I understand that microsoft wants to serve their user even in android mobile but their software is only perfect when it is applied in their own os and not in other OS.
The OS is irrelevant. Windows, OSX, whatever, it doesn't matter. The problem is trying to put an application like Office on a phone. Sorry, but that's just stupid.
Considering the source (Gizmodo) it's not surprising that they think Vista's "frosted glass" effect was its main innovation. Vista had its problems, but many of them were the fault of third party developers who dragged their feet when it came to making their software run properly on Vista. Having used Vista every day for 18 months, it was better than XP. Not as good as Windows 7, but not as bad as most people tried to claim.
And it doubles down the devilry with: “Load images automatically”... removed from preferences and reset to defaults
So they re-enable javascript and image loading on people who actively disabled them. Removing the option from preferences isn't evil but silently re-enabling them is criminal. >
What the fuck is wrong with these people? If I wanted a browser with a shitty UI and almost no configurability I would use Internet Explorer
The browser.tabs.autoHide functionality has been stripped. I've read all the history on this. I'm fucking livid..
I don't care about that feature since I never hide the tab bar, however, reading through the comments the arrogance of the Mozilla developers is truly mind-boggling, with most justifications for doing this amounting to little more than a thinly veiled "Fuck You".
Exactly what was dumbed down here? If you're referring to the JS preference, its simply been moved into about:config to prevent Joe User from "Turning off the Java" and breaking the internet.
Except that it only "breaks the Internet" on his computer. Which is his problem. Not mine.
This is just another one of Mozilla's eleventy gazillion stupid pointless moves.
The rise and fall of lead levels from gasoline and lead-based paint are strongly correlated to the rise and fall of crime rates in communities around the world.
LOL. I can't believe they trotted out that piece of shit again.
Yes it is stupid. I understand that spam is a problem, but if you run a website, it's *YOUR* problem. CAPTCHAs make it *MY* problem and that's just stupid.
if you look at the introductory video on the mars one website, it seems the intention is to fund the project through 'media'. The mars colony will essentially become an unending series of big brother
Yes. We will get to watch them die in real time. Either crash landing on Mars or going insane and killing each other or committing suicide before they get there.. A one way trip to Mars seems fun and exciting until you get 75% of the way there and the reality sinks in that you're going to die very soon.**
**Due to the fact that we still don't know how to safely land a vehicle full of people on Mars.
And probably concluded that either they didn't infringe, or that they could steamroll anyone else.
Or, they only did the search in the US and just assumed they'd be fine.
This seems to be a recurring problem with Microsoft. They got into trademark trouble over the name Metro Now trademark trouble over the name SkyDrive. There are many other examples where they are very unfocused.
we currently have processes in place to prevent duplicate reservations and combat reservation fraud.
While they may indeed have a system in place to prevent duplicate reservations, their answer is meaningless. If a person can make a reservation on-line then a bot can do the same, except faster and in the middle of the night while you're sleeping.
With the latest quad-core devices having enough power to run Touch-Wiz seamlessly (from what I've seen in-store, anyway) they are very nice out-of-box, even without root.
but all of that kind of seems piddling compared to the effect his actions will have on billions of the world's poorest people. I have been forced to grudgingly admire him for quite some time now over his philanthropy and the transparency and effectiveness of his charity compared to some of its "rivals."
Well then you haven't been paying attention.
The Gates Foundation has an endowment of $30 Billion making it the largest philanthropic organization in the world. But one third of that money is invested in companies whose practices run counter to the foundation’s supposed charitable goals and social mission. For example, in Africa, The Foundation has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in oil companies including Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon Mobil Corp, and Chevron. These firms have been responsible for much of the pollution causing respiratory problems and other afflictions among the local population.
The Gates Foundation also has investments in 69 of the worst polluting companies in the US and Canada, including Dow Chemical. It holds investments in pharmaceutical companies whose drugs cost far beyond what most patients around the world can afford and The Foundation often lobbies on behalf of those companies for "Intellectual Property" protections that make obtaining low cost medicines more difficult.
Other companies in the Foundation’s portfolio have been accused of transgressions including forcing thousands of people to lose their homes, supporting child labor and defrauding and neglecting patients in need of medical care.
In the mean time, Bill Gates' net worth has increased by $20 Billion since 2007.
