Microsoft will get the most traction with Windows 8 on laptops and desktops with touch screen displays augmenting a normal keyboard. After using tablets for a while, I've recently felt the urge in some circumstances to reach up from the keyboard to swipe or pinch the display while using my laptop and desktop. Apple may have to play catch up, if touch displays become common outside the tablet format.

As you say, consoles cost way more than the Apple TV ($99). They also tend to be a lot bigger and have fan noise. Now say you want streaming media to four TVs in a household. That cost difference becomes a problem. The solution is a very small, very silent puck for under $100. Welcome to Roku. $50 to $99, same form factor (almost exactly) as Apple TV. The advantage of Roku is they push their SDK for third party apps as whoring hard as possible to everyone possible. Apple is mired in their desire to have tight control over content.

That is the real reason Apple TV is not popular.

Mike Rowe was also in the "World's Dirtiest Man" episode of the show Curiosity. At one point he was with a food inspector at a fish market. The inspector picked some worms out of fresh fish on camera. Mike asked "So those are bad?". The inspector replied no, that was perfectly normal. They then had Mike eat some sushi and they shoved an endoscope down his throat to try and catch the worms being digested.

The moral to the story: if it is biological, someone will stick it in their pie hole. Also: study hard so you don't have to endure the abuses Mike does.

If something works for Apple, there is no reason for Microsoft to ignore it.

I can understand Microsoft may be frustrated with partners not following through on a long term strategy. They had success establishing their own gaming console, maybe they can do the same with tablets and phones. It's not like there is a huge base of third party manufacturers in these categories already using Microsoft products to piss off.
