  7. $0 has been distributed on Puretracks.com Enters The Online Music Fray · · Score: 2, Interesting

The money being collected through this levy here in Canada is NOT being distributed according to this article
here dated January 2003. Not sure if this has changed since then, but I doubt it.

"At the meeting, tech industry groups are likely to point out that the CPCC has not yet distributed a cent of the millions it has collected in fees over the years to musicians.

Since 1999, the CPCC has collected more than CN$28 million in copyright compensation fees. It expects to collect more than CN$100 million in levies next year. "

So somebody somewhere is racking up a lot of interest payments on the musicians money, I wonder if they'll see that too?.

"The CPCC is poised to begin making payments in 2003," a statement from the organization reads.

I bet it will be delivered by the flying pig too.

  8. Infinite Markup in some instances on IT's Most Outrageous Markups? · · Score: 1

    I've seen this before.
You receive some rather neat toy from your distributor for selling X widgets during their promotion. Said toy is rare and unusual and sought after.
Boss takes said toy and sells it in the store as a 'Collectors Item' for pure profit.

    None of which you get.

I'm sure that happens all the time elsewhere too.

  17. Re:OSS is feature obsessed on Blender Gets Audio Sequencing · · Score: 4, Insightful

Simply because fixing bugs is boring and often tedious. Not many people get their kicks bug fixing. Writing new features is much more appealing since it is a) new and b) makes Open Source Project X that much more comparable to Closed Source Project Y

So new features are added first because they are fun and increase product visibility. Bugs often take a back seat due to the drudgery associated with them.

It's both, stores hate taking back opened software since their distributor usually hate it even more.
I would imagine if you went high enough up the distribution chain someone would take it back if were diligent enough to hunt down said person. But to most people the hassle isn't worth the price of the software.

  22. Re:CompUSA is at fault here on California EULA Lawsuit · · Score: 2, Interesting

It's common practice for a select group of people to go buy the software, take it home, copy it then return it to the store for a refund. I used to run into these people all the time when I worked selling computer games. We would only take back defectives (which we would verify) if the box was opened.
