    You can still read and write your Microsoft Office documents.

    You can still play your MP3 files.

    You can still go to all the same websites with your Internet Explorer.

    Those three things alone make it easy for the average user to switch from Windows to Mac.

    Go to the debian web site, learn SOMETHING about it (because its very clear you dont know the first thing about debian) and look at why woody has older versions of software.

    Woody isnt out there trying to be the most current Linux distro, its designed to be and it *IS* the most stable Linux distro because it uses very well tested versions of software.

    Spamcop is about the most useless tool I've seen. You are right, those postmasters wont read the reports and I bet a large percentage of others wont either.

    Simple, dont run Windows. Now I'm certainly not so naive to think that you are 100% safe on Linux/*BSD but you are certainly far more sheltered from the types of virii that affect your average Microsoft OS.

    I can't say much about Opera since I have not personally used it, but MOZILLA is a quite suitable alternative to IE, and free. The newest versions of MOZILLA are at least as stable and work just as well. I have no problems using Mozilla on all the sites which Konqueror chokes on such as my bank and other favorite sites that make heavy use of java and javascript. I dont use IE because I am on Linux.

    Thats great and all but will someone wake me up when I can use cardbus network cards on my laptop with ANY of the bsds, straight out of the box (meaning not having to build my own kernel to support it)

    Its been steadily getting to that point for the last 10 years. It doesnt cost any more for the companies to place LD calls than it does a local call.

    My GF and I live three hours apart but use our 3500 "anytime" minutes to talk to each other long distance. Assuming we only use 1/3 of those minutes in a month, it works out to about 3-3.5c/minute.

    I've had kmail garble up my mail file THREE TIMES now. Mind you, it was just a couple bytes here and a couple bytes there, but in an 65-70MB file, I've got about 50 messages now that I've noticed with Invalid headers (for example the date field had a couple bytes screwed up), attachments (graphics mostly) with a few bits off, making it partly garbled, etc etc. Screw kmail, I'm sticking with Evolution. The rest of KDE is pretty damn sweet though. :)

    I dont know what rock YOU live under, but that is a law in almost EVERY state. I certainly know it is in Illinois, Florida and Georgia. I think Louisiana too. I mention those four because I lived there, but theres many others.


    There is a good reason for it too.

    1) ITS FREE

    2) No one said you had to give them your real name/phone/email/ss#/mothers maiden name/CC#

    3) There's numerous username/pass combos floating around. Someone once said slashdot/slashdot worked there.

    The NYT is a fine, reputable source for an article like this. Better than, say, ZDNet.

    A couple years ago (summer '00) one of the guys in the Chicago-area Linux Users Group did a short demo of Plan9. It looked pretty neat. He didnt know if anyone was actually using this in the real world though, does anyone here? :)

    Ive heard it said many times if you buy an actual T1/T3, you will be taken care of if there is an interruption of service. These are not consumer-grade DSL accounts, these are often businesses and you have an SLA with the baby bell or whomever is providing this to you. If you purchase a T1, lets say, it will be billed and treated as a business account and certainly get better support.

    Unless you had serial connectivity. All my servers are accessable via a serial terminal server so I can get to them even if they fall off the network (and in the case of Suns, even for some hardware and kernel failures)

    Good point. I'd also like to add if a server needs to have its own keyboard and monitor to be worked on at all (and this includes installation) than its a desktop box wasting space in your server room. :)