If if what you say is true, and I'm not sure it is, you have completely missed the point. Eolas was awarded bogus patents. They did not "invent" anything that should have be patentable.
Google (or somebody like them) would be more likely to come if it weren't so hard to.
Completely wrong. Even if all the regulations were changed, even if they were completely eliminated, we would still be in the same situation we are today. The person who wrote that article demonstrates that they have no understanding of the issue when they say:
Deploying broadband infrastructure isn’t as simple as merely laying wires underground: that’s the easy part.
Running wire to every home in the country is difficult, expensive (even without all the regulations) and very time consuming. That's why Verizon abandoned their rollout of fiber and why Google will do the same after they connect a couple of cities.
Running all new wiring is a waste of time and money when we already have the infrastructure in place to give people decent speed. If I wanted, I could get 50Mbps from my local cable company. It's not fiber speed but its fast enough for me - and most everyone else. But it's ridiculously expensive, and, it's rendered worthless by monthly bandwidth caps. We know what the problem is -- lack of competition. But having a dozen different companies all running their own wires all over the place is neither practical nor desirable.
We've already wired the entire country. Twice. Running more wires is not the answer. Until we break the broadband monopoly and force the existing companies to open up their networks this problem will remain and everyone reading Slashdot today will be dead and gone long before Google or anyone else wires the entire country with fiber.
Yes, almost all the movies these days suck. But failures?
So far this year, 7 movies have grossed more than $200 Million. Another 9 have grossed more than $100 Million. Most of the movies listed as having "cratered at the box office" have made $60 - 80 Million and some of them were just released this month. RIPD has only made $12 Million but it was only released 3 days ago.
And that's just box office in the U.S. Add in the rest of the world, DVD, etc. and they are making a metric shit-ton of money. Where exactly is the failure here?
Anyone who has had to suffer through that abomination that is called Lotus Notes would probably be quite willing to gather a mob, light the torches, arm themselves with pitchforks, and chase the poor sod who created this travesty to the closest windmill and set it alight.
Frustrated from being forced to use Notes for 3 years... definitely.
3 years? HA!!! I've been using Lotus Notes since 1999. Hopefully I never meet Ray Ozzie because I don't know if I would be able to restrain myself from doing something terrible.
Overall, however, this recent appointment is meaningless. HP is adding 3 additional members to their board of directors, i.e., 3 more people getting paid $200k a year to attend a couple of meetings and do nothing.
The former CEO of McDonald's The former CEO of Liberty Media (distributor of TV programming such as QVC and the Disney Channel) And the creator of one of the shittiest pieces of software ever.
That should really be a tremendous help for a company whose main products are PCs, Servers and Printers.
While I wish him every success at his new post, question is, how many secrets will he take along with him to HP?
I think it is appropriate that the creator of one of the most fucked up pieces of software (Lotus Notes) will be working for one of the most fucked up companies.
I think the move to PC (as far as it actually happened) was due to the current consoles being a bit outdated, they are far behind a high end PC in performance. The new console generation might be able to win some of the hard-core gamers back.
But I think you are right about the casuals.
The Xbox One uses an x86 CPU. In other words, it *IS* a PC. So why not just play games on a PC and not bother with the Xbox One?
... all the intelligent and insightful commentary from the Slashdot peanut gallery about how rubbish Java is.
The other day, i was looking through my browser history and noticed a link to the download of Java 7 u11 from January of this year. The current version is u21. That 10 updates in 6 months. No software is perfect, but when you have to issue 10 updates in 6 months, that's pretty bad.
I understand that microsoft wants to serve their user even in android mobile but their software is only perfect when it is applied in their own os and not in other OS.

Chances are you can still modify those options through the about:config page
Maybe . . . . for now. Until they completely remove it, even from about:config, like they did with the "always show tab bar" pref.
What a bunch of fucking retards.
And it doubles down the devilry with: “Load images automatically” ... removed from preferences and reset to defaults

I hope they reverse this decision.
LOL!!!!! You must be new to Firefox.
The stupid, arrogant, pointless decisions they make are NEVER reversed.

Personally I think over regulation is the problem. Wired agrees:

ICANN is busy considering over 1800 requests for new gTLDs like .shop, .motocycle, .google, .youtube, and .lol.
All of which are completely useless and will only be used for phishing/scams/spams/malwares.
Its hard enough getting 3 developers working together to produce quality software, let alone 3 THOUSAND. How exactly do they plan to manage this?
WTF do they need 3000 developers for? I would think 1/10th that number would be more than enough.
