> I am not an american but I have the impression that all mr. Bush has done is take "freedom" away from america
Nonsense! America is the land of the free! Why, here in the U.S. we are free to say anything we want about the government, complain all we want. Hell, we can even burn our flag. It may not be "nice", but it's not against the law!
> I've always been a little uncomfortable with the underlying assumptions white=good, black=bad. I prefer to describe such lists as "blocklists" and "accept lists"
That's ridiculous. You are putting racial overtones into something that has NONE. They aren't "African-American-Lists" and "Caucasian-Lists". They are black and white, as in NIGHT and DAYLIGHT. Since we've been huddled in caves a pitch black night has been dangerous. Predators hunt by night. Criminals work by dark.
This is as silly as the feminist movement protesting the word "Chairman" and having it changed to "Chairperson". The origin of the "man" in "chairman" is the word "manipulate", "mano" (hand), etc. NOT male.
> I have 80gigs to backup. I currently use a friends machine, but it would be nice to pay about $20/month and not have to maintain it mayself.
Get another 80 Gig hard drive. They go for about $0.40/Gig with rebates (see www.bensbargains.net). Put it inside your machine or in an external USB enclosure.
Get Norton Ghost, or if you don't want to pay for Norton Ghost, make a Knoppix CD for free and use 'ntfsclone'.
Make exact images of your hard drive once a week. It may not be "online" but it couldn't get much easier.
Cost: Drive: approx. $32 External USB enclosure: approx. $30 Knoppix: free Total: $62. Time to make a ghost/ntfsclone backup: 30 seconds to click GO, then go do something else for an hour.
So for about $5/month you have a simple easy to do backup system.
> The legislation requires the attorney general to create an official list of Web sites with material that is deemed harmful
Yeah, this will work about as well as making an list of spammers would work.
By the way, ahem... where would one go about getting a copy of this list?:-) If this list becomes very popular does that mean the Utah Attorney General is in the porn business? Where would one find the job openings to become one of the Utah Attorney General's "porn reviewers"?
Here is the photo that Reuters released for this news story. It shows the worlds biggest hacker successfully getting into the Pentagon's secret UFO research labs.
> I own land (my house is built on it), but I'm not aware of any tax that I have to pay because of it.
You should have specified what country you live in. A large portion of Slashdot readers are in the United States, where you pay property tax every year for any property you own.
> Though Nintendo hasn't done very well compared to the PS2
The whole point of TFA is that Nintendo HAS done well, better than SONY and Microsoft combined when your measurement is profit. Nintendo has made ONE BILLION dollars in profit in the past year, Sony has made 400 MILLION dollars in profit, and Microsoft has LOST 550 MILLION dollars.
If you measure by market share or third party support or sales volume or even income then Nintendo doesn't win, but if you measure who is making (and keeping) the most money, Nintendo wins hands down.
> proof that the feds don't understand the internet
No, it's proof that the feds don't CARE what the technical limitations are. If you want to offer dialtone, you have to support 911 emergency calls. If a given technology can't support 911 calls then they don't want it being used for telephone service.
People have died because of this. They don't really care why it's difficult to fix.
Somehow I think the technical difficulties will be solved. Even if it means a database of IP address to geographic location mappings.
Well, they have to put enough Microsoft owned junk on it to make sure another vendor can't sell thin clients into this. For example, there is a Linux RDP client. Microsoft doesn't want to open the door to using Linux for clients. I'm sure they will put enough crap in this client to make sure our computing experience is "safe" from the dangers of third party vendors.
Because this is going to be a PC that only runs IE and a Terminal Services client (RDP) into a big server. You practically don't need ANY OS if it's restricted to JUST IE and Terminal Services Client.

For all of you posting about how he shouldn't take that attitude from his wife...
Consider that maybe, just maybe, she is right.
My wife has been after me for 12 years and three homes to throw out some old boxes of "important stuff." I put my foot down and refused to do it.
12 years later I finally got around to opening those dusty museums of a ME I'd rather forget!
Bell bottoms? Check. Sleevless velour "muscle shirt", size extra-small? Check. 300+ floppy disks of Apple II games that I swapped for at fairs, but never actually played. Not once. Check. Mouldy hammock. Check. 100+ pounds of wires, integrated circuits, resistors and capacitors scavenged from an ancient mainframe being throw out by my university that I was sure to use someday for some project. Check. One precious copy of Playboy with the one and only Nancy Drew, Pamela Sue Martin? Check.
I wrote a song about love and freedom. I tried contacting some labels, but they all hung up on me when I starting singing into the phone. I tried giving it away to some local bands just so I could get some name recognition, but no one would take it. When I sing it in the shower my little brother dumps ice water on me.
I know!!!
1) Try to sell song to Microsoft 2) Publicize their (evil) refusal 3) Post song on my Geocities website 4) Profit!!

Congress want to made burning the flag ILLEGAL?
Oh...
Never mind...

Interestingly, many CS students have no alternative but to "play the organ"...
It's not tech, but I bet a lot of geek minds that are attracted to programming languages are also attracted to the languages of music.
Also designing and building musical instruments would be pretty geeky even in the 16th century.

It was either get a job at a University or play lead guitar in a band. Now I guess I'll have to learn how to play the guitar. A little.

Everything else comes off the big server.
> 2) what every phys. ed. says with respect to the word assume.
Actually I think the origin of this saying was an episode of 'The Odd Couple' back in the 70's.
Felix Unger (Tony Randall) was "defending" Oscar Madison (Jack Klugman) and part of his defense was making Oscar look like an ass.
When Oscar said 'I assumed', Felix wrote ASSUME on a chalkboard and circled 'ASS', 'U', 'ME' while explaining the now-familiar joke.
A comedy club could hire you as a "cooler" in case a table got too funny.
