Seriously, while Youtube has some worthwile content (tutorials, etc) its not of sufficient quality that I'd actually plunk down money to watch. Hell if i see one more chick shaking her ass to some song...im going to retch (after the video is over of course).
In a move that, in hindsight, was eriely prohpetic i set up a uucp mail server. I was teaching myself C when a coworker gave me a copy of this disk based unix tutorial. I thought it was neat and then began hunting around for a full version of the os. Mind you, this was 1992 or so. I even remember sending 3 boxes of 3.5" floppies to someone somewhere who copied a version of slackware for me and sent them back. Loved the OS ever since.
Ok, lets see, this server with i already pay 100+ dollars for, to watch maybe a dozen out of a couple hundred channels, wants to charge me even more for having an internet life? Isn't it bad enough that i have to pay for channels i'll never use like the spanish speaking channels, or that i have to buy blocks of the same network that shows the same thing on each channel? And lets see, i spend most of the day either asleep or at work. Something isn't adding up. Damned thieves...
Hmmm...what say you and I find this guy and work him over in an alley. I'll beat him with my slide rule. You shove your pocket protector in his mouth to keep him quiet.
No really, im a father of 3 and working in the tech sector about as long. Amazing what some people are paid to come up with isnt it.
I have to agree with you on this. With the cancellation of so much that was truly good, we are left with the occasional gem in a trough of crap. All the snake movies, and gator movie and spider movies, and knock offs of other movies... I remember when i used to enjoy watching SF. Now its my starting point to surf up FX or USA, or down to History or some such.
SciFi has historically been treated as the province of fringe viewers. Networks would rather do something popular like, GAG, another "Law and Order"/"CSI" spin off or clone such as "Lie To Me".
Not saying these shows are bad, just that SF has often been given short shrift.
Try not to think of them as sloths unable to come after you for a sustained period. Think of them more as...um...er...trapdoor spiders...waiting for you to get close enough:)
Wait, they didnt bite you did they? [edging towards the door]
Hmmm...for my two cents. I enjoyed the movie. I grew up watching the monster movies of the day and i was able tosuspend disbelief and enjoy the movie for what it was. I left the movie wanting more. Wanting to know more about the monster, where it came from etc.
I was actually surprised that the rating on rotten tomatoes as i dont always see eye to eye with the ratings there.
China probably will beat us to the moon and then some. The politicians wont care because it costs too much money. But let the Chinese find a way to start making money off of lunar trips, etc i bet you'll see a change in attitude though it may be too bad.
No they aren't less intelligent, but they lack ALOT of common sense. I'm a 30 something thats kicking 40 in the ass and i and a number of friends have noticed that kids today are lacking something fundamental in the way of common sense. They are intelligent, but dont know how to apply it.
The company that i work for also has similar email policies. That is to say, they have none. we have one office with about 400+ users spread over two exchange server 5 mail databases on each server. Total size of DBs....350+ Gigs... And there are no plans in sight to try to alleviate the load.
Im the exchange admin for a law firm. Somewhat large one. We are a windows shop completely. Only products that might have unix or linux in them, would be devices where its imbedded, and the personal "play" boxes that some of us have set up for our own *nix learning pleasure.
While i'm more of an OS hobbyist than a full blown advocate, i found it interesting when, in discusing the fate of a custom made unix solution, the fact that the data was stored in mysql drew snickers. Even those supposedly in the know, often times regard OS as a joke. I envy those of you who have the opportunity to work with OS in a professional capacity.
Where i am, we'd rather throw money at problems (read as M$) than innovate. However i can also see the point in having a homogenous IT infrastructure.
Interesting, how insightful of Mr Gates. How borderline racist.
He says that they people of Africa wouldn't have the expertise to use the computers and software? That sounds alot like the old standby "you dont have enough experience" often heard when applying for a job. How is one supposed to gain the expertise with software and computers if they dont have them.
ITs a shame to see one of the biggest success stories of modern times act like such an ass.
Hmmm i'm going to have to read this. See what happens to all the politicians...are they going to just give up politics and power mongering and become enlightened do-gooders?
I'm also going to have to read to see how much that extended lifespan is going to cost me. It wont be free or cheap...unless the Open Source movement can get a version out.
Find someone to come in and tell you,
"Ah, we can fix this. We'll just replace it with an MS AD server. Oh wait, you want to keep this? Why ever for?"
Those are a dime a dozen. Well ok, considerably more than a dime. But they make themselves sound soooo wonderful...
...not a damned thing.

Just my 2cents.
Oh, i say prophetic because i've spent the last 8 years or so as an email administrator. Though unfortunately its Microsoft Exchange....

your point is taken but i think NASA would've been better served by going with the popular vote.
...democracy is thrown out when it suits. Its not like Colbert was an offensive name. I'd be insulted were i Colbert.

Interesting...look at the site now...
Did Frank bow to preasure, or was the thought of his "baby" moving beyond his control too much?

My apologies to Bill, i see he wasn't the one that said it. My other comments still stand.
