> Microsoft has a special OEM program for home built systems, where you can get Windows with any hardware purchase
That's interesting. I didn't know that. How can I use this program with other vendors, like NewEgg, or someone smaller like CoolDrives? Can I use this discount direct from Microsoft with proof of hardware purchase?
What hardware "counts"? If I buy a motherboard from one place, a case from another, memory from another, and drives from another, could I buy discounted Windows at any of them?
This reminds me of an great story (hang on... check slashdot... reload...) umm where was I.. oh I'd better get that invoice out right away (umm check slashdot... reload... ) ok now.. lets see oh that deadline is coming up... (wait... check slashdot.. reload... ) mmmm oh damn it's my girlfriends birthday today and I didn't get her anything! Hmmm what should I get her (just a sec... check slashdot... reload...) oh here comes my boss - he's going to ask if I finished that bug fix yet... but I've been too busy!
> a hit or two of every URL that you get, if the server is taken to its knees because of the hits, then it was a spam.
> there are some problems No, that's a really great idea! If Yahoo has the infrastructure to send 1 million emails, then they also have the infrastructure to handle 2 million web hits. But if spammer-x sends 1 million ads for some web site it's a good bet that site can't handle 2 million hits.
Only problem left is evil competitors purposely sending spam to bring down their competitors web sites. Maybe having links to their competitors in white-on-white so the spam doesn't do any good accidentally.
I run RDP to connect to my home computer from "the road", laptop, office, friend's houses, etc.
Changing the port is a good idea, but then how do you connect to it? The RDP client doesn't have a PORT option. Or does this only work on clients you control (like your laptop) and can fiddle with the registry on?

There will NEVER be people in government that understand IT. The mindsets are mutually exclusive.
One deals with hard facts which, when ignored, cause problems.
The other deals with sound bites that appeal to emotions; facts are irrelevant.
It has always been this way, and it always will... because in order to rise in politics you must win the approval of masses of people who don't understand the issues you are discussing, and you must currie favors with others in power and marginalize your opponents (whether or not they are "right" about any particular issue).
Wires? You mean integrated circuits with epoxy metled over them to hide even their identity.
You are going to have to make a device that can read the output of 3 color electron gun drivers, a vertical position control, and a horizontal position control and decode it all back to an image.
> should developers of open source software license their software so as to prevent it from being used in such killing devices?
This is a great thought. By forbidding using open source software in killing devices we will cause great numbers of lawyers to approach the fighters to serve notice of the lawsuits. The fighters, of course, are already killing people and killing a few lawyers that get in their way won't bother them.
Killers use up their inventory of killing robots. Software developers feel good about being on the moral high-road. Lawyers die.
> Why destroy when you can simply have everything be encrypted?
I do computer forensics. If we find an encrypted drive it's a bad sign. We'll get a supeona from the judge and let the cops get the decryption keys from the drive owner.
If we find a drive that has a hardware failure, there isn't much we can do. Unless it's a huge deal (FBI, NSA, etc) nobody is going to open the drive and do a chemical analysis to see if the drive has been melted by death-rays on purpose.
Of course, once we get to know which manufacturers and models have this feature we will be back in business:-)
> No idea. I suppose...
> No idea. Ask...
> No idea. As long...
No offense, but why did you bother to reply?
You misunderstand.
According to Microsoft, running Windows with any kind of security is NOT an authentic authorized use of their software.
Therefore you are in violation.

I'm playing it over and over.
It's bringing back some great memories of watching bad 50's sci-fi movies as a kid.
For some reason I keep picturing a fat gorilla-suited space alien in a diving helmet....
Oh no... I've played it too many times... I've alerted the terrible space aliens that have been monitoring our airwaves!
Everybody run! Save your selves! Save your wives!

> For each spam you receive, send a copy to each member of the congress/parliament
Yeah, and I'm *sure* they will read each and every one you send.
Or read any of their email.
Or even have a computer.

> An idea
A really bad one.
> Start having all email servers reply message for message automatically.
The From address and Reply-to address are fake. They may be using YOUR email address.
How would you like that? Ten million spams all claiming to be from YOU and each one sending a reply to the smouldering ashes of your mail server.
Bill: "I was wro..."
Bill: "I admit I was wro..."
Bill: "WROOOO..."
Bill: "Yes, I was wroooo..."
Bill: "umm... mea culpa."

How much do you want to bet that an official at "assistant secretary" level is chosen for his political status and not his technical skills?
The same is true for the upper level officials at CIA, FBI, DOE, and yes, even NASA.

Why would you punish yourself by using a product whos vendor hates its existence?
Microsoft will make using Frontpage on Linux the most painful experience you've ever had, trying to force you into switching to Windows.
MOD PARENT UP!
.com and if that fails they call their tech savvy kids and ask why the Internet is broken.
Joe public doesn't remember the TLD anyway. They try
TLDs are a bad idea.
Why would having slashdot.com and slashdot.org going to different sites EVER be a good thing?!

> Good to see restraint in the discussion. We wouldn't want to lose our heads over this issue!
Nobody has brought up Nazis yet.
I just tried the unlocking codes on a pretty girl waiting for a bus... you know... just in case it might work.
She looked at me like I was insane, asked what I just said. When I explained, she slapped me.
There was no sex.
Oh well, I didn't think it would work, but I had to try... just in case.

Nothing gets karma like killing lawyers!

But... but if we proofread how will we get FP?!
The biological art is neat, but what the hell is the picture of Sparkle-Motion doing in there?

Excellent idea. You should show solidarity by destroying YOUR laptop as well. That would show them.
