My School (UT) ahs a similar thing. It basicaly costs us $6 per cd. So if a proggy takes more than one cd it costs more, but it's still dirt cheap.
However, in the computer lab we have red hat boxes chugging along nicely although no one uses them. (Im on the Dallas campus). And we had a beaowuulf clsuter at one point, not sure what happened with it, as I am no longer working for the school.
Assertions can be dangerous. Many people make confident assertions about subjects concerning which they have little knowldge. For example, me talking about coding.:)
I checked the netire list looking for Memento, a personal favorite, and I onyl see one mentnion. Under best original script. I fnd this odd, since its adapted from a shrot story. FotR is nominated as an adapted script, so shouldnt memento _also_ be in that category? Maybe hte/. moderators arent the only people with crack pipes.:0

Ok, a lot of people are saying to hash it so that it cant be unencrypted if stolen. Am I missing somehting here or will a dictionary attack not work? I mean, you know how long a credit card numebr is,a nd you know it only using numbers. And most of the customers will have common names. What am I missing?
Also interesting, in muy mind, is the study showing that frequent napster users bought many times more CDs than non napster users. I do not currently have any priated software on my box, du soely to the fact that Im running linux and I couldn't get Linux version of Unreal to isntall without the actual cd. Which is fine becasue as soon as I decided to get serious about playing Unreal I went out and bought the cd. Where did I get the cracked vesion? At a lan party so I could play with my friends, and frankly I almsot never used it after that. I bought the CD because it was int he long run more convinient to do so. Next time I build a box or my hard drive crashes its easier to pop in the cd than it is to surf porno-infested warez sites or try and get a decent connection on gnutella or the like. The big differnece? The Unreal CD was reasonably priced! IMagine that. I didnt break the bank to buy it, and so I could buy it. Is piracy always wrong? No. Often it is. But I don't see a problem wiht sharing one copy of something with my various machines, for example. On the theory that I purchased the software and no one ought to have hte right to tell me what I can and cannot do wiht my own property, assuming im not violating somkeone elses rights, of course. Software shoudln't be a liscence. Nor are binaries speech, unlike source code (wasn't their a ruling about this recently?) so how can oyu copywrite something that isnt speach? I mean, how shoudl you be able to? Oh well.
I ehard a part of this when I was very young and hadn't read the books and had no idea what was going on. But now i shall certainly lsiten and quote along from memory. This is sweet.

I'm actualy far more interested in the more practical applciations, like the potention vaccum cleaner mentioned. If it's not too expensive I would definetly dole out for one of these. Heaven knows my cartpet could need it. But what else could these be used for? Heck, it would be kewl to have a bunch of little ants the cleant to dust out of my machine, or to unclog the toilet or clean out behind the fridge. This sounds like it could lead to somse perty kewl "furturistic" sstuff, and maybe even at an aaffordable cost.
It's not like we could use the money for other stuff. Like paying teachers, for instance. Teachers are gonna do a lto more than computers can ever hope to, and if we pay them more, we might even be able to attract people who could be great teachers.
