You are my hero. This is one of the most important skills for any profession, and I've been experiencing the lack of it in more and more engineers. It is a disheartening tendency to react to anything unexpected or poorly defined by throwing up hands and giving up. You would think the anemic support from most companies these days would strengthen the ability to dig deeper on your own, but I have not seen it.

"Make stuff work in the face of difficulty." may be a little more accurate.

The lack of food giveaways may not bring down the NK dictatorship, but the presence of the aid helps it. Why pay to help a government that is so immutably hostile to us? It does nothing to further our interests. We get no real concessions, just lip service until they have extracted more tribute from us. This is not theoretical, we have been down this road many times before and NK has proven themselves reliably dishonest.

There was nothing mean about that. The fiction character Sheldon in the OP had a problem with Wil, and the post you are responding to references that.

From Wikipedia: "He also used to idolize fictional prodigy Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation for qualities of the character Wesley Crusher he found similar to himself, but Wil Wheaton's surprise cancellation of an appearance at a Jackson, Mississippi Star Trek convention in 1995 soured him to both the character and actor."

If *anyone* would get a chuckle out of the reference, it is Wil Wheaton.

People know he is a nice guy, that is why I nominated him for "Tyrannical Overlord" in this Slashdot poll.
