perhaps, but not ideas and how to let them flow coherently.
In order for these students to get that feedback someone has to read it, and since they're reading it anyway, why not just grade it then?
Seems like they are trying to solve the wrong problem with this system, or a problem that dosen't exist. (Are there really so many papers to mark you need a machine to do it?)
I recently did just this for the Metallica concert I went to. They give you the option of mp3 or flac for the soundboard recordings. It's a download only thing, but they also make up some jewel case inserts for burning it once you get it downloaded. There is no DRM whatsoever on the files. I think the cost is $9.95 for the mp3 and 12.95 for the flac and you get 2 CD's worth of music (approximately 2 hours depending on the show you want to download). Although everyone here hates them this seems to me to be quite fair. Live Metallica
I recently had to try to make sense of a friends computer and along with the 10 or so viruses (I'm sure some cancelled each other out =) )
But when I ran ad-aware at the time it took well over 45 minutes and came up with just over 8500 things, no that's not a typo; eight thousand, five hundred plus.
I guess she shouldn't have let her disgruntled boyfriend do his thing on that machine.
When I asked why the administrator account was still wide open, the response was, 'There's an administrator account?'
Was quicker to reformat than to deal with all that crap.
I'm just telling people to buy Macs from now on. Let Apple deal with this, not me.
Nobody knows how it should be done. Plain and simple. Sure there are 50 different ways to shuffle 1's and 0's around to produce something that kind of solves a problem someone may or may not have (customers seldom even know the problem they are paying to solve).
Add to that the string of phbs, development team, testing team. Then you end up with people who don't really understand the problem, solving it with tools that we don't know if they work or not, or which they might not even fully understand. (Have you proved GCC is correct lately? How about.NET?)
So until we can get a method that ties programming to what it really is (problem solving) we get to poke about blindly in the dark to find our 'solution' and hope it shuts up the customer long enough for them to write the check. We're slowly getting there, but because programming is still a new thing it hasn't been remotely fully explored yet.
There's lots of room to figure out how to make a computer solve a problem once it's defined. Finding the problem is a major portion of the battle. The rest comes in finding a repeatable, provable way to solve it.
Until that happens youll need your blindfold and poking stick handy.
I'll second that, I have the book sitting beside me, and not only will your ability to draw surprise yourself, the chapter on handwriting will fix, or at least improve legibility. I originally bought the book to learn how to draw. The handwriting is a nice bonus however.
This just goes to show that you don't need to be an 800lb Gorilla to succeed, you just need to be useful. This is where both Apple and open source competes. They are both useful to different groups (with some overlap) but since the user base of all computer users is so large, 3% is still a large number of people. I guess it's proof that if you are good at what you do, people will come to you.
It's not always PURPLE you can adjust the colours and brightness. It's all computer controlled so you can have any colour your heart desires.
But...if you want, you can keep that colour scheme, throw in a brass pole and a mirror ball and you'd be all set for the strip club theme party you've been itching to host =)
"By the way, cdbaby.com uses only RealMedia for sampling their tracks."
Yet I'm using ITunes to do that exact same thing right now... Any mp3 player should be able to. It's just a stream, they don't care what you use to play it.

Glancing at my list of twin primes I can see it's infinite.

There is no clear cut answer.
Glad to see we agree, for standardized tests they've been doing this for years with the scantrons etc.
As for papers, essays and the like, I think this just won't work.

Well I don't have a TV in my apartment either, so I point my furniture at the wall the projector shines on =)
Lets see the responses.
I dosen't work on platform $FOO
Real developers use language $BAR
Java is proprietary therefore it sucks $FOO is much better because it's $OS LICENSED
I tried it but it didn't do $OBSCURE THING properly so I went back to $POPULAR THING
I heard that MS is discontinuing support for it so why bother.
It's just another incarnation of $FOO why do we need so many ways to do $BAR why can't there be one standard?
$FOO is so much better at $BAR than this everyone should use $FOO.
$FOO dosen't make coffee
etc..
I'm sure you'll point out the spelling errors and missed points.
They bitch now...
Wait until these things go supersonic.
THEN they can bitch about the noise.
Or more likely they'll have that annoying noise problem dealt with by then.

So now hopefully it won't be confused with the movie of the same name.

And, whats to stop people from faking the metadata there?
From the web page
'These binaries have been tested and certified to run with FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE, but may also work on other 4.X releases.'
So of course you should expect that some things might not be all that great on 4.9.
Have you tried it on 4.8?
I'd be curious to see if the same thing happened.
The sky is clearing.
