no joke or sarcasm meant, but there are not any enemies out there like that for America anymore...
and if that war that sent home 3 out of four soldiers dead or missing limbs was for a good reason (such as ousting an insane criminal from running a whole country) America would probably gladly do it...at least this American would...
but then, I just can't get enough blood (:
And America took place in that particular military action in 1914...something a lot of countries overseas for some reason seem to have forgotten. Just because it wasn't on our soil doesn't mean we didn't die to help out the cause.
Mod me down tho, because I actually do believe this potential war in Iraq is for humanitarian reasons, not for oil...remember, if it was for oil, we would of taken it in 1991. (:
This to me is an interesting point...I've often wondered why there aren't other desktop "shells" out there for windows, being that at this point, everyone (on/. (: ) knows that you can change your shell from explorer.exe to other programs...but using calc.exe or progman.exe for your shell is not very useful (: The only thing I can think of is/was LiteStep, and as far as I can recall, that was more of a hacked "explorer.exe" than a complete seperate desktop program.
Admittedly, I haven't checked for new desktop shell's for Windows, are there any out there that replace explorer? Or is explorer too embedded at this point for a different shell to be feasible?
Would being able to choose between several desktop programs be something useful in Windows anyway? (: I think it would, at the very least, be a neat thing to see, whether I use it or not...
For something new, such as XP, you get unlimited support for setup calls, then after it is installed and working, you are allowed 2 free support issues before you have to pay. And if its to report a bug, then the call is free.
Server products OTOH usually have some pretty high fee's, probably due to the poor reasoning that only companies that make tons of cash are using the product...however there are contracts you can purchase that allow you a certain number of calls (in which 1 "call" = as many calls as it takes to get 1 certain issue resolved) which brings the cost of server support down quite a bit. But once again, if you call in to report a bug, you don't have to pay for the call.
I've worked support for many different companies, including MS (who outsources at least 90% of their support...providing tech support is a black hole as far as making money is concerned), and I've only once found the cause of the problem to be an actual "bug" (having to have a certain version of the JavaVM installed to install IE5). As soon as we (me) figured out the issue, a support article was written, submitted to the Knowledge Base, and was available to the rest of the techs and people who use the web within a matter of days.
Plus at this point, if you don't want to make a phone call, you can always submit a bug report thru the Help function...they usually get answered in a matter of hours...
There are options. MS might not be the most friendly corporate entity out there, but they do try to get things to work out ok (:
Actually the line was "Let's hunt some orcs" which is what they do in the book. Perfectly OK for a Ranger to do (:
I've seen the movie twice now, and I think one of the best parts for me was, after the second time, the 10-year old kid behind us said to his Grandmother, "Grandma, can you buy me the books? I don't want to wait a year to find out what happened."
After reading quite a few comments, I haven't really seen anyone mention that to keep the movie 100% true to the book would of meant a 10 hour long movie...One sweeping panning shot = 10 pages of description of the Fellowship walking. A picture is worth a 1000 words, remember? (:
I recently picked up an Audigy (for only 55bucks from PriceWatch btw) for my new machine. It seems like the main new thing is the AdvancedEAX support, which, when you run thru the GoldMine demo that comes with the card, is actually pretty neat. Now all we need are some games that support AdvancedEAX to go along with the card (:
As an aside, it installed fine for me under XP, for those who says its an issue. The thing is you have to go and get a driver update for XP from Creative after you load the drivers from the CD that ships with the card. My one complaint is after buying Aureals assets, they didn't put A3D2 support on the card:/ Good way to make EAX the standard (;
but NT/2k/XP aren't "rewrites" (Joel defines a rewrite as starting from scratch). They are built upon pre-existing code. Did you read what you cut and pasted? (:
Altho MS is supposedly working on a new OS that is a complete rewrite (BlackComb? Not sure of the codename). We'll (or at least I) will see how that goes...
great feature...my fonts don't look jaggy...bfd, folks, i'd rather have programs that run on my os, then non-jaggy fonts! an os without software is just plain useless...
"linux! sure, you can't run anything useful and/or fun, but hey, no jaggies! you don't need any special hardware, because hey, we don't do anything special!"
fanatics...quit bothering the real world. get a job. spend some time porting over useful software, not introducing old technology and preaching about it like it's something important.
hehe, but who does that? (: I use apps and services on my machines...thats 99% of the fun (; Your mileage may vary (:
The key point is as numerous people have mentioned before, as long as the Admin does what he/she is paid to do, a lot of these issues wouldn't occur. As far as home user's being the cause of worm propagation, well, thats what ME was for...Windows for Dummies (:
probably not (: I used (key word is "used") to work for a third-party tech support company that handled a lot of MS's tech support (they don't take more than 10% of their tech calls), and one thing we found funny was that sometimes the license wasn't correct. I can't remember the actual culprits here, but I believe they used the Win98 Plus Pack license for Win98SE...basically they attached the wrong license to the wrong product. If they don't even have the right license, how can they expect it to be binding? And in my history of taking tons of calls, not one customer ever read the agreement...they would joke about just clicking "agree" and moving on. I'm sure most of/.'s users do the same, if they use Windows at all (: I'm curious how this will end up...will not understanding the agreement mean you don't have to live by it (ignorance of the law?) or does it matter, because since you clicked "Agree" you "Agreed"? (:
grrr...have to change my settings...don't email me, that address doesn't work (:

Chicks will think I'm cool if I have the latest tunes? Damn, and I thought it was all about the car I drive and clothes I wear...
Loading Kazaa now, I can't wait until I'm cool!
heh (: AC's make my day (;
This is great! Now I can get my smoking accessories and modchips from one central .gov site!
right...?

No no, that was Al Gore (:
but the ~ key is easy, its the console key :/
no, it really is rediculous...it means to be diculous, again.
ah, Wedge Antilles...the Max Sterling of Star Wars.

yeah, clicking Start and clicking Windows Update and checking the boxes and hitting download is soooo hard. Maybe I'm just extraordinarily competent.
:/
And since my 2k box takes about 1/5 the time to reboot than my RedHat box takes, I don't find that a real issue either
