My wife hasn't moved in a few days either. Being a careful watcher, I am starting to wonder why.
There is no silver bullet. To make a non-trivial web application you will need to write in the following languages/technologies:
SQL for the database. A server-side application language like PHP, Coldfusion, Java/JSP, Ruby, etc. HTML for the client-side layout. Javascript for the client-side application program.
AJAX just refers to a Javascript programming technique.

I got this sane idea to STOP being a web developer... you know, what with having to pay rent and buy food and stuff...
> Why was technological innovation so slow for so long? > Why did technoloical innovation increase in pace?
Because each technological improvement acts as leverage to make the next technological innovation come faster. If you graphed this process you will get an exponential curve. Google for "singularity" for an interesting extrapolation of this.
HAHAH! What a dope! I chastized the original for getting the reference wrong, then got the actor wrong. I must have been thinking of 'The Blob', yeah, that's it...
Take Two based startup, Take Three, has just announced that they will be offering innovative enhancements to the community of Take Two users, who are themselves a small subset of the community of Firefox users, who are themselves a small subset of the community of Mozilla based browser users. You know what would be REALLY funny?
Post the same article every hour until midnight. That would really make me laugh. I'd probably spit soda all over my keyboard from laughing so hard. It would be really clever and amusing. I'd be sure to check back here every hour to make sure I didn't miss one, and miss out on the hilarity.

Can we just list all of ThinkGeek's fun April Fools products in ONE article instead of a separate article for each one?
Or is today dedicated to ThinkGeek? Perhaps there should be a new category just for ThinkGeek April Fools products... Or give them their own URL: ThinkGeek.Slashdot.Org
Oh, by the way, just to ruin your fun: 'Fake Ghostlike Photons' = 'Fools Shop Think Geek'.
The artist formerly known as , formerly known as Prince, has changed his name to the 64,060 symbol long name of a protein referred to as 'Methionylalanylthreonyl...leucine'.
His upcoming album will have a 10 page foldout with his name printed on it.
The DA has just found out that the suspect had recently gotten bagels at a so-called 'Bagel Store' where he witnessed slashing and sawing motions with a sharp knife perpetrated on a bagel as symbolic proxy for a murder victim.
"Bagels may be involved," quoted the DA as he himself chewed on a bagel, unaware of the sinister implications of his actions.
I don't LIKE the broadcast flag because it takes away my ability to make personal copies of TV shows, and potentially takes away my ability to time-shift with my TIVO. But if the content owners want to use the broadcast flag it is their right. I only watch shows at my convenience on TIVO, so I will never watch anything that doesn't allow time-shifting. But I doubt I represent the majority of sheeple, so they probably aren't bothered by the loss of viewership.
No, I do NOT accept that at some date in the future my data may become unavailable to me.
That is why I will not use Outlook for my email. Because all of the email is locked in a large proprietary binary file. I use a mail program where, in the worst case, I could write Perl scripts to pull out my mail and put it in another format.
When I upgrade to a new computer I am careful to bring all of my data with me in formats I can still use. This takes time and effort and I do it because my data is important to me.
If I am purchasing music, paying per song or album, then it is MY music. I don't accept that at some date in the future my music will no longer be playable because some company went out of business or no longer supports my hardware/operating system, or because I moved all my files over to a new computer and can't get the DRM to work.
If I am renting music, for example paying $20/month for all I can listen to, then I can accept pretty much any DRM because I don't expect the music to be "mine". If something goes wrong with my DRM I would just switch to a different service and for $20/month have unlimited listening rights again.
Note that, for me, it's not worth $20/month to listen to music on my computer. I already have plenty of music I own on my computer, and there are free alternatives for radio-style listening. But I get that it's a worthwhile proposition for some people.
All of this stress going through your head will dissapear about 15 minutes after your final day on this job ends. You know why? Because you DON'T WORK THERE ANYMORE and don't have to do anything they ask anymore.
He can't even make you stay longer than 2 weeks, unless you signed something to the contrary when you joined.
If you are interested in keeping him as a consulting client after you leave (although your message sounds like you'd rather NOT), then negotiate with him. Tell him you want to give two weeks notice, but will meet him in the middle and give him 4 in consideration of the fact that you will be doing consulting for him.
Remember, after you walk out that door, your energy, commitment, enthusiasm, and mind will be on your NEW JOB, not this old one.
I had a terrible job once (paid well though) that had me on beeper duty all times of day and night and weekends. I could have been an obstetrician if I had wanted that. On my final day there after my two weeks was up, my boss became irate with me because I wouldn't stay late my last Friday night there. I explained I was sorry that he had to stay late, but I didn't work there anymore. I wasn't being paid to be there. And then I left at 5pm for the first time in 2 years.
These entrenched companies, led by Microsoft, have a particular blind spot when it comes to recognizing the damage they are doing to their own reputations and public image by continually and obviously lying to the public.
Microsoft has already damaged their reputation to the point that MOST IT professionals understand that anything MS says to them is most likely a lie. They may buy MS products for other compelling reasons, but always with the understanding that MS is a sneaky company.
Aren't they apprehensive, even a little, of having NO goodwill among their customers? If the technology competitive landscape changes (eg: the power of the monopoly weakens) their customers will be eager to jump ship.
PHP5 sounds really great. I'd like to use it, really I would. But I am so spoiled by ColdFusion, especially the excellent database support. I was *shocked* when I found out PHP projects are coded for a specific database. In Coldfusion I can change database vendors merely by making a change on an admin page. All the Coldfusion code remains the same. Of course of you have to avoid non-standard SQL inside your queries.
Is PHP database support anywhere near Coldfusion's? Not trolling, just would like to know.

Your wife is due? Is the a pre-arranged marriage or something? Arranged WAY in advance!
Oh, you mean your baby is due...
never mind...

In the real world this is blatently untrue.
Look around you.
The CEO has 2.5 kids.
My landscaper has 8 kids.
The poor unwashed masses still have lots of kids. The affluent don't. Now who's genetic seed is going to spread the most?

That is incorrect.
All of the examples you gave had no problem copying the data out to a newer media or format.
In the case of orphaned DRM you do NOT have the option to copy out to a newer format.
