    ...not so much that it would ruin someone's life.

    $1500 would sink a lot of families that are getting by but don't have significant savings. That $1500 would force them to miss a lot of bills which would cascade in fees and reduced credit rating which causes further expense for items like insurance with rates based on credit ratings. Once you get that far behind then you and your family are screwed.

    Before anyone pipes in with "they should not have done the crime then!", remember that this is the extortion payment to avoid the more expensive route of defending themselves in court, which would also ruin their lives.

    Don't blame religion for the negative impacts that stupid people have upon society.

    I blame religion for exploiting the stupidity of people to gain influence and sometimes control over governments and me. I have no problem with others believing in myths as long as they don't try and force me to believe or subject me to the rules of their myths.

    I had a laser shot into my eye to reduce a blister on my retina (central serous retinopathy). It was all high tech, except they need to keep your head still while they press this apparatus against your eye. They had a frame to press your face against, but I could not hold myself still while they did that. The doctor supplemented the laser with a gorilla like nurse to pin my head to the frame with his hands.

    Not the most dignified procedure, but it worked.

    This money is used by the universities/colleges to keep tuition lower...

    For state colleges, this is correct. That is why in state tuition is lower than out of state tuition, because the state taxes cover a portion of the college costs. I don't know if private colleges get state funding.

    I'm trying to imagine this. I doubt there is automated equipment to do it and doing it by hand would be super nasty. I'm guessing that the quart per pound of hair is in ideal circumstances such as the mat being submerged in pure oil. Throwing a mat into the ocean would probably soak up more water than oil and then sink. Then you would have a bunch of dolphins with greasy toupees.

    Dell is a leader in the race to the bottom in terms of support and hardware. If you are migrating from Sun hardware, I would think there are other competitors (HP, IBM) better suited to your needs.

    An NPR interview this morning with a BP executive asked two simple questions:
    1. Are you responsible for the leak?
    2. Will you pay for the results of the leak?

    The response was along the lines of "We will cooperate with cleanup and containment efforts, and will pay any legitimate claims."
    I think this will be a long (decades?), dirty fight to hold BP accountable.
