The software, developed around 1993, detected similarities in the students' work in three computer coding assignments, Eislet said. It's unlikely that innocent students' work was detected by the program, he said.
1993? Think it was written in COBOL? Have they tested it for Y2K compliance?
Wasn't there something called "leech zmodem" back in the BBS days? This version of zmodem would abort the download at the very last byte, so as to fool the BBS's upload/download ratio tracking.
That's an interesting idea. After that file has been share a few million times, the download will fly! 100:1 compression eat your heart out.
Perhaps this was Lindows plan all along? Many on/. suggested that it seemed improbable that they had created something better than Wine in a very short time. Maybe they never intended to. They generated a lot of interest (and e-mail addresses) on Slashdot and other Linux forums. They picked a name that would get M$ attention. Now, they show M$ that tens of thousands (my guess) of the ubergeeks are going to leave M$ and sign up with them (by showing M$ the e-mail list). Perhaps this was a plan to get M$ to buy them out for a few million?
I'm not saying that it's likely, but some of the peices fit.
Well, I never got to read the first aritlce because it was slashdotted, and it looks like I won't be able to read this one. Maybe both of these sites should follow their own advice and build some beefier servers.

The Drone War
·
· Score: 3, Funny
After doing a little research I've discovered that there are several research projects in process for robot warfare. See: www.battlebots.com for the full details. It appears that the most efficient stratedgy is to flip the opponent robot onto it's side or back. Most of the drones are unable to recover from this vicious attack.
Many of the robot builders really dislike this proven stratedgy saying that it's too easy and prefer to try bludgen their opponents instead. Those builders generally lose.
I was once able to achive 100:1 compression, here's how I did it. Remember back in the days that 14.4 modems were popular? The boxes would make the claim, (in huge writing) "SPEEDS UP TO 150,000 bytes per second!!!". Somewhere in small print it would mention that those speeds were under optimal conditions using compression (V.32bis? I can't remember now).
Well...having never seen my 14.4 modem move data that quickly I decided to do a test. A friend and I dialed into each other's modem. We created a 300k file consisting of nothing but upper-case "P". Guess what? We got that fabled 150,000 bytes/sec!
It goes to show, you can do amazing things with ramdom data as long as your random data is carefully selected. Don't tell me that an infinite number of monkeys couldn't produce a 300k file of upper-case "P".
I found that one of my Usenet predictions from 95 didn't come true:

I read several more chain mail for profit letters today and then I
realized something..... These chain mail letters might actually be
providing a valuable service on the net. The idiots who believe that
they can actually make $50,000 in 2 weeks by sitting on the couch in
their underwear will send their money in and eventually they will be so
broke that they can't afford their internet connection.
There was a similar article on Slashdot (a long time ago, not a dig at/. editors) which should have some good ideas for you. I only remember it because I was the one who asked the question.
It strikes me that there is a pretty easy test one could give to these machines. They talk about the database of millions of photos (of criminal, hopefully). Why don't they compare each of the photos to the others in the database? If there are many hits it's obvious that there is a big false positive problem....
Or, it might find that some people believed to be different people are actually the same person.
When you go to the article, please notice that there are 5 pages (I didn't think that was obvious).

Now we need a law in Texas that states that it's illegal for Spam subject lines to contain "ADV:". That way, the spammers will get sued either in TX or CA. That would put an end to Spam once and for all.
For more background info on how neurons work: see How stuff works sub-page on the brain. I was hoping that they would have a good discussion on how sodium and potasium ions move through the cell membranes creating a charge, but at least it's a good intro.
Meanwhile, the Canadian National Research Council has sent over some techs who have scanned the whole complex into super-accurate 3-D models as to be sure of rebuilding the temples precisely as they were.
Don't get me wrong, without physical security you have no security. However, I'm sure that all of the physical security impresses the pants off the Customer's Executives who aren't aware that their data is only as secure as the helpdesk.
l33t H4xor: This is Bob Bigswingingdick, could you reset my password for me?
Helpdesk: Sure thing, but I can't give you the password over the phone, I'll have to give it to your boss.
l33t H4xor: Did you not hear me correctly, This is Bob Bigswingingdick, I don't have a manager. By the way, tell me who your manager is.
Helpdesk: That won't be necessary sir, I'll take care of you.
In terms of raw performance, the Celeron 733 (4-way set associative L2) will outperform the PowerPC 750 running at 500MHz in any of the synthetic benchmarks we've seen. We can only assume that a 733MHz CPU with a 133MHz FSB and 8-way set associative L2 cache would only be faster than the Gekko giving the Xbox the CPU performance advantage.
Am I missing something? Why would you care which CPU is faster? As long as the CPU is fast enough to play the game, I don't give a rat's ass if it's a Cray. It's not like I'm folding@home on my Game Cube.
I am really sick of people on/. and elsewhere bashing MS admins for not patching their systems. There is a very good reason why I didn't patch my IIS servers until Code Red came out, and the same reason why I am always slow to roll out MS patches. BTW, I am a MCSE, and a damned good admin.
When I did start rolling out the patch for Code Red I lost two production servers because the patch was incompatible with older Compaq RAID controller drivers. Microsoft eventually made a note of this on the patch download page, but it was too late for me. If I had been able to wait even longer I would have known about it.
So, still to this day, I do not roll out Microsoft patches as soon as they are available. Not because I am not a good admin, but because I have a healty distrust of Microsoft patches. Please stop blaming the MCSE's, we are not all idiots.
