That's true. There's certainly nothing preventing them from getting into it. Last few tech gigs I've had, any female resume was immediately fast-tracked right to HR for follow up interviews. The fear was that the chicks would sue.
I don't believe that there's a damn thing holding back women in the US workforce anymore, and little reason to feel like we need to entice them into a career that they probably don't want. If a woman wants an IT career, it's very easy for her to get one. Anyone that says otherwise has never applied at places I've worked. *shrug*
(just a little over a year ago) At a fairly new data center, Hotmail's backend still had a LOT of Sun Enterprise 4500 boxes running Solaris. None of them were being phased out at all. But, all of the boxes that were being brought online were HP/Compaq boxes running Windows.
"When Apple finally came out with a sub $1000 computer, it is so feature lacking and crippled that few PC users were ever convinced that the Mac Mini is a good alternative to a $600 PC"
That's the stupidest fucking comment I've read in years. For the record (and I don't know why I'm even wasting my time replying to such bullshit) the Mac mini wasn't the first sub-$1000 computer. Goes to show what you know.
Maybe among the incestuous circle jerk blogosphere crowd, then yeah. But practically any idiot can throw up a blog these days. Doesn't make them anything special. I generally consider blogs to be worthless internet clutter.
I've run into that situation before. They decided to say "Ok, you can go now." and I *didn't* get paid for the remaining two weeks that I had expected to get paid for.
The fun of working in an 'at-will' state.
Generally they think you'll get 'short timers syndrome' and not do anything anyway. It's no wonder people just up & quit these days. The acts of courtesy that an employee extends to a company are very rarely returned.
Great idea, but pretty much any spammer with a valid phone number just lets it run into a voicemail box. And thanks to VoIP technologies (which many spammers do use) the old "Let's fill up their voicemail box" gig won't really work.:-(
I totally agree with you. Problem is, watch the lawyers file the class action lawsuit. Lawyers will make millions, and users will get nothing more than a $5 coupon for their next Sony BMG purchase. It's royally sucks, but sadly, it seems to be the reality.
That's nice. IIRC, these assholes aren't supposed to be digging holes on the playa, much less burning a fucking ENGINE BLOCK right on the playa.
Their "leave no trace" ethic is nothing more than bullshit marketing at best. There's *plenty* of traces of the event left over. The BLM's inspection covers less than 1% of the event site. People have reported finding nails, rebar, tools, etc *months* after the event.
Actually, he's pretty much right on. The organization lies to the media & lies to attendees. It's nothing more than a huge cash cow for Larry Harvey & his pack of wannabe progressive idiots. "free society" my ass. There are more rules & regulations at Burning Man than you can shake a stick at.
Probably because a lot of the people that go have no recollection of the entire event. Drugs do that to a person. The only thing they're capable of coming up with is "Dude, it's Burning Man!"
I found that my local BBS was the BEST way to meet intelligent women. Back in those days, you had to have some clue to buy a modem, plug it in, get everything working, AND find the damn BBS in the first place.
Local BBS = straight up meat market. Aw yeah. i miss those days..
If the kids want a laptop, they can buy it themselves after they've earned the necessary funds.
what happened to teaching the value of hard work? Kids these days expect laptops, cars, iPods, PlayStations and $50 games. Forget that. Want toys? Do some work around the house and earn it. I'll even pay you $10/hr to help in the yard, wash the car, wash the dog, clean the bathrooms, and other various things that need to be done around the house.
Oh, and it also depends on how good the grades are. Kids don't *need* laptops to learn. There are still plenty of books left in the local libraries.
Sorry, I'm just sick of seeing how technology in schools is wasted. I'm sick of seeing money being spent on tech toys for schools just because it's there.
I should be suing the crap out of Nokia & Samsung as well. My cell phone batteries don't last very long. It's outrageous! I don't get anywhere near the talk time that I'm supposed to. How dare they! Why don't they resolve the issue to my satisfaction!
On the other hand, my iPod is 2 years old and I have no battery life problems at all. I very easily get 10 hours of battery life out of it. I listened to my iPod during a trip from SFO -> PHX -> JFK and the battery was just fine. I have several iPod owning friends. None of them have noticed an battery issues.
I'm sorry, but the people that are bitching about the iPod's battery are simply stupid idiots that can't think of anything productive to do with their time. What an overblown "issue."
"Astroturfing" certainly isn't something new, and neither is the practice of manipulating articles. Advertising slime certainly *would* stoop to that level to promote a product.
Heck, even movie reviews are total garbage. Sony just got busted for publishing "reviews" penned by someone that didn't even exist.
I don't trust *any* online review, be it on newegg, epinions.com, or amazon. Best reviews are still the ones you get from friends.
Levitra? Uh, no, I don't need to buy any, my sex life is fine, thanks..
oh.. *Levanta* is what you're trying to sell me. Ah, I see. A different kind of pill. "The kind of purchase that gets rid of headaches," you say? I'll take 2!
The LinuxCare/Levanta folks are going to be at the next Linuxworld Expo. Is Slashdot going to be there? I've been going since 1999 and the event really has dwindled in size. No more huge Slashdot booth, either. I was going to go anyway, but this product looks pretty interesting and I'll definitely stop by the booth and check it out.
"Do they seriously think this will decrease piracy in the 3rd world? All they've really done is cripple their product. They now have several issues to deal with."
Slashdot is an "advertising portal" site these days. Linking to 2 year old articles with tons of banner ads all over them instead of the readily available printer friendly versions is becoming commonplace.
Just in case and of you dumb fuck "Macs suck" knuckle draggers are wondering, It's over. U of Wi pulled the plug.
38 hours and not one successful crack.
Mr "Mac OS X is so insecure" didn't even manage to get in.

hah. my boss would be the first one to call in sick, and the rest of us barely show up to work as it is.
Chances are, we'd never even notice little things like bird flu.. armageddon.. Hurricanes..

No wonder I quit wasting my time around here.

Many lyrics sites exist outside of the US, well outside of their reach. What did they hope to accomplish by attacking a shareware author?
Oh, nothing. Basically, they're just dicks. But, we knew that already.
I've run into that situation before. They decided to say "Ok, you can go now." and I *didn't* get paid for the remaining two weeks that I had expected to get paid for.

Just a few paragraphs into the Wired article, and we get to read about how the lawsuits started flying.
The answer to spyware: eradicate all of the lawyers *first* and THEN call in the air strike on Spyware HQ.
Great idea, but pretty much any spammer with a valid phone number just lets it run into a voicemail box. :-(
And thanks to VoIP technologies (which many spammers do use) the old "Let's fill up their voicemail box" gig won't really work.
but, this is Slashdot. Whenever Google does *anything* we're supposed to give them a big e-handjob. Didn't you get that memo? ;)

It's only a "global economy" when they're laying you off and sending your job to India. :(

what about streaming it, then? You're not giving away the mp3s files, just streaming them over the internet.
:(
Too bad the RIAA/ASCAP got their filthy paws in that one too and screwed everything up.
Sucks. There used to be a lot more internet radio stations, too.

I don't think China is a third world country. But you're right, it won't reduce piracy because free is still better than $230.

Only 3 good "In Soviet Russia.." jokes in the whole thread?!
:P
I thought there would be at least 20 by now. Man, you guys are disappointing.
